Italy coach Lippi backs Man Utd over Ronaldo

Italy coach Lippi backs Man Utd over Ronaldo

Updated: August 2, 2008, 7:13 PM UK

ROME, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Italy coach Marcello Lippi has backed Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson's determination to block Cristiano Ronaldo's desired move to Real Madrid.

'The 100 million (euros offered) by Real is astonishing. But not everything can be bought,' Lippi said in an interview in Saturday's La Gazzetta dello Sport.

'I think it's right that a player is not authorised to have the last word always.

'Ferguson is stubborn. I think Ronaldo will stay at Manchester. It's the right decision from a technical point of view.

'However, Portugal's result at the European championships shows that not even Ronaldo can win a big tournament on his own.'

Lippi reiterated his admiration for Ronaldo's Manchester United team mate, England striker Wayne Rooney.

'I'm in love with Rooney,' he said. 'It's beautiful to see him run after his defender until the (corner) flag. He's the prototype of the modern champion.'

The 2006 World Cup winner added that he thought it was a shame Frank Lampard was not moving from Chelsea to Inter Milan.

He ranked the England international as one of the world's top four midfielders, along with AS Roma's Daniele de Rossi, AC Milan's Andrea Pirlo and Barcelona's Andres Iniesta.

He also had kind words for Barcelona's Argentina forward Lionel Messi, describing him as a 'football genius'.

Isn't it nice to hear some respectful manager talking sense and the media reports it! :-)

Brilliant about the Rooney comment!

lol Ronaldo is the best player in the world and said he'd like to play in spain oneday. Adebayor did a simular thing to Ronaldo, was linked to milan and barca and boom..until he signed a new contract.

The reason it doesn't happen is because of profile and the fact that 99% of the league talk but no one gives a shit and in fact most players have more respect for the club/fans etc

Fabregas get's quoted ALOT. You read one thing, you read another and it's all a contradiction. Loyalty to arsenal. Maybe in the future. Blah....

Do you not think your paranoid? The job of the media is to print storys, true OR FAKE. er hello? How many stories has Sir Alex denied are true this summer alone? lol

But the point is Fabregas is a more straight forward talker where as Ronaldo will say only God knows which leaves open room to debate....

It's called being rational. You dicks think you know something the rest of the world don't but you also assume your opinion is fact.

What your saying may very well be true but to dismiss other possibilities shows how thick you are

Oh and just imagine if it was people like you that forced him out of the club over what you read/heard/saw? Isn't that undermining the club/manager and giving the people we fecking hate what they want??>..

your right in both posts!

Lippi coming out with statements like that doesn't surprise me, aren't he and Fergie very good mates?

The first thing Fergie will have thought of when deciding whether or not to keep Ronaldo is what is best in United's interests and if he thinks keeping Ronaldo is that, then thats fine by me. He is not stupid, he knows what he is doing. On top of all of that, why give Madrid what they want? Unless you want to send out a message to them that they can keep on tapping up players and clubs will always give in, that is.
and 68 million isn't enough for Ronaldo

Spot on reddev.

The Spanish/Portuguese press today proudly presents:

Several papers describing SAF's - don't know where players will be in two weeks, never mind two years - comment as either an indication that talks are underway or more simply as "surrender"

Marca had a couple of their reporters stood outside OT yesterday interviewing fans. Their survey says: If he wants to go - let him. It's today's front page of the print edition.
http://www.marca.com/primeras/08/08/0803.html

AS - has a whole new timeline for us to enjoy. Starting with SAF's "surrender" and his comments about only having two strikers (Roo and Tevez) it moves on through Calderon canceling his Monday meetings in Madrid and comes up with:
- Calderon and his chums will meet Mendes in London today or tomorrow
- Mendes will present Madrid's "latest" offer (75m Euros) to United, which is an interesting idea given there hasn't been a previous offer
- Mendes will tell United that Ron will not return from Lisbon
- United will negotiate and Madrid will go up to 85m and buy him

So there we are - done and dusted. Or not.

Who were these wankers giving quotes to MARCA before Ole's game? If I saw a reporter from MARCA nosing around at Old Trafford I'd run them out of the place.

LOL@this article
Calderon and Schuster are going to look so stupid

Real Madrid President Ramon Calderon has been very public with regard to his views over the incorrectness of Cristiano Ronaldo being held against his will by Manchester United – now his principles are going to be given a stiff test after Robinho has asked both his president and manager Bernd Schuster to let him go to Chelsea. Robinho made the request during a meeting in London today:

"I want to go to Chelsea just as Cristiano wants to go to Madrid – it’s the same thing.”

Real Madrid had hoped to keep the skilful attacker in Spain with an increased contract offer although the deal falls short of what he can earn at Stamford Bridge, however, what seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back was Calderon’s offer to use Robinho as a make-weight in the Ronaldo deal - this public gaff by Calderon looks to have made the Robinho transfer to Chelsea possible.

I can’t imagine any Manchester United fan or Alex Ferguson wishing to see one of their closest rivals for silverware strengthened by the likes of a player of Robinho´s calibre – but I bet one or two might even smile a little at this latest development.

Over to you Ramon! Let’s see if you really do believe that it’s wrong to hold back a player that wants to move! You could even celebrate the fact that your club is involved in such an important transfer – just like you urged Ferguson to do!

 Spanish Media....

At least Ronaldo will be back this week. The end to this saga is getting closer, at least for this year.

Focus back on Ronaldo after Real blow

Real Madrid could step up their pursuit of Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo after Wesley Sneijder suffered a serious knee injury.

