Barcelona to join race for Cristiano Ronaldo
By Mark Ogden and Richard Morgan
Last Updated: 9:01pm BST 04/06/2008

Manchester United could be forced to repel the advances of Spain's two biggest clubs in the battle to hold onto Cristiano Ronaldo with Barcelona preparing to rival Real Madrid in the race to sign the Portuguese forward.

Ronaldo, currently preparing for Portugal's Euro 2008 opener against Turkey on Saturday, has been at the centre of a tug-of-war between United and Real in recent weeks, with the Spanish champions making no secret of their desire to tempt the 23-year-old from Old Trafford.

But boardroom tensions at Barcelona could result in the Catalan giants fighting it out with Real for Ronaldo if the club's former vice-president, Sandro Rosell, succeeds in his bid to unseat the president, Joan Laporta, in a vote of confidence amongst Barca's members.

Laporta and Rosell worked together to win the presidency in 2003 and the two men drove the club's ultimately unsuccessful attempts to sign David Beckham from United, who accepted a £25m bid from Barca before selling the midfielder to Real.

Rosell and Laporta went on to split acrimoniously, but reports in Spain suggest that Rosell, a former Nike executive, is planning to spark a battle for the Barcelona presidency this summer, with an audacious plan to sign Ronaldo central to his bid.

With Ronaldo positioned as their flagship footballer, it is understood that Nike would prefer him to move to Barcelona rather than adidas-sponsored Real, should he leave United.

Not as bad as Madrid, I know they have less money, but they have much better 'make weights"

"We would never (approach a player under contract) as this is not the policy of Real Madrid, and especially not with a club who we are such good friends with."

:D..

I wonder how Much Ron will fetch for his house in the summer? What's the market like in Cheshire?

Ronaldo stays quiet; teammates say he is focused only on Euro 2008

NEUCHATEL, Switzerland — While Cristiano Ronaldo remains silent about where he will play next season, his Portugal teammates say the star winger is focused only on this month's European Championship.

Ronaldo didn't talk to the press again Wednesday, and the uncertainty about his future continues to linger.

The Manchester United player said recently that he would soon say whether he will stay in England or accept an offer from Real Madrid, but he is yet to make any announcement since arriving in Switzerland on Sunday for Portugal's final stage of preparations for Euro 2008.

The world's media have been speculating on Ronaldo's future for months, with Madrid reportedly willing to pay a world-record transfer for the favourite to win FIFA's 2008 world player of the year award.

With Ronaldo not speaking, his international teammates end up having to do all the talking on the subject.

"Has he told you his plans? Has he made a decision? What is he thinking?" reporters keep asking during Portugal's news conferences despite being told not to by Portuguese football federation officials.

Some players eventually fold.

"Ronaldo is 100 per cent focused on performing well in the Euro," winger Armando Petit said Wednesday.

Defender Paulo Ferreira also could not avoid the issue.

"Now he is here with us," he said. "He has people working on the other things for him. All he wants is make a good competition. He is a winner and wants to do well."

On Tuesday, it was Real Madrid defender Pepe who talked about his teammate.

"We are here to defend a country," Pepe said. "Cristiano knows this and he doesn't want the (speculation) to influence him."

Man United said Ronaldo won't be going on the team's pre-season tour of Africa, but only to rest after Euro 2008, chief executive David Gill said.

After announcing the July tour of Nigeria and South Africa, Gill reiterated the determination of manager Sir Alex Ferguson to keep Ronaldo, who scored 42 goals as United won the Premier and Champions League titles.

"Our position is clear. Sir Alex and I stated it in the last week," Gill said Wednesday. "That's it. That's all we are going to say on the matter, full stop."

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said Wednesday it would be "impossible" to sign Ronaldo if United didn't want to sell.

"We can't do anything if the owner doesn't want to sell," Calderon told a Madrid supporters group in Brussels.

Calderon denied any deal had been done with Ronaldo and said he wasn't impressed with Ferguson's recent outbursts against the club and Spain.

"To me, it doesn't seem very suitable to say," Calderon said.

Ronaldo practised normally with his teammates on Wednesday in Neuchatel, two days after trainers taped ice around his right foot in what turned out to be only a precaution.

Portugal, which was runner-up at Euro 2004, opens against Turkey in Geneva on Saturday. It then plays the Czech Republic in Geneva on June 11 and co-host Switzerland on June 15 in Basel.

Associated Press Writers Rob Harris in London and Paul Logothetis in Santander, Spain, contributed to this report.

Can I just clarify the issue of contracts that seem to confuse people?

When they say the contract is for 3 years, all that is defining is the maximum length of the TERMS in the contract. It is not a "notice period".

Clubs can and do revise these contracts, sometimes every year, to keep a valuable player for example. This shows that the contracts are flexible, negotiable and not "set in stone".

