Something we forget. With all the media bullshit.

Boo fecking hoo. I wish my younger brother could open up a fashion boutique solely for me to run, or employ me to be nothing but his lackey and regular gang-banger...

His family are another bunch of shameless parasites. Still remember seeing (not reading, or hearing about, but SEEING) his brother and sister getting interviewed in a club during Euro2008 stating how much they couldnt wait for him to go to Madrid, and how they talked down his time at United. And I havent even started on his mother yet! Remember the Marca spread on her in January?

The sooner him and his family piss off out of Old Trafford and we start to find a way to win without him, the better...

so does he mean, that he cannot takle care of his family with the salry he is earning now, People in UK take care of their family earning about the same amount in 1 years time.

Anyways if it was money he was after, i am sure we could bump his salry if need be. I am sure SAF is aware about that. He could have come upfront and asked for better contract. Instead saying rubbish comments on newspaper to piss Utd and its supporters.

Try atleast 4-5 years (or more if you include taxes)...

That is harsh mate, by any standards.

Reading Ronaldo's comments on SkySports he does seem very mature. He admits he is responsible for the controversy, he admits he sought to join Madrid, and he insists that he will be fully committed to playing for United this season. I'd much rather hear this intelligent yet honest self-assesment from him than hear him come out with the usual crap that players come out with.

He wasn't actually quoted by saying much at all but he shouldn't have said (more than once) that he would make an announcement "in a couple of days"... he could have ended all this a long time ago and the press had a wankfest over it with Marca and Sky being the worst culprits.

For the good of the club we need to crack on though

A predictably embarrassing array of 'fans' interviewed on Sty outside of OT tonight

Do we really want to keep a player that we know more or less will leave next season? So much for building for the future etc

How would selling him now be beneficial to us? It wouldn't make our youngsters any better, it wouldn't mean they develop any quicker, and we would have virtually no time to invest the money that we recieve for him.

Not to mention the fact that he will be instrumental for our league and European aspirations again this season...

Family can sometimes be a problem. After all this I finally understand where Ronnie's coming from. Remember his interview after the CL final where he said 'I make no promises to the fans...to my mum...nobody'?

I've seen what leeches in family can do from personal experience, and to be honest it can come from anybody, from your parents to your siblings to your cousins. And usually you go along because thats family and in Ronnie's situation his father passed away early leaving him the sole breadwinner thus more or less head of the family. With that comes responsibility and your own happiness becomes secondary to their needs (most of the time).

They probably pressured him into going, because it so obviously doesn't make sense why he would leave the European Champions, especially when we are just getting started. And Ronnie being a family man, obliged. There is no denying Madrid started it with his mother earlier on in the year and offered him a salary that would have been stupid to refuse.

He's still an idiot for going about it the way he did but many on here, including myself, have been harsh. I think in his situation, he'd want to please his family first rather than the club. I thought this was all about him, but when family is involved it changes the picture completely. His family don't really appear to have his best interest at heart career wise. I guess all they see is the £££, and how much money he can make.

I'm sure if Ronnie was left to his own devices, he'd choose to stay at least until Fergie hangs it up. But, now he probably feels he's let down his family and would be looking to make amends next summer, unfortunately. If anyone deserves blame its the family.

I'm sure he'll give his all this season because if he REALLY hated it here, he wouldn't be here by now.

I guess we have no choice but to enjoy him

I guess the only benefit of selling him now is that we may get more money for him although that may not even be the case. Sorry I just feel slightly uneasy about the fact that as soon as the season is over he can't wait to jump ship.

Just seen the recording.

One of them was my cousin (his first visit to OT), my two sons were behind him taking the p**s.

I thought it was the Ronometer that shattered? Surely that cannot represent your whole world? What about the darts for goodness' sake? Pull yourself together man!

;)

Can finally get back to my wife and sons and Grandkids (if I can remember their names)
Good to know the world's greatest footballer will be back in the red shirt but will he be our hero once again? Quandary.

It's quite sad when you read how he spent thousands of pounds trying to help his father beat alcoholism and his brother with drug addiction. All this during his teenage years. He's definitely his family's meal ticket and I don't think he has received the greatest advice from them.

Yea it is.

I don't care who you are, and what your vocation is, when someone offers to more than DOUBLE your yearly income, only an idiot doesn't think long and hard about it. Especially if he is the family's bread winner.

