Cantona delivers Ronaldo verdict
Stuart Mathieson
5/ 6/2008

ERIC Cantona has told Cristiano Ronaldo: United will be great with or without you.

The Old Trafford legend is convinced United needn't worry about losing the Portuguese international - insisting they can dominate even if the double footballer of the year moves to Real Madrid this summer.

"United is one of the biggest clubs in the world," said Cantona. "They have been winning, are winning and will continue to win things generation after generation. They will always win whoever they have playing for them."

The truth.

1,700 posts over 43 pages in 12 days.
Given that knowing how these things go, it'll probably drag on for the whole summer, and the transfer window shuts in 89 days, this thread should make over 12.5k posts across 320 pages by then... will that be a record?

Excellent... the rate is increasing. We're now on for over 18,000 posts across 450 pages by the end of August - and that's presuming the rates doesn't keep increasing exponentially, in which case we could possibly break the internet!

Will the wage structure collapse if his team mates want a parity, or near the figure he gets?

If either part of the deal that's been quoted (the wage or the share of the image rights) is true it'll cause uproar which is why I'm doubtful that Calderon can actually deliver it - unless United sold him at a knockdown price.

The simmering saga over Ronaldo's future continues to cast a shadow over United's summer.

The 23-year-old 42-goal winger has promised to make clear his future after Real's much-publicised pursuit of him.

Chief executive David Gill yesterday refused to add more fuel to the Ronaldo debate but revealed he is almost certain to miss their pre-season tour of South Africa.

"Our position is clear," he said. "Alex and myself have stated it in the last week or so and that is all we are going to say full stop.

"Whether he is on the tour depends on how Portugal do in the European Championships.

"The Euro 2008 players will come back three weeks after their team is knocked out when they've had a holiday."

Can you imagine the other Real players sitting back and accepting him earning that much more than them? It will cost them a fortune in wage increases and to be honest I'm very doubtful even Real could fund that deal.

The story everyone is currently requoting, including that Hungarian one I guess comes from Marca. They've even got the cheek to put it in the Real Madrid section of the paper.

Basically it says Ronaldo has told United that he wants to move.

Yeah, MARCA seem pretty sure about this. They say Portugal want him to delay an announcement until after Portugals first game in the Euros.

You see all the spastic Madrid fans posting "Welcome to paradise Ronaldo!" underneath the story.

I don't know. I'm starting to think that Ronaldo really will go through with this and kick up a stink until United are forced to sell him. We could really do without all that drama.

First they say he'll make an announcement within a couple of days (that deadline has passed), then they say it'll be later this week. Now they say after their first match. It's simple really, everytime they have a Ronaldo story on their website they also have a line that sends the readers to buy the paper. That's all it is. A marketing ploy. They want it to drag on and on.

Forgetting all the soap opera bollocks, I want to see Ronaldo sold for @£75 mill. This is nothing to do with Ronaldo or Madrid, just that I think we'd be better with Messi and Huntelaar. It's good business, 50 for Messi and 25 for Huntelaar. Don't tell me Barca would never sell, 50 mill is a hell of a persuasion and Laporta could do with it. No 75, no deal. Tell Ronaldo/Calderon to get working on Barca/Messi/Laporta. When we've got that, he can go and I'll wrap him in bows. Yes, please!

the master plan

I can dream. Won't happen because the bastard won't go. Just out of interest, give me a reason it wouldn't happen.

1. Messi would rather play in italy, Inter and Moratti have been after his signature for a couple of years now and there's a strong Argentine presence at Inter.

2. Barca won't sell their best player!

3. Even if they sell Messi, they'd only do so if they can bring in a good enough replacement. Why do you think we don't want to get rid of Ronaldo? because he's irreplaceable. If Madrid get Ronaldo, they're happy. If we get Messi, we're happy, If Barca sell Messi and don't get a player of similar quality, they wouldn't be so happy.

I think first of all, if he is thinking of moving he's taking his time as before he spoke without thinking.

it would take a brave person to say after everything they think Ronaldos staying because there is an unrationality to his behaviour

I was bothered at first. But really nothing has changed. Ronaldo might eventually speak out and we'll hate him for that, but calderon has made the same speech 3 times now, they've told him to speak out and so far he hasn't.

So i sit here and think, is that logical? If Ronaldo was so despirate to move....him not speaking out is just as unrational surely

But anyway, you never know what's going on behind the scenes :) Facinating stuff

You would also expect Jorge Mendes to have said something.

United have played this very very well. Even if behind the scenes he does want to go, by steadfastly saying he won't be sold in any circumstances United have made it difficult for Ronaldo to come out and say he wants to move to Real. If he does that and United still won't let him go or Real can't finance the deal he's stuck with what will probably be the worst year of his life, getting abused by his own clubs fans.

At the moment United's poker face seems to be doing the job.

I would also add that given what they have repeatedly said, if United sold now there would be uproar and Gill and Fergie would have made themselves look at best fools and at worst down right liars.

Think he's off now tbh

But we must move on, buy the new Ronaldo.

Since many on here think Nani is the new Ronaldo, shouldn't we be buying the new Nani, to replace him when he goes to Real Madrid in a few years time? Although where we are gonna find the new new Nani is beyond me. :)

The Daily Express: Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to offer Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo an astonishing £300,000-a-week after tax to move to Spain.

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,1778_3652748,00.html

See, I just don't believe that. Madrid apparently hold all the cards. They're in spain and apparently Ronaldos 'dream'....-is sick-

So why would they have to offer so much? To tempt ronaldo into taking?

It doesn't make sense to me. As usual, bullshit. They can't even afford the transfer fee...they could never pay such a wage. It would not bode well in the dressing room either.

he's 100% staying

ps: Well maybe 99%..

No you right this Ronaldo guy is way overrated....:smirk:
