In which case he may have already accepted he's coming back to United but now knows that in the process, he's pissed off his boss, angered the fans, been trashed by the press, dented his marketing value, had a so-so Euros and now he can't even kick a ball. No gain, plenty of pain.
Alternatively, he really had thought that United would be embarrassed enough to let him go, Madrid would bid high enough to make it easy and United (knowing that the fans would be annoyed with him rather than the board) would welcome the cash. In which case he's still thinking about why he signed that contract last year.
