Italy coach Lippi backs Man Utd over Ronaldo

Updated: August 2, 2008, 7:13 PM UK

ROME, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Italy coach Marcello Lippi has backed Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson's determination to block Cristiano Ronaldo's desired move to Real Madrid.

'The 100 million (euros offered) by Real is astonishing. But not everything can be bought,' Lippi said in an interview in Saturday's La Gazzetta dello Sport.

'I think it's right that a player is not authorised to have the last word always.

'Ferguson is stubborn. I think Ronaldo will stay at Manchester. It's the right decision from a technical point of view.

'However, Portugal's result at the European championships shows that not even Ronaldo can win a big tournament on his own.'

Lippi reiterated his admiration for Ronaldo's Manchester United team mate, England striker Wayne Rooney.

'I'm in love with Rooney,' he said. 'It's beautiful to see him run after his defender until the (corner) flag. He's the prototype of the modern champion.'

The 2006 World Cup winner added that he thought it was a shame Frank Lampard was not moving from Chelsea to Inter Milan.

He ranked the England international as one of the world's top four midfielders, along with AS Roma's Daniele de Rossi, AC Milan's Andrea Pirlo and Barcelona's Andres Iniesta.
He also had kind words for Barcelona's Argentina forward Lionel Messi, describing him as a 'football genius'.

The cover says:
D Day in the Signing of the Century
CR7 will tell Manchester that he wants to go to Madrid
The club expects his presence tomorrow but he has no intention of travelling.

Nothing new from Ron, Mendes etc - in any of the articles, just more of he same.

Calderon's supposed to see Mendes today and Madrid expect to start direct talks with United.

Expect some desperate measures this week - Robinho says he wants to leave (and we know Calderon would never keep an unhappy player ) and they've just lost Sneijder.

The Sneijder story on the Marca's cover is as confirmed by Madrid's doctors.
Internal ligament damage, possibly cruciate ligament damage too in which case a layoff of 6 months is expected (otherwise three with the damage already confirmed). It says he was hunted by Diaby and the ref didn't even blow.

The club expects his presence tomorrow but he has no intention of travelling.

In case anyone thinks Ron returning to Manchester might actually signify something. Fear not - that would also mean that he's off to Madrid.

AS say:
http://www.as.com/futbol/articulo/f...ter-cristiano/dasftb/20080804dasdaiftb_33/Tes

I'll summarise.
After intense discussions beetween Ronaldo and Mendes, it's been agreed that the best thing will be for Ron to return to Manchester for face to face discussions rather than risk United action over breach of contract.

However in that meeting, AS says that not only will Ron say he wants to leave, but also that he's not interested in an improved contract with United and that he won't train or accept orders from the club (thus delaying that breach of contract by a day if you take AS literally)

AS also includes RvN's comments about how the speculation has gone too far (for Madrid players) and how he thinks Ron'll stay at United because United don't want to let him go.

In other words - something will happen. Maybe.

The cover says:
The club expects his presence tomorrow but he no intentention of travelling.

So in that instance the club would still refuse to sell him but also get to dock his wages until he stops being a prick? That would be my preferred outcome.

But if he does travel back tomorrow, then its only because he's going to tell Fergie he'll leaving, lol

Ruud: Nobody Bigger Than United

Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is confident that Sir Alex Ferguson will succeed in keeping Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United, regardless of the Portuguese winger's wishes...

Ronaldo has been gunning for a mega-money move to the Santiago Bernabeu all summer, but Ferguson has remained steadfast in his refusal to let the 23-year-old leave Old Trafford.

The United boss has shown no such possessiveness with his superstars in the past, having ousted the likes of Paul Ince and David Beckham as soon as they got too big for their boots.

Van Nistelrooy was another to leave the Red Devils after falling out with Ferguson.

Many criticised the Scot's decision to sell the Dutch poacher, who scored 150 goals in 201 games during his time in England. However, United have won two Premier League crowns and a European Cup since his departure, thoroughly vindicating the manager's stance.

Hence, the 32-year-old understands that Ferguson will do whatever is best for the club - and if that means keeping Ronaldo, then that is what will happen, according to the Oranje star.

"In those meetings, if he wants to keep the player he’ll do everything he can to do so and he’ll probably succeed as well," Van Nistelrooy said on Five Live’s Sportsweek.

"What he is doing is in the interests of Manchester United. That’s what he always thinks of.

"Nobody is bigger than the club and it’s true. Will Ronaldo stay at United? I think so."

Ronaldo doesn't have the balls to face Fergie directly and DEMAND a transfer. There is no way he will move to Madrid now.

Well Ronaldo said Sir Alex was 'formidable'. This as and marca writing contrasting stories about Ronaldo - will he travel will he not - is funny shit.

To the madrid fans; :D..

Ronaldo doesn't have the balls to face Fergie directly and DEMAND a transfer. There is no way he will move to Madrid now.
If he really wanted it I think he would. When he really puts his mind to something he does seem very strong in his belief. But as it is it's only a small preference for Madrid over Utd, he's not going to make a big deal out of it.

Unfortunately, because he's also not going to come out and say no to Madrid (and piss them off and perhaps risk a future move to them), it allows the media and Madrid themselves to make a big deal out of it. And most people, when inundated with the amount of bullshit that they have been this offseason, end up over-rating the amount of impact that Ronaldo has actually done himself.

Anything in the Madrid wing of the Spanish press now is intended to make the move sound inevitable. It's mostly simple variants of the idea that we're at the, "just haggling over the price," stage in which the only things to be resolved are how fast can a deal be done, how painful will it be and how will people save face.

What we don't know is whether there has been a change of heart at United and SAF has concluded that if Ron wants to be a lemming then it's now a matter of minimising the mess - probably with every step being watched by Maurice Watkins. What we also don't know is whether Ron actually intends to break his contract (not just say he wants a move and hand in a formal transfer request).

Expect body language analysts, lipreaders, the person who nicked Ron's house keys, Marca reporters who can't get into Carrington, etc etc to be in great demand over the next couple of days.

The Spanish press think that if United won't move and Ron breaks his contract then United will report Ron and Madrid to FIFA and it'll turn into a very ugly batle, culminating in an arbitation court.

Giggs: More to Man Utd than Ronaldo

Ryan Giggs says there's more to Manchester United than Cristiano Ronaldo.

"The thing about last year was that although Cristiano had a massive season, it was the squad's strength in depth that made the difference," said Giggs.

"It's hard to pick individuals, but for the players who have had a bedding in time and starting their second season, like Anderson, Nani, Carlos Tevez and Owen Hargreaves, they'll all be better for the experience."

You tell 'hem Giggsy:devil:

I actually heard what Giggsy said and to be fair it wasn't quite as quoted by Tribal Bollocks. That said, there is nothing wrong with what he did say

More than 4 hours without a post.

Standards are slipping.

Once Ronaldo is back tomorrow, I'm sure the thread will pick up again

approaching tuesday and the transfer request coming up if you believe the tabloids.

it's funny watching the tabloids.

basically AS/Marca invent a story about a supposed showdown with SAF this week, the UK press pick it up, take it as gospel, and then run with it, trying to make it sound like the Showdown at OK Corral or something.

ridiculous.

even more ridiculous are the people who should know better and still kow tow to the rags.

Have no fear, I have returned from the internet to my earthly abode. Just in time by the looks of it.
Answers today? Maybe. It's also my 60th birthday. Looks like a very busy day.
