Ronaldo confirmed earlier this week he would remain at Old Trafford this season at least, after Real Madrid failed in their attempts to sign the player this summer, although he did reaffirm his desire to play for the Spanish champions at some point in his career.
With Real smarting from their public failure, their is a strong possibility they will return for Ronaldo at the next available opportunity and there is a sense that a move has merely been delayed by 12 months thanks to Ferguson's personal intervention.
Ferguson himself, however, was talking in much more bullish terms after working with Ronaldo for the first time since the successful Champions League final in Moscow back in May.
"Cristiano has four years left on his contract and at some point hopefully he will extend it," said Ferguson.
"He is happy at Manchester United and hopefully as he gets older he will appreciate being here more and more.
"It does happen to players at this club. They end up never wanting to leave.
"Look at Rio Ferdinand. He joined us as a young man from Leeds United. Now he is a real Manchester United person. He loves the club."
Referencing Ronaldo's stated desire to return to continental Europe to be within an hour's plane journey of his family as one of his motivating factors in considering a move to Madrid, Ferguson said the comparison with Ferdinand remained a valid one.
"Rio comes from another country. He comes from London," he joked.
"It is no different leaving London for Manchester than Portugal. You come north. You come to a colder climate. You come to a wetter climate.
"But you also come to a real football city. There are very few cities like that."
"[Ronaldo] is happy to be a Manchester United player. He always has been. It is just the unfortunate participation of Real Madrid in the boy's life has made it difficult for him. However, the matter is now closed."
"I think Real Madrid know they are dealing with a different animal now.

Do you think he'll be back playing before October?

Exactly. At least CnutofAllCnuts is honest enough to admit this.

Amazing how many people claim that "it was the way he handled it" without at least admitting that the main reason they are pissed off is because he doesn't love the club as much as they do.

Precisely. I've seen people wanting to leave handle it in MUCH worse ways. Spanidh media have been making up crap all summer, while Ronnie has generally said it's up to what United and Real can agree, but that he isn't against staying if it be so.

He agreed with blatter. You can think he knew knothing about what blatter exactly said, but the truth is he did.
Do you know exactly what Blatter said? Because, as I've said on the other thread a few times, I have seen only one poster on this entire forum claim to have seen, and understood themselves, the Blatter interview. And that poster said that his quotes certainly were not quite as bad as what the media has portrayed, as the slave comments were made on a seperate issue and he was then asked about Ronaldo. He then basically said that he should be allowed to move if he wanted, and the two clubs should come to an agreement. Obviously still bad and he shouldn't be putting his nose in our business, but hardly the 'Ronaldo is a slave' that is being made out. The fact that both Blatter and Ronaldo has said that the commonly held twist on the words was not what he said (Ronaldo in fact saying that that wouldn't make sense) tends to back this up.

I have decided that Angela Asante is Ronaldo's sister. She's been spouting all summer that Ronaldo should have his dream come true, now she's got it in for Calderon!:lol::lol:

I had to have one last look at the RonaldoFan website. What a laugh!!

Ronaldo not to be in Spain this summer – Is Calderon a liar?

Has anything made more noise than the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga this summer? This story generated so many points of views, suggestions, suppositions, and rumours and in a whole, so many debates.

Now… the soap opera is over, finally! It seems Ramon Calderon – who described himself as a ‘spectator’ – has now ‘switched off his TV’ and almost forgotten about the soap opera’s leading character, Cristiano Ronaldo .

Calderon declared that Rafael Van der Vaart was probably their last signing of the summer and that should the Dutch man impress, then the Spanish giants will stop their chase for Ronaldo.

He affirmed that it was their desire not to bring in too many players. In the last two years, the Castilians had already transferred 19 good young players to their club.

Like Bernd Schuster always used to say, getting Ronaldo from Manchester United is awfully difficult and though no official comment has yet been done, it looks like Real has failed to let Ronaldo become a Galactico.

Thinking about all the conferences that were made by Real Madrid’s Calderon during the saga, there is an impression that the President was always trying to create impressions rather than being hopeful but realistic over a Ronaldo transfer.

Back in July, Calderon assured Nadal and the Madrid Board that the Portuguese’s deal was ‘done and dusted’. With the present situation, how may one judge this declaration?

Is Calderon a liar?

Whichever, Fergie has succeeded in his fight to keep his talisman Cristiano. ]The Scottish man may look old and quiet but he has proven to the whole that he has the strength to defend his dignity.

yes you, you silly mare. God, I hope she's hot for her sake :). Bangin'

Impressively articulated article... I think most United fans would agree with that.

Personally, I have never gotten that attached to Ronnie because of the seemingly inevitability of him f*cking off to Madrid or some other warm climate in the long run. When you're brought up with heroes like the class of '92, you can put player loyalty in perspective.

It is hard to tell with our current lot of young players who will stay and who will leave eventually. Signings like Hargreaves and Tevez you expect to stay for a long while. I feel like Anderson and Nani are pretty much up in the air.

while he may make salient points re: Ronaldo, i would never congratulate Custis or his like. the thing is, this lot have had an axe to grind with Ronaldo since WC 06, for his imagined indiscretions there.

this is not them siding with Manchester United, this is the same war by other means. they can all feck right off.

I've always thought he'd go with Fergie.

I reckon all this might spur Fergie to prolong his stay. The potential here gets better by the day. I think it's clear Sir Alex never agreed to one year

If I had noticed the Custis thread earlier I would have merged it with this one. Now that thread has too many posts and merging it with this one would result in discussions being broken up. Bahama, please stop acting like a child. Stop creating unnecessary threads. We are not here to baby sit any of you.

SAF thinks he'll be here more than one more season; clearly you know better..

Know i don't better. But what i do know is that we'll be in for 2-3 months of this shit again next summer regardless of whether he's going to leave or not.

Madrid will be back i'm afraid and will probably be more determined than ever to acquire our most valuable asset.

Depends. If Calderon is president or not. The new president might not want Ronaldo. Also, what might happen before next summer. For all we know, Ronaldo might sign an extension to his contract and they could make Kaka their sole target like last year.

Personally, I cba worrying about what might happen next summer. I just care about the present

You really think Fergie may stay more than the two years he said now that he's got Ronnie to stay on?

well it's not just ronaldo because there's a few young players that will excite him. I just think if Sir Alexs future is tied to Ronaldo as many people feel then maybe Sir Alex will fancy sticking around for a bit longer

Just a reminder - - - -

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon claims that if he fails to land Cristiano Ronaldo he will not attempt to make any other signings this summer.

"Either Cristiano Ronaldo comes or nobody does," Calderon is quoted as saying in Marca.