A player is entitled to "resign" the same as any other employee, but in football it is called a transfer request. If they choose this action, they usually forfeit any rights to compensation under the TERMS of their contract. The same as managers like SGE, Mourinho et al, and that is why they wait to be sacked so they get a payoff.

A club may then try and delay the transfer, and other shenanigans, but it cannot stop it. If the club (the Employer) behaves unreasonably, like asking for a vastly inflated fee, or anything else that attempts to restrict the movement of the player then he (the Employee) is entitled to challenge that behavior in court, who will almost always find in favor of the Employee.

If you are an employee in the UK, with say a 6 month "contract" and you resign, your employer may try and put you on "gardening leave" to delay you starting your new job. If he does that, and continues to pay you the full terms of your contract, and you accept that payment then fair enough. You may elect however to just walk away, forfeit the payment, and start your new job immediately. The employer may take you to court, but only in highly sensitive areas is it likely he would gain anything. As long as you accept no payment, in money, or in kind you will win.

So, what people need to grasp is that footballers are no different to any other employee in Europe, except perhaps in the size of their payments. The law is absolutely biased in favor of the employee these days, and the clubs are ultimately powerless to stop players moving.

I hope that helps to clear up why having a 3 year contract is a bit misleading.

I still think he is going no where

There should be a Ronaldo poll somewhere!
With a 50 page thread of almost complete and utter rubbish it is pretty much impossible to figure out what anyone actually thinks is going to happen with Ronaldo.

Simple poll
Will Ronaldo leave United this season?
Definitely probably yes.

I'm guessing he wants to make a good competition...

thats what everyone has waited 2 or 3 or 4 days to hear
im sure the press will find some kind of subliminal message in ferreira's interview.

what ferreira really said was this: ronaldo's pants have a spanish reporter hiding inside the ass crack, i know this because i always sniff them after training.
while i was having a sniff session today the reporter told me ronaldo has handed in a transfer request, he translated this from ronaldo's farts.

ferreira also stated he will try and get pics, because a thread is useless without good pics, he hopes to do this before this spanish reporter dissapears up ronaldo's arse for good.

an official announcment will be made tomorrow maybe :wenger:

As I just came across this BBC report from 2006, I would say that yes he will definitely go.

Ronaldo wants transfer to Spain

Ronaldo has been at Old Trafford for three years
Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo says he will join Real Madrid or Barcelona after making it clear he wants to leave Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old has been criticised in England for his role in the sending off of United team-mate Wayne Rooney when Portugal beat England in the World Cup.

"I should get out of Manchester as the circumstances are not right," he said.

"Nobody stood up for me and my desire is to play in Spain. Will it be Real or Barcelona? It will be one of them."

Ronaldo claimed: "For some time I haven't had any support from my chief executive (David Gill) or my coach (Sir Alex Ferguson). They should have come out in my defence but no-one did.

"I am calm, I know I have done a good job and I've grown a lot in this World Cup, from a physical point of view and a mental one. In the next few seasons I will be even better."

Ronaldo is under contract at Old Trafford until 2010 and boss Sir Alex Ferguson said last week he expected the player to report for pre-season training.

Actually, your comments are misleading. Mainly because they are wrong. Although the duration is not a 'notice period', the terms, as agreed, will apply for that period until and unless both parties agree otherwise.

The contract can only be varied IF BOTH PARTIES AGREE. It cannot be unilaterally terminated, by either party. The only exception to this is the Webster rule which allows a player, in certain circumstances, to buy out the remainder of his contract. Those circumstances don't apply to Ronaldo.

A transfer request can be turned down by a club - there are loads of example of it happening.

We should loan him out to Sunderland. I personally believe Keano could use a player of Ronaldo qualities.

Keane would try and get him to sign for Sunderland and he'd up his salary. From an interview with Keane back in January:
"If I was to sign (Cristiano) Ronaldo tomorrow on £150,000 a week, I don't think our players would be upset.

"It's none of their business - and the reason he would be getting that is because he's probably the best player in the world.

just seen on setanta news that real are offering £300,000 a week

has to be bullshit

I think we should aproach barca and make a serious swap deal for messi plus some money, if were lucky. they can only say no, messi is the only player to replace ronaldo and it would feck off madrid.

Plus Barca won't want there biggest rivals who already are a better team to get even better. If I was a Barca fan as much I would won't to keep Messi I would not want Madrid to get Ronaldo.

"He wants to make a good competition" is an anagram for "He do go to Spain now. Take me! Ciao" :nervous::(

Actually only if you add the letters "t.m.t" to the second sentence the anagram would be complete.

But what the teenage mutant turtles got to do with Ronaldo's future?

The plot thickens...