Madrid have been relentless in their bid to lure the United star to the Bernabeu this summer, despite the European champions' insistence that he is not for sale.
Sneijder suffered a knee injury in Sunday's 1-0 Emirates Cup defeat at Arsenal which could sideline him for up to six months.
The Holland international left the field on a stretcher after an hour following a heavy challenge by Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby as Madrid went down 1-0 - a result which handed the trophy to Hamburg, who beat Juventus 3-0 earlier in the day.
Real's veteran defender Michel Salgado insists he does not know anything about the progress of the transfer but believes the club could now up their pressure on United.
"We (the players) don't know anything about it," he said. "It's a problem for the club - for (sporting director) Pedja Mijatovic and the coach.
"We are players, we only think about football.
"But now Wesley Sneijder is injured and he's an important player for us.
"Maybe tomorrow there will be a meeting with the people in the club and maybe then there's going to be news about this."
Salgado also claims the players and the fans would welcome Ronaldo to the Bernabeu with open arms.
"We know Cristiano Ronaldo is an incredible player and we don't have any problem with him joining us," he added.
"Real Madrid making an offer is normal. Manchester United and (coach Sir Alex) Ferguson don't want this because he is a very important player at United and that is normal too.
"I think they're going to have to talk about this and if Cristiano Ronaldo is coming to Real Madrid the dressing room is waiting for him.
"If he came, of course the players and the fans would be excited. The supporters are used to watching the best players in the world at the Bernabeu and Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world."
While Salgado admits the Portugal international would be a great addition to the team, he also claims the Primera Liga champions don't necessarily need him.
"We have a very important group now," he added. "I feel the best of Real Madrid is the squad and the dressing room and if Cristiano is coming here we don't have room for him in the team.
"But, as I said before maybe with the injury to Wesley Sneijder maybe we need someone else."
Salgado is well qualified to judge the needs of Madrid having been at the Bernabeu since 1999.
The Spain veteran claims he cannot see himself leaving the Spanish giants anytime soon, but revealed he would love a move to England if he does.
"I've been 10 years in Real Madrid," said Salgado. "It would be very difficult to move.
"But if I move from Real Madrid, I'd love to go to the Premier League or Dubai."

Not much difference there.

Our players will not mention Berbatov to the press until a deal is finalised. They will not talk about how he will be welcome with open arms and how the fans will love him etc. Madrid players on the other hand, see no wrong in mentioning Ronaldo like a deal is done.

Ruud riled by Ronaldo rumours

Van Nistelrooy expects Portuguese ace to stay with United

Last updated: 3rd August 2008
http://www.skybet.com/skybet?action=GoEvType&id=1&aff=1456&SS_PromoAd_Man_UtdRuud van Nistelrooy does not expect to be playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid next season.

The Spanish giants' former Manchester United striker has seen speculation over Ronaldo's future dominate the sporting agenda this summer.
And the Holland international believes Real's preparations for the new campaign have been affected by the ongoing saga.
Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant that the Portuguese phenomenon will not be leaving Old Trafford, but that has not stopped Real in their very public pursuit.
Coach Bernd Schuster was the latest to speak on the subject on Saturday when he claimed that they have not given up hope of luring Ronaldo to the Bernabeu.
Over the top

Van Nistelrooy has revealed how his team-mates are becoming a little weary of being pushed out of the spotlight by the constant speculation.
"It got a bit too far maybe, it is such an issue at the moment in Spain. It gets a bit over the top," Van Nistelrooy told Radio 5 Live.
"A couple of our players, they made the comment that there was only talk about him and not about the current team and stars, and everybody's waiting for the next rumour without anything concrete."
Asked whether he expected Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford for the forthcoming campaign, the Dutchman added: "I think so, if you hear the statements from United.
"It doesn't really sound like they'll let him go."

Sounds like they think he's a cnut too

So, it's over this week? Great.

lol yeah it is. We'll see at first hand how the recent as story was bollocks and also on sunday is the charity shield. It is much to late in the day now.

Madrid have been unbelievably stupid in thinking they could get Ronaldo for a knock down fee

Can't wait for him to get back. Great player.
Isn't he a cnut though? Not sure if cnuts playing for United is a good idea.

Isn't he a cnut though?

well he's the same boy he was after the world cup for me. He's not changed one bit, except of course for becoming exceptionally good.

if he can do it again for a season or two, maybe longer then it'll be great for the club, supporters and at least people can get used to the idea that at any moment he could be gone (but not for a good while yet) :D

Also don't trust a word he says. I imagine it's like loving a bitch

You forgot the becoming a cnut bit.

nah after the world cup it was obviously he was a bit of a dreamer. I cannot be arsed to think of him as a cnut. I think, he has a blind spot sadly. He'll never change but I think he does love the club in his weird way.

You mean it's not over?

To quote the Microsoft bug-fixing department, "real soon now," or was that "Real soon. Now!" Hmmm.

Anyway, I digress. Next week is the big one.

Either Ron has agreed to break his contract, SAF has "surrendered" and negotiations are (almost, almost) underway - Madrid will offer 75m Euros and the deal will be done at 85m (mas o menos).

Or Ron'll have a scan in Amsterdam and, if the ankle recovery is on schedule, he'll return to Manchester, have a chat with SAF and go home to Alderly Edge to check out his newly installed hot tubs.

In an ideal world Marid will go into next season with no Sneijder, no Robinho and no Ronaldo. And the reds will go marching on, on, on.
