So he's cleared everything up then...he'd rather play for Madrid than us, but has accepted he will have to stay here till SAF says otherwise...well that makes me feel better:( At least he's being honest I suppose, but he can feck of to Madrid tomorrow for all I care.

Fair shout. How many players don't fall into that category though?

Few. However that doesn't make it acceptable, or even palatable.

But, as I said, an apology is of little interest to me. You should never apologise for something you don't regret, and I have no doubts he would just be pandering, and would do it all over again if he had to. As I have said all along, I don't begrudge him his wish to leave, it is the manner in which he has attempted to make it happen.

Roll on the new season.

Assuming no further twists to the saga, this should now signal quite the victory for us. A good moment.

Seems likely that Ronnie and Fergie have reached a deal of some sort, which is fine.

He obviously still wants to go and sadly the same thing will occur end of next season. Took him long enough to come out with this (but he probably knew he was going nowhere anyway at the end)

Saying that im happy its been announced and all this crap can be finished for now.

Well I am happy. This is a victory for football. Contracts remain a sign of trust and we dont give in to Real Madrid's blatant tapping up.

Ronaldo will be here for at least another season and thats all that matters.

Surely most true fans are happier tonight than recently? I know I am.

Will Calderon survive this?

'You have failed me for the last time Calderon!' (Choking sounds)

That statement means feck all as it has been obvious for weeks that we weren't budging from our position on the matter, all this statement has done is re-enforce the fact that he did want to leave and he'll do likewise next summer - again which we all knew already

Well, everyone is different. I won't be taking part in any of these 'Viva Ronaldo' chants at Old Trafford - unless we, the fans, get some sort of apology.

We've supported him for 5 years; what's the harm in asking for an apology from the player we all worshipped 4 months ago?

United fans need to put this behind us.Get on with supporting the whole team and hopefully getting that one step nearer to knocking the dippers of there perch.

i think the best part of the interview..bar--i'm staying...is he says he'll play for united with his heart and soul...definetley a legends line..

Ronaldo will never be a legend, he'll be gone this time next year and we can start focusing on Rooney & Anderson instead.

Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted Cristiano Ronaldo is staying with Manchester United.

The Portugal winger has been linked with Real Madrid throughout the summer, with the Spanish club maintaining their interest even though United repeatedly stressed Ronaldo would not be sold.

But the 23-year-old has now told Portuguese newspaper Publico that he will be staying at Old Trafford for at least the next 12 months.

Key to that dramatic development was a meeting between the player and Ferguson in Portugal just after his country's exit at Euro 2008.

At the time it seemed certain Ronaldo would leave, but Ferguson managed to persuade the Madeira-born player he was better off where he was.

"We cleared the air in Portugal, and the boy spoke to a few of the players as well," said the Scot.

"The thing is, he knows he is happy here - and has always been happy here.

"The fans have to understand it has been a very difficult time for him. He has been offered all this money - when his dad has died a young man and he is looking after his mother, his sister and his brother.

"He has had a troubled time, and you can understand that.

"But once he knew my stance, he settled down - and as far as we are all concerned, the matter is finished. The boy is a United player - that is what is important."

Ferguson knows he will continue to be plagued by questions over Ronaldo and is equally aware the speculation will begin again next summer - given the player's claim he still wants to play for Real one day.

Maybe we can keep this thread open, in case RM make a late bid, we have Jan transfer window as well to look forward to.

Also these would make this thread a record in itself.

Something we forget. With all the media bullshit.

I don't get where all these reporters are getting "only 1 year" thing. He actually said "foreseeable future" and admitted that Real Madrid would offer him "higher earning" package then that he's getting at United.

He obviously still wants to play for Real Madrid, and inevitably one day he will, but i think we will choose when that will happen.

so does he mean, that he cannot takle care of his family with the salry he is earning now, People in UK take care of their family earning about the same amount in 1 years time.

Anyways if it was money he was after, i am sure we could bump his salry if need be. I am sure SAF is aware about that. He could have come upfront and asked for better contract. Instead saying rubbish comments on newspaper to piss Utd and its supporters.

Thats just Fergie trying to get the fans back on Ronaldo's side because he knows how much hes pissed them off.

Ronaldo is on so much money here no fan can relate to his problem of 'only' being on 100k+ a week to support his family.

we knew he would play for madrid from day 2 after he signed...cos he said so!

No we couldn't have. We already gave him a good contract just a year back from the 1st comments. Whats the point of giving him a new contract year in, year out if were just gonna give him a new one. The club took a good stance in saying "no new contract" and Real offered him a lucrative deal it looked like.

The sooner the season gets started the better for me. At least this saga is over ..for now.

It's quite sad when you read how he spent thousands of pounds trying to help his father beat alcoholism and his brother with drug addiction. All this during his teenage years. He's definitely his family's meal ticket and I don't think he has received the greatest advice from them.
