I wish we had sold him.

Always take verything in media with a large hadnfull of salt.

But, this article had nothing to do with what is true or not. I just said he's written the same as I feel, and most United fans feel.

But wont you feel the teeniest weeniest bit of pride when he collects the World Player of the Year?

According to Ronaldo, a bid did materialise.

I'll repost my work on the translation, posted yesterday;

No prob. But note that Manutd.com's translation (posted by relx, post no. 19446) perpetuates the error of translating 'alegadamente teria apresentado' as 'they had,' (allegedly made a very substantial offer to United.') instead of 'allegedly they would have presented' (a very substantial offer...)

This shows how things do indeed become lost in translation.

The wise always take care to account for this fact.

It's far from entirely clear. But I feel most if not all UK media have simply regurgitated the 'Publico' English translation which originated the mistranslation.

Same old Cuntis, take a dig at a United player at any chance, the only difference this time is our fans actually agree with him.

Don't think the whole of this morning's Manutd.com article has been posted yet;

Ronaldo's here for years to come

Having ensured that Cristiano Ronaldo will remain a United player this season, Sir Alex Ferguson feels the Portuguese winger will find it harder and harder to leave the club the longer he remains a Red.

The United boss was in an open and frank mood when quizzed about Ronny’s recent pledge of allegiance to the club, following a summer of intense speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

Ronaldo's interview with Portuguese newspaper Publico earlier this week have, according to Sir Alex, drawn a line under the affair.

“We’re happy,” the Reds boss said at a press conference on Friday. “His interview was very good. From my perspective, he explained himself perfectly. As I said on Wednesday, the matter is now closed. He’s a Manchester United player and he’s happy to be here. He’s always been happy here. It’s just the unfortunate participation of Real Madrid in his life that has made it difficult for him.”

The United manager was equally bullish when presented with the notion that a repeat episode of Real Madrid's forthright pursuit of the player could take place next summer.

“The important thing is that we have ended all the stuff about Real Madrid,” he said defiantly. “As he gets older, I think Cristiano will appreciate being here more and more. That happens with players the longer they stay here. They don’t want to leave.

“If you look at Rio Ferdinand, who joined us as a young man from Leeds United, that’s exactly what has happened to him. He is now a real Manchester United person. He loves the club. And he comes from another country… he comes from London! It’s a different world there. There’s not a lot of difference from someone leaving London or Portugal
and coming to Manchester. You come north, you get a colder climate, a wetter climate. But you come to a real football city, which very few cities can say.”

Ronaldo, who is now back in Manchester and on a rehabilitation programme following ankle surgery over the summer, will pull on a United shirt again hopefully by the end of September. That is testimony to United and Sir Alex’s resolute stance.

“I think they (Real Madrid) now know they’re dealing with a different animal," added the boss. "I can’t deny that it was an important issue. There are very few players that have left me against my will. I’d have to think seriously about that one.

"It’s unusual for anyone to want to leave Manchester United. Cristiano realises that, too. We had a good meeting over in Portugal and clarified a lot of things. He was good, and I was pleased with that. That’s why I was confident that everything was going to be all right.

“As I’ve said, Cristiano will settle down and enjoy his career here. He’s got four years on his contract, and hopefully at some point we would like to extend it. That’s where we are.”

I don't think Ronnie did much wrong this summer. Yes, he may have wanted to leave, which in itself is not a crime. He did no silly, strike or strop antics, only such crap was reported by the Spanish press.

When questioned, contrary to Custis' attack, he simply said it's up to what United and Real can agree, which would oviously mean that he has accepted that the situation was 'not his choice' or 'not in his hands'. He has generally said he doesn't know what will happen, and he doesn't whish to discuss.

I think the only thing making people bitter here is because he's such an exceptional player who seemingly wanted to leave. That said, he, for my money, conducted himself in a reasonable way, in light of his apparent intentions. He was then persuaded by Ferguson to stay, and has agreed to do so. So what. Just because Scholes wouldn't have gone through that? Maybe he never plans to test himself elsewhere. Ronaldo wanting to do so does not make him a cnut or whatever.

Now i haven't read any of this thread because it was quite long, so i don't know if this post is out of place, but i just posted my opinion of the actual article in question.

I wonder if there will be 492 pages of this next summer when he leaves.

Hey Red, continuing on the Nixon theme how about, "You won't have Calderon to kick around any more" Wonder if his wife has a dog called called chequers, and a good Madrid coat.

It was spelt 'checkers' (ha ha; spell-checkers) named by his 8 yr old daughter becuase of its black and white markings, so Wiki tells me!

'I should say this, that Pat doesn't have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she'd look good in anything.'

What a speech! 'I am not a rich man.' He sure became one though.

I'd rather not play madrid at all. I wouldn't want them to get so close to Ronaldo. It'd only give the media a further excuse in the season to write about this crap

I'd rather they looked on enviously, from a distance :)

Anyone who thinks Ferguson hasn't pleaded with him to stay for another year- hoping he can use the next 9 months to pursuade him to stay longer- is hugely naive.

No one knows, we just think we know. Let it be and whatever happens, happens.

Don't think Fergie 'pleads' with anyone.

The picture of Fergie "pleading" doesn't come to my mind easily

Yes but I doubt he'll be quite as focussed as the last two seasons. What has happened will have affected his attitude and his game. What is clear and cannot be dismissed is that his heart is elsewhere.

I actually think he will make efforts to prove the opposite
He has an ego, that needs to be fed, it can only be fed if he is doing the best he can, and producing moments of brilliance.

Inevitable headlines this year :
When he makes a mistake - he has his mind elsewhere etc etc
When he does something exceptional : and now you can see what Real Madrid are going to pay £?? for

Ron - ometer

I've been calling it that all along, even before it was famous.

I hope the treacherous other posters (they know who they are in this thread) who've said otherwise and used the other pronuniciation, feel only the shame they now deserve.

That cannot be proved but I would say most United fans are pleased he is staying.

To be honest, I'll just support him now in the same way I did last season.

If he's prepared to put in the effort, which he will, because he plays for himself if nothing else, then that's fine.

I've never thought of him in the same way as players like Giggs, as he's never commited himself to the cause, or stated any intention to. He was always going to bugger off to Spain sooner or later.

The disappointment was the way he chose to go about it, but he achieved nothing, other than making himself and Madrid look foolish. United held all the cards from day one, so any other outcome just wasn't possible.

I can support him as a United player still, but he's not someone I'm going to continue liking once he buggers off

On balance, I'm inclined to think Ronaldo is a cnut, yes.

But Cuntis' article doesn't come close to being balanced. It's just a tedious little man, trying to potray himself as the voice of the people. Some of his points are fair (albeit fecking obvious) but overall it's a badly written, biased hatchet job. Which is typical of the rag he writes for.
I will have to stop agreeing with you eventually, Pogue, but not in this instance.
Oh, and what Noodlehair just wrote.

he is our player and he is staying. forget his antics. lets get behind him and our team.

end of story.

The way i look at the ronaldo situation is that he's still young and obviously learning, yes he has done things to warrant pissing united fans off, such as not coming out and quashing the rumours. BUT and this is a big one for the last two seasons he's been pretty much our most effective player and he played a HUGE part in all our achievements since then, i personally can forgive him. I don't see how booing him or being hostile to him whilst he wears the united kit will help us at all.