I hope Utd fans understand this, and don't boo him at Old Trafford

Fergie tells OT faithful : Don't boo Ronaldo

"We knew this would be the case because I flew to Portugal some weeks ago and we cleared the air," he said.

"The boy has been through a troubled time, but once he knew my stance he settled down and he has come out with this interview, which we are all pleased about.

"The fans have got to understand it's very difficult when a young boy is tempted by all this money.

"Particularly a young lad from Madeira. His father died as a young man, so he looks after his mother, sister and brother and you can understand that in a way. But Cristiano has always been happy here.

"We can put this to bed now. It's finished and the boy is a Manchester United player and that's the most important thing."

All in a nutshell.....

Contrite Ronaldo finally commits to United

</EM>

Thursday, 7 August 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo finally ended the summer-long saga about his future last night by pledging his immediate loyalties to Manchester United and taking full responsibility for the uncertainty which has plagued the club for three months.

Ronaldo said he – and not Real Madrid – had been at fault for the drawn out affair but that, following his conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson in Lisbon last month, he was convinced that his future belonged in Manchester. "Ferguson heard my reasons. I heard his and we reached an agreement that for the best of both parties I would stay," said Ronaldo, of their meeting. "Therefore I can confirm that next season I will play for Manchester United."
The 23-year-old has kept open the option of leaving United at the end of the coming season and by taking the blame has maintained the potential for cordial relations with the Spanish club.
"I want to say that I was responsible for all this controversy," Ronaldo said. "It wasn't their [Real's] fault because I was the one who revealed in public my will to play for Real Madrid. I am responsible for all the problems between the clubs. I knew that Real were interested in signing me and that they allegedly had made a very high bid. For a while my desire was for United to accept their offer. To say the opposite would be cheating people and my conscience."
A palpably relieved Sir Alex Ferguson later urged fans to welcome back the 23-year-old with open arms, despite his flirtation with Real and his outrageous claims last month that Sepp Blatter was right to described him as a "slave". Such a line of argument about a £120,000-a-week player was something United fans found impossible to agree with, but Ferguson said the player's personal life must be weighed up when his summer's conduct is being judged. He cited the death of the player's father, Dinis Aveiro, in September 2005.
"The boy has been through some troubled times in terms of the approaches from the people in Spain but once he knew my stance he then settled down," the manager said. "I think the fans have got to understand that a young boy can be tempted by all this money, particularly a young boy from Madeira.
"His father died when he was a young man and he's had to look after his mother, sister and brother. I think you can understand it."
Ferguson insisted on Wednesday that the player's future was secured for United and he clearly considers his own eventual involvement – he resisted the temptation to leave his holiday on the south of France to speak to the player at the European Championship – to have been crucial. "I flew to Portugal a few weeks ago and we cleared the air," he said.
The announcement by the player, through the Portuguese newspaper Publico, has come just in time for United. After seeing his consultant today in Amsterdam, where he underwent an operation on his right ankle a month ago, the player is expected back in Manchester tomorrow.
In marked contrast with the feelings Ferguson came to have for David Beckham, he clearly considers the Ronaldo matter closed and does not feel the need for further conversations. "Cristiano knows this more than anything: he's happy, he's always been happy here. He's never had a complaint about Manchester United," the United manager said. "I've had a great relationship with him, the players have a great relationship with him and I think what we can do now is put this down. It's finished. The boy's a Manchester United player."
Several United players, most notably Rio Ferdinand, had urged Ronaldo to resist a move to Real at the height of the drama and Ferguson indicated that his team-mates had been influential in dissuading him. "He has spoken to a few of the players," Ferguson said.
Ronaldo may fear the kind of negative reaction Emmanuel Adebayor received at the Emirates on Saturday, following ambiguity over his future, but he did what he could to pledge commitment. "Before there are rumours and speculation that I'm staying against my will, I want to clear something up; anyone who says or writes that is lying," he said. "I will play for United with all my heart and soul. I will fight and honour that shirt with all the commitment and dedication that I've always shown."
It was perhaps a reflection of the kind of summer Ronaldo has put United through that the parade of the Champions League trophy around Old Trafford, 77 days after the side overcame his own penalty miss to win it, was noticeably subdued before the 0-0 friendly draw against Juventus last night.
Gary Neville's absence from the teamsheet – his manager suggested he would recover from his latest muscle strain to make it for this match at the start of a season when his future career seems back in the balance – did not help either and Ferguson also confirmed that Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick would both miss the Community Shield. "It's a bit of a concern," he admitted. Nani is suffering from a calf strain but it is not thought to be serious.

