Cristiano Ronaldo 'never coming back' to Man United as Real Madrid saga continues
Cristiano Ronaldo is due back in Manchester this week for rehabilitation work on his ankle, though reports across this morning's media suggest a resolution to the player's proposed transfer to Real Madrid is still to be found.
Real Madrid's relentless pursuit of Ronaldo and the player's unwillingness to publicly commit himself to United mean an assessment of his fitness after surgery on a troublesome ankle will almost be secondary to a face-to-face meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson and discussions over his future.
Conflicting stories in today's newspapers, however, even question whether such a meeting will take place.
The Mirror quote unnamed sources close to the player saying that Ronaldo is reluctant to return to Manchester at all, and will try and force United's hand by staying away from Old Trafford as long as possible.
Ramon Calderon, the Real president who has repeatedly inflamed the situation between the two clubs over the course of the summer with deliberately placed comments in the Spanish media, stayed behind in England after the club's pre-season tournament at the Emirates Stadium hoping to speak with United.
That meeting did not materialise, however, reports suggest that what the Mirror describe as "cracks in United's resolve" are starting to appear.
The weakening, in private, of United's hard line stance that Ronaldo is not for sale has prompted his unwillingness to face Ferguson in Manchester, hopeful that a £70 million deal can now be struck between the two clubs.
Reports elsewhere suggest that a deal has been done in principle but on the understanding that the move will be delayed until next summer, allowing United to get another season out of Ronaldo while he is in his prime and still cash in on his value in a year's time.
A Sun exclusive suggests that United's owners, the Glazer family, are ready to hand Ronaldo a get-out clause that will allow for his release in 2009, agreeing with the player that he is free to join Real for a fee of around £65 million at that time.
The paper quote another unnamed United insider who claims that Ferguson remains one of only a couple of people at the club who see value in trying to forced Ronaldo to stay against his wishes.
The compromise of delaying a transfer is designed to appease Ferguson and get him to concede defeat in his efforts to hang on to the player.
Ferguson has yet to be convinced, but with Real unlikely to drop their interest having been rebuffed in attempts to buy world player of the year, Kaka, the longer the situation remains unresolved the more likely he is to acquiesce to the arrangement.
Ferguson spoke to the player face-to-face in Lisbon prior to United's pre-season trip to South Africa and left content that Ronaldo would be a United player next season.
However, reports of Ronaldo's change of heart will only at fuel to the growing animosity aimed at Real.
Ronaldo's injury means he will not play before the transfer deadline at the end of August.

CRISTIANO Ronaldo should be given the green light to step up his recovery programme this week.
While talk of a showdown between Ronaldo and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson seems to have dominated certain agendas, particularly in Spain, the Reds are more concerned about the 23-year-old's recent ankle operation.
Reports in Spain a fortnight ago suggested today would be the day Ronaldo told Ferguson face-to-face of his desire to leave for Real Madrid, but he is not expected to fly back until later this week.
He is now due to visit a specialist in Amsterdam to discover how successful his surgery has been.
Only after that is Ronaldo set to report in at Carrington, meaning it will be the end of the week at the earliest before he can speak with Ferguson.
Impression
And given the United boss is under the impression both men discussed what they had to during a meeting following Portugal's exit from Euro 2008, he is not expecting any further dialogue about Ronaldo's future.
The Reds - and Ferguson in particular - have made their position perfectly clear on the matter. And that is that Ronaldo, after just one season of a five-year contract, is going nowhere, no matter what price is placed on his head by officials at the Bernabeu.
It is a situation Real president Ramon Calderon may find difficult to stomach but could be forced to accept given his repeated recent protestations that his club do not want to get involved in luring Ronaldo away from Old Trafford and will only act once Old Trafford officials signal their willingness to do a deal.
Such statements have been greeted with mirth at United given the blame being placed at Calderon's door for the discussion over Ronaldo's future, which began almost as soon as the player got his hands on the Champions League trophy in Moscow last May.
Although United have a healthy disregard for reports that come out of Spain, claiming most, including those that stated Ronaldo would return today, have been proved false, they are aware most of them originate from Real.

Even if he's not sold there still needs to be a replacement. That coward will never dare set foot on the Old Trafford pitch again.

United wait on Ronaldo recovery

While talk of a showdown between Ronaldo and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson seems to have dominated certain agendas, particularly in Spain, the Red Devils are more concerned about the 23-year-old's recent ankle operation.
Indeed, United officials have reacted with some amusement to news of potential negotiations between Ronaldo and Ferguson, not least because the Portugal winger is not due to fly into England until later this week at the earliest.
Reports in Spain a fortnight ago suggested Tuesday would be the day Ronaldo told Ferguson face-to-face of his desire to leave for Real Madrid.
However, that will not be the case given he is now due to visit a specialist in Amsterdam to discover how successful his surgery has been.
Only then is Ronaldo set to report in at Carrington, meaning it will be the end of the week at the earliest before he can speak with Ferguson.
