For Real Madrid, Ronaldo is gold dust on and off the pitch as they are even willing to shell £60M plus to get hold him, they are certain they could make back the investment through marketing.

Our wage bill stands at 43% and could break the 50% barrier as Nani, Anderson probably getting three-fold increase a season down the line plus improved contracts for Vidic, Evra, Rooney and Tevez and Fergie might even go shopping for a striker and a top notch goalie soon.

Ronaldo’s wages standing as it is wont damage the wage bill and also he is worth more on and off the pitch in the next four seasons..more than £60M or £70M that Real Madrid can offer.

With him around we might end up with couple of league titles and an European cup in the next four seasons and also his increasing marketing value at the same wage is a bonus.

They’ve tapped him up and he has behaved like an utter prat...There is no second thought but if we bend over to Real Madrid, they might come sniffing around for Tevez, Rooney or Anderson in the future.

Bottom-line: Ronaldo has four more years remaining in his contract and let him stay as long as it lasts and go on a Bosman. He wont risk his career by taking on Fergie and ending up in the reserves.

Fergie and Gill should keep mum and get on with the business of strengthening the team. 23 is a young age for any individual to handle fame and money...who knows three years from now on Ronnie's priorities might change could marry a fat lass that hates beaches and finally settle in Manchester.

 Completely agree, keeping him for four more years will earn United hundreds of millions, as well as much success on the pitch. Come four years time, I will happily fly Ronaldo to Madrid myself, it would also be fun to see Calderon lying in some gutter then too

Some actual news (kind of) albeit not about the transfer.

Ron appears to have reached the limping with crutches stage, as opposed to the hopping with crutches one. He's even hit the "bit of hobbling about with some kind of aircast" phase.

Those of a sensitive disposition should not click on the link (though those with a medical/physio background might find it of momentary interest):

He's like Michael Jackson, but in reverse. Keeps it up maybe Nani can start taking interviews for him

It gets me wondering whether the same thing will happen with Anderson, Nani in the future with Real Madrid. Especially I am sure Anderson and Nani will only become better and better. Dreading that day.

If United don't sell them Ronaldo, they won't have the revenue stream to get them like they got from Becks. Sadly, I think they want Ronaldo more as a stream of revenue than as a player, someone should tell Ronaldo he should get a good chunk of his image rights if he goes to Madrid. I mean if they don't give him at least half of his image rights, Madrid will clearly be treating him as a slave.

They still carry a fraction of the Galactico image created in early 2000s by Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo and Beckham but it will run out rather soon. They need someone to fill in the void left by them in terms of marketing and advertising and Ronaldo is exactly the player they need - there's hardly anyone worshiped by kids more than him and he's the best recognized player in the world. No wonder they want him, but it's not the only reason - he's fairly good at football as well.

Agreed but they clearly want him for his Galactico status more than for his dazzling footballing ability. If they get him it's win-win for them, if not shit's gonna hit the fan for Calderon

You've been away haven't you?

No need cool guy - once we've fecked them off at the high port they ain't gonna come sniffin around our manor again; you get sacked and have all your dreams screwed up that way (will become evident shortly)

'The Football Managers' Handbook,' (page 1);

United? - Don't mess with THOSE guys!

Thought for the day.

If Ronaldo (and indeed others like Barry) really want to move so badly, why don't they sacrifice their contract severance and put a transfer request in?
No chance United selling someone with four years left on a dealing and paying up his contract.

That's why we have to stand firm against Real's bullying, because it's bizarre when we stop wanting our players to improve.

Glazers back Ronaldo retention
Manchester United chief executive David Gill has revealed the Glazer family are fully behind the decision to retain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's future has been in doubt since the latter stages of last season following public interest from Primera Division champions Real Madrid.

It has been strongly reported that Real are poised to launch a record-breaking bid for the Portuguese, should he declare his intention to leave Old Trafford.

However, the Red Devils are standing firm amid the speculation, and have on numerous occasions insisted the 23-year-old is not for sale.

And Gill has confirmed that the club are unanimous in their decision to keep Ronaldo after he explained that a brief meeting at the UEFA Champions League final with the owners, the Glazer family, confirmed their desire to retain the two-time PFA Players' Player of the Year.

Full stop

Gill said: "We saw them (the owners) at the Champions League final and the speculation was already present then. It was a short, quick conversation.

"Under the PLC regime, we would not have had to sell him but we would have had to be more public.

