Crunch time for Ronaldo as the prodigal returns

United or Real Madrid? The Portuguese star is due to meet Sir Alex Ferguson this week

Cristiano Ronaldo will undergo arguably the most gruelling examination of his career in Manchester this week. While Manchester United's medical team assess the state of the Portugal international's right ankle, Sir Alex Ferguson will look him in the eye and test his resolve, attitude and motivation. The answers may determine whether it is the beginning of the end of the tortuous Real Madrid transfer saga or of Ronaldo's time at Old Trafford.
The most coveted player in the world is due to visit his employers one month on from ankle surgery in Amsterdam as United, with whom Ronaldo signed a five-year contract worth £31m in April, inspect his recovery and clarify a timeframe for his return.
That he will be involved in United's pursuit of a hat-trick of league championships is, according to Ferguson and the club's chief executive, David Gill, beyond doubt and they can certainly lay claim to being the only party with a consistent line throughout a transfer tale now in its fourth month. But until Ronaldo comes out and confirms he will be staying at an Old Trafford without Carlos Queiroz and that the "dream" of Real Madrid has died for another season, the doubt lingers.
Ronaldo's meeting with his manager may take place today, the second time they have come face-to-face this summer, and it will take an intransigent performance from the 23-year-old, a show that convinces Ferguson he has lost the player's heart and mind to the Bernabéu, possibly even a transfer request, for the winger to have any hope of winning the argument. As Ruud van Nistelrooy, himself a prolific goalscorer for United and allowed to join Real Madrid only at Ferguson's behest, has said: "The meetings can be a bit lively but overall what he [Ferguson] is doing is in the interests of Manchester United and that's what he always thinks of. In those meetings, if he wants to keep the player, he'll do everything he can to do so and he'll probably succeed as well."
Few players have left Old Trafford against the Glaswegian's wishes and it has aided United's stance, and caused disquiet in Madrid, that Ronaldo has not thrown any tantrums to leave in public. He may have rekindled Ferguson's distaste for the cult of celebrity that surrounded David Beckham by partying in his plaster cast in Los Angeles, and retain the unwavering devotion of only those United supporters who have not reached puberty by keeping Real's interest alive, but he is not entirely lost to the Old Trafford cause yet.
With the dubious exception of a quote claiming to reflect what Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, thinks his client might say when he returns to Manchester, the player has kept his counsel since his last private encounter with Ferguson - a wise move since the odds against his departure lengthen as the transfer deadline draws nearer and United's determination to keep him, from the Glazers down, holds firm.
In contrast to United's consistent stance, Real's tactics - though not their ultimate wish - have changed with the prevailing wind. Ramón Calderón, the Madrid president, yesterday undermined his argument that Ronaldo represented all-or-nothing for his club in the transfer market this summer when the Spanish champions sealed a £10.3m deal for Rafael van der Vaart. The Dutch international midfielder has harboured an ambition to appear in La Liga on account of his Spanish mother and will be unveiled in the capital today, having agreed a five-year contract.
His arrival from Hamburg provides Real with an immediate remedy to the loss of Wesley Sneijder, another creative Dutchman, who could be out for three months after damaging knee ligaments in the Emirates Cup defeat by Arsenal. A renewed effort from Real to sign Ronaldo for a world-record transfer seemed inevitable the moment Sneijder was carried off on Sunday. Van der Vaart's arrival suggests not and that even Calderón has lost confidence in his pursuit of United's No7.
Not that Real have stopped flirting. As Michel Salgado said yesterday: "We know Cristiano Ronaldo is an incredible player and we don't have a problem about him coming here. The galácticos are the past. I think the best of Real Madrid now is the group and the dressing room.
"If he comes, he will excite the fans for sure. At the Bernabéu, the supporters are used to watching all the best players in the world and Cristiano Ronaldo is now one of the best players in the world."
Even that mantle, however, is no guarantee of success in a spat with Ferguson.
Hello, Old Trafford

How the returning Ronaldo might greet Sir Alex Ferguson today
Ronaldo Hola, mister. I've come back to rot in the stands
Ferguson Say hello to Louis Saha while you're up there, will you
Ronaldo Boss, you'll love this. Rio put me up to it. See that hidden camera - you've been merked. Shake my hand
Ferguson Sorry, son. My mistake. I could have sworn you said throat
Ronaldo I don't suppose you've got a key for these shackles knocking about?
Ferguson It'll take me a wee while to find it ... about five years
Ronaldo Let's kiss and make up
Ferguson Fine - you'll need make up after I've given you a Govan kiss
Ronaldo OK, you win. I'll stay. But I'm going to marry Geri Halliwell and commute from Hertfordshire
Ferguson On second thoughts, I'll just get David Gill to give the Bernabéu a ring

