All-Time Fantasy Draft

I'll take Ladislao Mazurkiewicz, great Uruguayan keeper of the 60s/70s. They went from conceding 6 goals in the group stages in '62 to 1 goal each in '66 and '70, only to be put out by finalists Germany and Brazil. Best goalkeeper at '70 World Cup.

Would have to have a rummage to find the piece i recall reading something along those lines from him. Can't remember the quote and may have got it wrong, just remember him showering a ridiculous amount of praise in it, so much so, it made me look into Moreno for myself.

I'm sure he would have had words of praise, he was most definitely the best player in River's history, part of a famous attacking quintet during one of their most successful spells (immediately after Independiente's with Erico). Di Stéfano even played with Moreno and was a River fan, so for him to even once (let alone consistently) say Erico was the best is quite something.

Gio will love this one ... Celtic legend, Jimmy Johnstone:

Great pick, had him as one of three I would be happy to get for cover/tactical switches. Ultimately copped out of choosing and got Rivelino first. One down, two to go.

Also, a particular ex-Arsenal centre back was arguably just as good as Rio if not better, yet I know if I'd have picked him he'd attract criticism. The way it goes I guess.

I would have been very happy to pick that other chap TBH. In fact, would be surprised if no one does.

One of the finest goalscoring wingers of his generation, and 7th in the all time Serie A list with an incredible 190 goals in 400 appearances playing for Juventus, Fiorentina, Milan and Napoli. Was a star performer in helping Sweden get to the final of the 1958 World Cup, with his four goals making him one of the players of the tournament, including a brilliant individual effort against West Germany in the semi's. Lightening quick and an exceptional dribbler. Kurt Hamrin

Don't know how this guy hasn't been picked yet.

Carlos Gamarra, the most capped footballer ever for Paraguay, one of the best center backs of all time.

Outstanding for backs-against-the-wall defending. In fact, MJJ could have done with him as that third defender with Chumpitaz free to do what he did best.

I dont think a 3-5-2 or a 5-3-2 would get the best out of my team though, like the current one much better.

Will pick in 5.. sorry thisistheone.. just confused between 2 players!!

No worries, just me and my assistant have picked someone we both loved as a player. *Please do not take him* ;)

I will need to PM someone I think if it's not my turn within a hour or so, will anyone be around?

My favourite goalkeeper ever, loved him to bits, he also went on to coach for Peñarol and about 80% of the caps handed over the last 30 years have gone to his mentees.

One remarkable thing about him was he never spilled, never gave a dangerous rebound. According to him, it was down to him originally being a basketball player and something about the technique in basketball helping him control the bounce better (if he had to kill off the force on the ball he would make it bounce to his side, in front of him, basically anywhere he wanted, ergo, always away from danger).

The circumstances of his debut are also quite peculiar. Maidana had been keeper for years, club legend, two Libertadores, one Intercontinental Cup, NT keeper... but he started making a fuss over his contract. It was a major scandal, all over the papers they talked about this problem Peñarol had with Maidana. Why?

There was a game against Pelé's Santos next to decide who made the Libertadores Final. Over two legs it had ended 7-7 on aggregate, and Peñarol's away goals advantage didn't count back then. Unfortunately for Maidana, Peñarol's manager was the 1950s WC winner Roque Máspoli, who obviously had an eye for a keeper. He had recently signed a young lad for the reserves, as a third keeper he had high hopes for. Amid all the hysteria over Maidana, Máspoli decided to freeze him out and hand a debut to the kid, at the Monumental de Nuñez, in Buenos Aires, against Pelé...

Peñarol won 2-1. One of the stops Mazurkiewicz made was remembered by Pelé as the best goal he never scored (no, not Banks' save, nor the miss after dribbling around Mazurka in 1970). The next morning Maidana was old news. In fact, I don't actually know what ever happened to him or his career after that. Within a year it was Mazurkiewicz and not Maidana starting for Uruguay at the 1966 World Cup.

Died earlier this month, I was at the cemetery. RIP Chiquito :(

Nordahl and Hamrin picked now I see, there is some love out there for my countrymen at least!

Günter Netzer

wonderful midfield playmaker. One of the best in the 70s. Gives me the option to go 4-5-1 if needed.

Me & Jiggs'Hamstring are quite excited about this one. Been massive fans since 90's serie A

George Weah

George-Weah.jpg

To quote my assistant "You have to label Weah 'the best wildcard off the bench you could ever ask for'..."

Scored some incredible goals in the most defensively brilliant league of all time. World & European player of the year in 95, African player of the year in 89, 94 and 95, and one of the most complete strikers of the modern era. WEAH.

Great pick NM, gives you nice options!

Have to tip my hat to Fergusson who discussed them with me. Idea is to have the flexibility to go 4-5-1 if needed. Doubt we will need it though. Tardelli and Neeskens should be enough.

Interesting pick.

Will sleep now and think over my last pick for tomorrow! Btw this thread has been just amazing so far, love reading all the insights on the players. Thank you all!

One thing I realised today when looking for celebrating pics...

I'm playing Gordon Ramsey in midfield

I wonder what would happen if people didn't discuss stuff on here prior to the games. I could see some really hilarious lineups suddenly showing up at games. A bit like American Idol when they can't sing for shit

 No question. MJJ's and Jake's first formations are great examples, never seen anything like them!

MJJ looking great now though!

I think I dropped out of one but not sure I ever completed any. Cant remember any way.

I remember you having a midfield of Keane and Vieira, which your first picks. You lost to Urbanned in the first round who took Keane from you, and eventually lost to me hence transferring Keane to me and be a part of the winning team. :D
