Arsene Wenger has for once thrown his weight behind Sir Alex Ferguson by accusing Real Madrid of "destabilising" Cristiano Ronaldo.
Wenger's spats with Fergie have become legendary in the Frenchman's 12 years as Gunners boss - their rows adding spice to Arsenal's battles with Manchester United for the title.
But Wenger reckons his old adversary has every right to moan about the way Real have gone about trying to poach Portuguese wing wizard Ronaldo.
"If you don't show respect to other clubs, I think that football is moving in the wrong way," said Wenger.
"You cannot come out like president Ramon Calderon has done at Real Madrid with Manchester United, and tell them they cannot stop a player from leaving.

//

"You can destabilise any player in the world - that is irresponsible.
"The big clubs should have values and vision, and be setting an example to others. If we do not do that in football, then we do not understand our responsibilities."

I sense the tide is turning, with even Arsene Wenger supporting united in these issue.

I'm glad Gill's so confident....

Gill's pledge over Ronaldo

22/ 7/2008

UNITED'S heels remain firmly dug in over the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga and chief executive David Gill says the Reds will not budge.

Real Madrid continue to nibble away hoping United will cave in and the 23-year-old winger himself continues to muddy the waters with his comments.

But Gill insists that Ronaldo will be back at Old Trafford and in a Red jersey this season.

"We made it clear to them (Real Madrid) from day one we wouldn't welcome a bid, it wouldn't be accepted and therefore I don't think there is not much point in putting one in," he said in South Africa.

"Obviously there has been lots of paper talk and a lot of coverage in the media about it and we understand that. But the reality of it is we have been very firm from day one.

"Cristiano is a great player, a great asset of Manchester United, he is on a long-term contract with Manchester United and hence we will keep him at the club.

"Sir Alex had a very good meeting with him and we look forward to him returning.

"It would be silly to say it is not frustrating. That is obvious. We want to move on."

United supporters appear to have grown weary of the saga and had begun turning against the 42-goal hero. But Gill believes he will be welcomed back in the dressing room and eventually by the Reds fans.

"In terms of the squad Alex is a past master at that. He would be very comfortable that that integration could happen very quickly and I am sure that will be the case," Gill added.

"From the fans' point of view, yes, there will be a small number who are not particularly comfortable with his utterances but when he is back playing and showing his skills and scoring the goals, things are soon forgotten."

The Old Trafford chief is also confident that relationships between Real and United won't be unduly damaged.

"It is not a helpful situation but we will move on. We will get on with them (Real Madrid) and if we are drawn against them in Europe it will be very cordial," he said.\

I think he just truly means that only God knows the future. I think it may be a cultural thing. My wife is from Chile, and I'm surrounded by Latins here in Miami. And I hear a lot of expressions that are similar. Portuguese and Spanish cultures have a lot of similarities, so I can see those comments being far more innocent than a lot of people (here and in the press) make them out to be.

This is very insightful, Spartan. Different cultures have very different ways of handling situations and what many caftards find to be cnutish behaviour may be no such thing where Ronnie comes from. Park is another case in point - many players from other cultures would have gone moaning to the press after being omitted from the CL final, despited apparent promises, but in Korean culture you don't do that.

With regard to the Mirror's pathetic rip-off of Bahama's Ronometer, it looks like we have Third Columnist traitors from the media among our members. Is it not possible for the mods/admins to track down the ISP addresses of all computers inside newspaper offices, match them to members here and "out" the feckers, so we can flame them to death/ban them/find out where they live and push dogshit through their letterboxes?

I fecking hope that happens. 0 - 3 at the Bernabeu and 4 - 0 at OT. At the final whistle, all our players take off their shirt jerseys to reveal T shirts with the message "feck off Calderon you shit spouting bellend"

Footballing Nirvana.

Although I really felt the whole Ronaldo saga is a misunderstanding between himself and the fans about his intentions coupled with alot of BS from the media and Calderon himself, Ronaldo has to help himself by speaking out. As the club, his team mates and manager can only adivse him what move is the best for him, we cannot force him. Moreover players themselves have to choose what is best for themselves, and make the correct decisions. I am sure Ronaldo himself wants to fulfil his boyhood dream, but as we all seen Real isn't the same force as it was in the past, and it is an obvious downgrade for him. That itself is a difficult decision to make.

On another hindsight, if he leaves it is definitely a loss for us. But we move on. SAF could switch tactics and change our focus in attack. Tevez, Rooney and Evra and company could have bigger roles to play and opponents might find it difficult to mark out every single one of them. Pros and cons.

I dreamt that I was in a big meeting of some sorts, and someone asked me about something lame and unloyal someone did. I replied "like Ronaldo" and started laughing, got everyone with me, then I realized that Ronnie was sitting two seats away getting hurt and leaving for the elevator. Took him about quarter of an hour to gather the strength to return to the meeting.

- He really didn't have to try that hard.

Aw, bless.

No wonder SAF thinks he's better off in Manchester.

As he lost weight?

GUTI WOULD WELCOME RONALDO AND ETO'O

Real Madrid playmaker Guti insists the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo would not disrupt team spirit.

The Manchester United winger has been linked with a lucrative move all summer and would likely be one of the highest earners at the Bernabeu should a transfer go ahead.

On Tuesday Real captain Raul refuted suggestions Ronaldo's arrival and wage packet would upset the harmony of the squad, and Guti has followed suit, endorsing the winger as one of the best players in the world.

"Real Madrid need good players and Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player you can bring in right now," Guti said at a press conference.

"We would be delighted to have him. He wouldn't upset the good atmosphere, and anyway people tell me he's a great person and a good team player.

"Everyone works to earn as much as they can get and if he's one of the best players in the world he should earn more.

"Maybe he won't win you the Champions League on his own, but he's very tricky and he'll win you games. With players like that you've always got chances to win plenty of titles."

Guti would also welcome unsettled Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o back to Madrid if a move is sealed.

Eto'o has been told he can leave the Nou Camp this summer, and although he is reportedly the subject of interest from Real, it would be a controversial move for the player who left on a sour note in 2000.

"He did it before (play for Madrid) and he's one of the greats of football," Guti said of Eto'o.

"I have a great friendship with him, he's a great player and a good person. If he comes he'll bring a lot to the side. He's a great player and Real Madrid always sign great players."

Guti also believes the Bernabeu crowd would welcome the Cameroon international back.

"Madrid fans are very understanding and if Samuel does things well and scores a lot of goals then we'll all be happy," he said.