Prize guys: Ferguson’s squad pose with the European Cup and Premier League trophy before United’s 0-0 draw with Juventus at Old Trafford last night (Martin Rickett/PA)

Sir Alex Ferguson could barely contain his smile. The Manchester United manager may have expressed confidence that Cristiano Ronaldo would stay at Old Trafford in the wake of their summit meeting in Lisbon last month, but the Portugal forward’s declaration last night that he would be going nowhere will have lifted a heavy weight off the Scot’s shoulders.
Ferguson’s mood darkened somewhat when he was asked how United’s fans might react to a player who has made no secret this summer of his desire to join Real Madrid, however, and in a clear attempt to avert a potential revolt among the Old Trafford faithful, the manager proffered a case, albeit an unconvincing one, in the Portuguese’s favour.
If anyone has cause for complaint with Ronaldo, it is Ferguson, but while the player may well end up being reprimanded in private, the manager stuck by the policy that has served him so well for 22 years at United by mounting a rigorous public defence of the 23-year-old.
For all their bluster, Real never lodged a bid for Ronaldo, but Ferguson argued that the interest alone and offer of vast riches — the Spanish champions were reportedly prepared to make him the first £200,000-a-week player — could easily turn the head of a young man.

And by making a pointed reference to the death of Ronaldo’s father, Dinis, in September 2005, Ferguson implied that the player had struggled not only to come to terms with the tragedy, but also the realisation that he and he alone would be responsible for supporting his family.
“I flew to Lisbon a few weeks ago and we cleared the air,” Ferguson said. “The boy has been through some troubled times in terms of approaches from the people in Spain, but once he knew my stance he settled down and he’s said this tonight, which we are all pleased about. It is very positive and we will welcome him back this week.
“I think the fans have got to understand that a young boy can be tempted by all this money, particularly a young lad from Madeira.
“His father died when he was a young man and he’s had to look after his mother, his sister and his brother. I think you can understand it . Cristiano knows this more than anything, he’s very happy, he’s always been happy here.
“He’s never had a complaint about Manchester United, he’s always been treated properly.
“I’ve got a great relationship with the boy, the players have a great relationship with him. I think what we can do is put this to bed now, it’s finished. The boy is a United player and that’s the most important thing.”
Whether Ferguson’s pleas fall on deaf ears remain to be seen, although there is no disputing the anger felt by United fans towards Ronaldo. Many expressed outrage at his claims that his situation at Old Trafford was akin to slavery, especially given that the player earns £120,000 a week, when some of them are struggling to meet the cost of rising ticket prices.
Others felt that he besmirched the name of United by going public with his desire to move to Real so soon after helping the club to the Barclays Premier League title and the European Cup and that such a show of disloyalty represented a cardinal sin that was largely unforgivable.
Ronaldo, at least, seemed to recognise that his remarks had been poorly received, although whether his public apology is enough to win back the support and admiration that he enjoyed last season is unclear. Whatever happens, the reception he receives at Old Trafford once his ankle injury has cleared up should be interesting.
Patrice Evra, the United defender, and Sam Bethell, the Chelsea groundsman, yesterday denied charges issued by the FA over the fracas at Stamford Bridge after the Barclays Premier League game between the teams on April 26. Both men have requested personal hearings.

The Ronometer was the first to know......then it exploded!

The Ronometer is the best thing to have come out of this thread. Its stuff of legends. I'm sure every United fans who walks the earth in every far corner of the earth will have heard of the Ronometer.

Maybe you should start a ronometer thread showing how the Ronometer fluctuated throughout the whole saga.

We're still in specualtion mode as to how he will be received so the thread still has a purpose albeit one with not so much dread and one in which the fans are now in control of the future, instead of Marca and AS

cnut, or not a cnut? That is the question.....

Hmmmmm....you want a Ronometermeter

I dont mean to come across as a dickhead, but his father died three years ago. Plus, he and his father were not on the best of terms as it was, due to him divorcing his mother and generally being a drunk..

However, the only person from Ron's family who had an ounce of gratitude towards United was the aforementioned drunkard father. Oh, the irony...(!)

I'd guess that his statement is designed to cover up Real Madrid's role in unsettling him rather than being the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I'd also guess that united wanted it that way to leave it open to sell him to Madrid if and when we want to.

You can be sure of one thing. Any words coming out of United's mouth have been carefully thought out, discussed and OK'd.
Who knows what goes on behind closed doors. We will surely never know.