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United future to be resolved with Sir Alex Ferguson

Cristiano Ronaldo's future will finally come into sharper focus this week when the Manchester United winger returns to the club to step up his rehabilitation from ankle surgery and, more pertinently, for further discussions with manager Sir Alex Ferguson that should resolve the player’s status at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo was in Lisbon when he saw the Portugal national team physio Antonio Gaspar, whom he is due to see again before returning to Manchester.
His Dutch surgeon Niek van Dijk, who operated on the ankle four weeks ago, should give the go-ahead for the second stage of his recovery programme to begin shortly.
But it is Ronaldo’s meetings with Ferguson, set against a backdrop of Real Madrid’s relentless pursuit of the player and his failure to commit himself to United, that will carry greater resonance than updates about the Portuguese’s fitness levels.
It will be at least four weeks before Ronaldo returns to more serious training, and he is not expected to play before the end of September. A more pressing deadline, however, is Aug 31 and the closing of the transfer window, by which time Ferguson will expect to have brought the matter to a close.
While Ferguson insists there will be no transfer, his greater challenge is to retain Ronaldo as a fully motivated member of his squad if the player retains any desire for a move.
Ferguson flew out to Lisbon for face-to-face talks with Ronaldo immediately before departing with the rest of his squad for the club’s pre-season tour to Africa in mid-July. He declared himself satisfied with the meeting, and reiterated his view that Ronaldo wanted to remain at United.
The issue, however, has refused to go away, with a steady stream of reports from Spain claiming Ronaldo is still adamant he wants to move to Madrid, and that he has been urged by the Spanish club to submit a transfer request if Ferguson refuses to yield in his stance that the player will not be allowed to leave.
Yet while the manager will have winced at Ronaldo’s public utterings that have done little to endear him to his employers and prompted a groundswell of opinion among supporters that he should be sold, Ferguson is determined to get at least one more season out of a player who did more than anyone todeliver a Premier League-Champions League double last season.
Ferguson, meanwhile, got the better of his son Darren as Manchester United defeated League One side Peterborough 2-0, with Darron Gibson sealing victory late on.

This one looks like major BS to me........

Madrid Set Date For Ronaldo Presentation

According to Portuguese sports daily A Bola, Real Madrid have already set a date, or perhaps a final dateline, to present Cristiano Ronaldo to the world…

The moment of truth is here. The Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga is predicted to finally come to a close this week with the player himself expected to confront Sir Alex Ferguson and the Manchester United owners to sort out his Old Trafford future once and for all.
It is most likely to be a battle of wills: a question of whether the Portuguese can convince his manager to let him go or whether the Scot can persuade his superstar to stay.
Over in the Iberian Peninsula, meanwhile, the thorn in Manchester’s side all this while, Real Madrid, are already jumping the gun and they appear to have set a presentation date for the wing-wizard: August 15.
Madrid are believed to have tabled a final bid of around €75 million for Ronaldo, but the final figure is likely to come closer to €85 million, with the English champions looking to milk the Spanish champions for everything they have.
A large chunk of Madrid’s money will come from the sale of Robinho to Chelsea, a transfer that is almost certain to materialize if Los Blancos get the green light from the Red Devils to move in for Ronaldo.
If the deal does go through, it is expected to be one of the most highly anticipated player presentations in history, overshadowing even that of David Beckham’s.

I was watching CNN yesterday and they have a TRUTHOMETER. Nearly fell off my chair. They're using it with Obama and McCain.
Obviously they couldn't call it a bullshitometer so they've gone the other way.
My lawyers have been informed. (actually I think it was jason [is he alive?] who introduced it to the Ronometer. Have you seen it jase?

Tomorrow he'll come back and say

" No, i joke, I always say i want to stay, i think i'm at right club, and i'm in a good way "

He will say, "Why is everything with so polemic with Ronaldo"

Welcome back, Bahama, the thread missed you.
And happy birthday! (see my thread re testosterone injections - the miracle treatment for the over 60s ;) )

This Guardian reporter seems to be a "Top Red".