"We would have had to consult major shareholders a lot more. Ultimately it would have been a more public situation.

"As it is we have had one phone call, one chat in Moscow and the decision was made. Full stop."

Contract

He added: "You cannot say what will definitely happen in a year's time. But by then he will still have three years left on his contract.

"Let's not worry too much about it. He is at the best club and Alex is very comfortable about it.

"We may give him another contract next summer, you never know. I have not, however, had detailed discussions with his advisors."

Pepe - Ron wants Real move
Real Madrid defender Pepe has hinted that Portuguese compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo has his heart set on a move to the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo has been persistently linked with a record-breaking transfer away from Old Trafford amid Real's public pursuit of the 23-year-old winger.

United are, however, adamant Ronaldo will remain at the club, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently holding talks with the forward.

Pepe, though, who joined Real from Porto last summer, believes it is 'normal' that Ronaldo is reportedly keen to join the Primera Division champions.

"It's normal he wants to come. If he comes to Madrid he'll be welcomed by everyone," Pepe said in The Sun.

"The directors, players and fans welcome you here - Cristiano won't have a problem.

"He has said many times that he likes Madrid. He knows the great history of Madrid and the club that it is."

Hansen Backs Utd Over Ronaldo

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen has questioned the character of Cristiano Ronaldo in an exclusive interview with Setanta Sports News, and heaped praise on Manchester United for standing up to the bronzing wantaway.

Hansen made 620 league appearances in an illustrious Anfield career that yielded eight league titles and three European Cups.

The former Scotland international cannot begin to understand why Ronaldo would want to leave United in the summer after they won the league and European Cup double.

And he believes Sir Alex Ferguson will have done football a service if he holds off Real Madrid’s advances this summer.

"I only go on what I see in the papers but in the modern age if a player wants to go and someone wants to go they tend to sell them," Hansen told Setanta Sports News.

"But I think Manchester United have done really well with Ronaldo, making a stand and someone had to make a stand.

"When I played the contracts were all in favour of the clubs. Now they're all in favour of the players. It's too easy for a guy to say he wants to go after signing a contract.

“Whether Ronaldo stays or not we'll have to wait and see. Man United have made a stand and it's good a stand has come from the top.

"It’s a bad system where you can sign a four-year deal, win the Champions League and win The Premier League and be the best player in the country - and possibly the best player in the world – and still turn around and say you're unhappy.

"Why are you unhappy? You've just won the Champions League. You've just won The Premier League at a great club. But 'I'm unhappy, I want to go somewhere else'.

"I think there's something fundamentally wrong with that, there's a flaw in that system somewhere that people can be allowed to do that and its great Manchester United have taken a stand."

There is one or two things I disagree with on Hansen (which is nothing new because the guy regularly spouts rubbish on MOTD)

about Ronaldo being unhappy and wanting to go 'somewhere else'. Wanting a new challenge is not the same as being unhappy at your current club. Look at Arshavin at Petersburg for example. He said he was happy there but felt it was time to move on. Also, the way Hansen has said it, is implying Ronaldo is so unhappy has demanded to go anywhere else that will have him when we all know there is only one club he wants to go to.

I think Hansen means it doesnt matter where he wants to go, be it Real Madrid or anywhere, he has a contract and is doing well at the club so should honour it.

Maybe if he was in a position where his contract was holding back his career you could understand it but thats not the case.

That's irrelevant

So there should be a system that means someone can't say they're unhappy? What? That's just bollocks - people are happy/unhappy for loads of reasons - not all of them rational and most of them internal to themselves.

As for whether there's a system for ensuring that professional contracts are two way things and a change of mood is insufficient reason to break one - there is one. It's called a contract and United weigh up which contracts they're willing to sell and players may/may not disagree.

I'd be staggered if Ron was unhappy about winning the Champions League, playing for a great club, becoming the best player in the world or getting serenaded by the fans.

If he's restless and a combination of factors - financial, family, maybe even the injury reminding him of how short a football career can be - has made him ask the question: "If one day - why not now?" I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Some people hear the challenge of: the hard thing is to retain it.
Some people hear the siren song that says: you've done it in England, prove you can do it in Spain.
For me it's easy! We want the player, Madrid want the galactico, and that would be a waste of someone who could become a great.

Guti's been spouting the same trash, so, is there any madrid player who hasn't spouted forth on this topic, what next, the old girl in charge of sangria rations?