What would be the likely odds Ronaldo kissing United badge on his first competive goal?

Tomorrow nights trophy celebrations should be a major pointer of his mindset. I'm hoping he turns up and joins the players, after all he did play a major part in last years achievements - It will also form part of his public relations exercise.

Happy Birthday, BR. Remember a man at 60 can do almost all things as a man half his age......................But, only half as often.

Happy belated birthday, the legend.

Btw, the Mirror says Ronaldo doesn't want to report back to the club for obvious reason.

I'm sick to fecking death of Ronaldo. The little shit has ruined my entire summer (Is that sad?). I really couldn't care less whether he stays or goes anymore.

MANCHESTER UNITED will try and convince Cristiano Ronaldo to stay one more season — by promising to then let him go for £65million.
SunSport understands United’s owners are considering giving the Real Madrid target a contract get-out clause.

But they will first have to sway boss Alex Ferguson who is dead against selling the Portugal winger.

A United insider said: “Sir Alex is determined he will not let Ronaldo go now, if only on principle.

But there are one or two people at United who are thinking ‘What’s the point of hanging on to him?’ when Real are ready to offer so much money.

“And Ronaldo will miss the start of the season in any case through injury.

“One solution being looked at is for Ronaldo to stay one more season, with the guarantee he can go for an agreed fee at the end of next season.”

Boss Fergie has categorically refused to sell Ronaldo, who has made it clear he wants a move.

And there is no certainty the Scot will accept a compromise.

Real are ready to offer a world record £65m to nab the player this year and there have been reports in Spain they would even pay £80m.

Madrid president Ramon Calderon is desperate to snap up the United star, having failed to land World Player of the Year Kaka from AC Milan.

Calderon is a hugely unpopular president, despite back-to-back titles, and sees signing Ronaldo as the coup that will keep him in charge.

Ronaldo is due back in Manchester later this week to have his ankle injury reassessed and is expected to be out until October.

Today he has front row tickets to see veteran singer Julio Iglesias on the Algarve, after the singer invited him along.

Dont know what to make of this - it is the sun.

65m! that will get you ronaldo's ear.

Where is the replacement if he is to be sold?

I think we've left it too late to even consider replacements now. How many top teams are going to want to lose there best players this close to the end of the transfer window?

Ribery would have been a good signing but God only knows how long he's gonna be out for with the injury he sustained in the Euro's.

Best thing to do is make Ronaldo honour at least one more year of his "Slave" like contract and then ship him off next summer once SAF has identified his replacement(s).

Depends how you define "live"..

I'm in a bit of a mess right now.

My folks are about to turn 60 soon, and seeing as I didn't think people lived beyond that age, I've counted on getting my inheritance soon.

How am I gonna tell the wife that we have to sell the house? :(

Ronaldo: I Am Not Going To Manchester
Cristiano Ronaldo is refusing to return to Manchester to talk to Sir Alex Ferguson and United about the ongoing saga with Real Madrid in a new twist to the tale.

The 23-year-old has opted to stay away from negotiations that were scheduled for today (Tuesday) and will now incur the wrath of the English giants.

Marca, who have been central to the entire storyline linking the player with Real Madrid, believe that he has told friends: "I am not going to go to Manchester."

While that is emblazoned on the paper's front page, inside Ronaldo was less forthcoming when a a reporter caught up with him as he only commented: "I cannot say anything right now."

According to the story, the Madeira-born star does not want to make a statement for fear of jeopardising any chance he has of moving to the Bernabéu this summer.

Instead, he is going to remain in Gerés, a small town in the north of Portugal and consider what he should do next while his representatives talk to the Red Devils.

Ferguson appeared confident that the player would stay for at least one more season after a visit to Portugal last month and the English press have said that a deal could be in place for him to be sold next summer.

But Madrid's persistence may well be paying off in yet another turn in the road for what has been the story of the summer so far and the next step could be an angry one from United.

Rumours persist that the Spanish club may have used a trick that the previous regime at the club have carried out in the past when Luis Figo moved from Barcelona.

A pre-contract agreement was signed then by the Blaugrana star that if Florentino Pérez won the election then he would move, b ut if he refused to then he would have to pay €30m to escape from the deal.

That effectively meant that Figo was left with little choice and the transfer went through and stunned everyone and the same could be on the cards for Ronaldo.

the saga rumbles on. :annoyed:
