Ferguson puts foot down and tells Ronaldo he's staying put

MARK OGDEN in Cape Town
SOOCCER: ALEX FERGUSON has delivered a seemingly terminal blow to Cristiano Ronaldo's hopes of a summer transfer to Real Madrid by telling the Portuguese forward, in a face-to-face meeting in Portugal, that he will still be a Manchester United player next season.
Having agitated for a move to the Spanish champions since the end of last season, Ronaldo, currently recovering from ankle surgery, had hoped to break Ferguson's resistance and secure a transfer to the Bernabeu.
However, the United manager insisted in Cape Town yesterday that the "very amicable" meeting with Ronaldo ended with the player being made fully aware that he will remain at Old Trafford beyond the closure of the transfer window on August 31st.
Ferguson said: "I went out to see Cristiano in Portugal earlier this week. It was very amicable and there were no problems, so therefore we carry on. There is no problem for Manchester United or the manager.
"What I said to Cristiano will remain private, but the meeting went well. We both made our points of view about where we stand and where the player stands. And I can say that he will be a Manchester United player next summer. That's our stance, he won't be sold.
"It's not a difficult position for us. I don't know where people get this thing from. I was on my holiday and I was not going to interrupt my holiday - believe me - for the simple reason that the boy is under contract. The strength and the rights are with Manchester United."
Although Ronaldo might yet muddy the waters once more by rejecting Ferguson's claims, the player himself will be out until early October as a result of the ankle surgery he underwent two weeks ago.
Ferguson said: "He is on crutches for the first four weeks and will be in rehabilitation for the next four weeks. Then the following four weeks he will be back into football training. The time mapped out is three months and we won't bring him back a day earlier than that."

Say something Ronnie

It's the only way........

Speak up, Ronaldo

18/ 7/2008

GARY Pallister has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to come clean about his future intentions.

Sir Alex Ferguson met Ronaldo on Monday before the player flew out to the United States and the Manchester United boss left for South Africa and the Red Devils' three-match tour.

No details have been given about the precise nature of the discussions, although Ferguson is bound to come under pressure to deliver an update in Cape Town ahead of tomorrow's clash with the Kaizer Chiefs.

But Pallister feels it is time for Ronaldo to reveal his plans and state whether he intends honouring the five-year contract he signed last summer.

"I don't know whether the situation has been influenced by agents or Real Madrid but I feel now is the time for Cristiano to say exactly what he wants," he said.

"Like many observers, I have grown tired of the way the issue has been talked around and Cristiano bears a big responsibility for that.

"He has kept saying he will announce what he wants to do but for one reason or another, it never seems to happen.

"It is only last summer he signed a five-year contract. He should say whether he will see it out - and if not, why not?"

The mere fact Ferguson met with Ronaldo - just 48 hours after stating he would not travel to Lisbon - is welcome news.

Although the battle to keep him has been waged with some force throughout the summer, it had been felt Ronaldo's chances of remaining at Old Trafford were being undermined by the departure of Ferguson's assistant Carlos Queiroz, who played a major role in persuading the winger to stay after his fall-out with Wayne Rooney at the 2006 World Cup.

But Pallister is certain Ferguson will not give up without a fight.

"This is the best Manchester United squad I have ever seen," he said.

"They are Premier League champions and European Cup winners. I have to admit, there is no obvious reason why Ronaldo would want to go.

"I realise he has a dream to play for Real Madrid but why would you wish to leave a club where you are on the brink of so much.

"And he also needs to recognise it is United who nurtured his talent and made him the best player in the world.

"Yes, he had all the skills but there is more to it than that."

However, even if Ronaldo leaves, Pallister is convinced United will recover, although he would not choose to be without a man who scored 42 goals for the Red Devils last season.

"United have lost people like Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane in the past and emerged stronger. I am sure the same would be true with Ronaldo as well," he said.

"Nani and Anderson both did well last season and with a bit more experience under their belts I am sure they will improve again.

"Sir Alex will want to keep Ronaldo but anyone who thinks Manchester United will face insurmountable problems if he goes does not know the nature of the club."

Gary Pallister was speaking ahead of Setanta Sports' exclusively live coverage of the Vodacom Cup, including Kaiser Chiefs v Manchester United at 14.30pm on Saturday 19th, Orlando Pirates v Manchester United at 19.10 on Tuesday 22nd, and KChiefs/OPirates v Man United at 14.30 on Saturday 26th July. "I don't know whether the situation has been influenced by agents or Real Madrid but I feel now is the time for Cristiano to say exactly what he wants," he said.

And I feel it isn't.

He's said what he needs to, to the only person who needed to hear it - face to face.

We've known for 5 years that Ron had one eye on Spain (except when actually training and playing for us or talking to prospective United signings, like Nani or those Brasilian twins, about the club). We've known for a couple of months that the question: "If one day, why not now?" had come up again, this time with more force than ever, and each time the question was asked he was finding it harder to say, "Because I'm not ready to leave."

It's time for Ron to stay quiet until he's ready to stand in front of a camera, smile and say, "I'm looking forward to playing for United again." And you don't need to a be a psychologist to know that after the summer he's had, and faced with the fact he can't even go and kick a ball to get rid of the excess energy and frustration (something that's obviously been an escape valve as well as a joy since he was a kid) he shouldn't even try and do that until he's ready.

Regarding Ronnie

This is my response to that locked thread, which got locked while typing this. Hope mods will not nuke it.

feck off. You're just reacting to the media.

All he said was "I stay" and "I believe I'm at the best club for me".

The rest of the open sided comments are basically made and encouraged by his agent and entourage to try get a better contract from United.

The worst of his comments so far is "If they pay me and United what they said they would" which is nothing compared to what Keano or Brown said or did. How can anyone blame him for even considering when sums of up to £300,000 a week were even mentioned while United refuses to consider him a pay raise point blank?

Who's to say the often used examples of Neville, Scholes or Giggs would stay at any point if they were offered such an ridiculous amount? I know I wouldn't. If anyone did, they're an idiot. You may not like this but the rule number 1 is to take care of yourself. As Keano said, loyalty goes both way and the club wouldn't for 1 second hesitate to feck over a player. After all it's business.

If United refuse to "pay him as the best player in the world" then why do the fans/United keep on going on about it? With some even going so far as to say he is the best ever! All this led to the put your money where your mouth is last year when the agent came out saying just that in the papers.

As for the agreeing with the slave comments, all I can say how the hell do we know what he meant or he meant what he meant anyway? For all we know he don't even read the papers and were fed the line of "Blatter think that players can move more easily if they wish" and just agreed with it.

After all it's not like he's the most educated or someone with best upbringing in the world anyway.

Personally I find what Ronaldo has done so far is 10 times better than that feckwit Beckham who royally screwed us. Beckham was worth a lot more money than any footballer at any point in history and yet we only got £20 million for him all because his wife and adidas wanted him out. Barca offered £30 million but he only wanted Real.

I also think you lot put too much weight on words spoken by footballers and them kissing the badge. Like when a player sign and say Man United is the best club in the world then everyone go oh he's a red through and through. feck off, what do you expect them to say anyway? "Oh I signed because Chelsea weren't interested and Arsenal offered me less money but hopefully Real or Barca might be interested in me later"

Basically it's just a job for most of these people and is there any one here that will not even consider if another company offer you a 250% raise? Or if you put yourself in Ronaldo's shoes, would you be happy United refuse to even consider giving you a pay raise while cnuts like Terry, Ballack are making as much or more than you?

Whatever the outcome, as long as SAF will have Ronaldo in the squad, I hope you guys will not turn on him. It isn't beneficial and since we're paying his wages, let's make full use of his talent. It's United first and foremost, always has been, always will be.

I know there's quite a few things i would do for £300.000 a week..

Ronaldo seems like a very stupid person to me.

Great footballer though.

Personally I am glad Ronaldo will now be staying and I hope all our fans get behind him, we want the best players playing for us and Ronaldo is definatley in that class.

However I have to take issue with you on some things. Roy Keane had less than 12 months left on his contract when he said he wanted a pay rise to sign a new contract, his comments were in the middle of contract neogotations. Ronaldo only signed one last year making him one of if not the top paid player in the league he has four years left, how can you possibly compare the two.

Secondly Wes Brown was also in the last year of his contract and just out of interest what did he actually say because as far as I remember he said nothing, he just turned down our contract offer and wanted a bit more money, something that is also common in contract negotations.

On to Beckham, not the angel he is portrayed at times, but we wanted to sell him, we wanted to get rid of him it was only fair he made the decision on the destination I can't see how that is ten times worse than signing a five year deal and then wanting out a year later when that deal makes you the highest paid player at the club and the club also meet the success expectations that top players have.

Onto Scholsey, Neville and Giggs. According to Ferguson Scholsey walks in for contract negotations with no agent and just said same again where to I sign, hardly the actions of someone who is driven by money, giggsy the same he could have gone to Italy clubs where queing up to sign him but he stayed. Neville is a massive fan of the club he his on record as saying this is the place for him and his ten years plus service show this to be true imo.

It sounds to me like you could be one of these that puts Ronaldo before Utd and there are a few on here, he has been a little bit stupid imo not has much as the papers have made out but he has gone a little far at times. Numerous times we have seen him say I don't know whether I am staying or not when you have four years plus you are staying end of. The slave comment came from a decent source if I recall and was far from forced. He knew exactly what he was saying. Now in terms of other players, lots of others would agree with him and even if he didn't want to leave he would probably have that view and he is entitled to that but it was very bad timing.

Real Madrid will continue their efforts to unsettle Ronaldo in a bid to prise him away from Manchester United amid claims that the transfer has entered its "final stages" and could be completed in August. (Spanish newspaper Marca, 1454 BST).

So we have now gone from July 7th to August.

It never fecking ends. For now we should just leave Real to waste their time worrying over it. There's a new season on the horizon for the club to concentrate on. But let's not start deluding ourselves into thinking Ronaldo is free from blame now it looks like he's staying at the club. We need to play hard to get. 50 goals this season or feck off! ;)

well said mate!

I think that thread got locked for a reason, probably the same reason this thread is going to get locked...

Good comment though

Eh? You must have just read a different pile of shite to the one I just did then :wenger:

United quite rightly refuse to give him a pay increase. We just gave him a hefty one a year ago. Should United demand we pay him £30grand less if he has a crap season? You get a pay increase if you commit yourself long term to the club. Ronaldo has shown the commitment means feck all to him this summer

Regarding the Blatter remarks he associated himself with, you defend him spuriously on the grounds that 1) he was probably tricked and 2) he's incredibly stupid because he wasn't educated properly as a youngster. Its a classic example of denial, you don't want to believe he said it, so you're making up pretty feeble excuses for him. He did say those words, he did agree with Blatter, and the comments were never retracted at a later date. Its clear you think he loves United, wants to stay here, and you think its an injustice he's not being paid gazzilion pounds a week. All of that is bullshit

Oh, and Beckham didn't want to go anywhere. The lad is United through and through. From the point where United decide they want to sell, its up to them to negotiate the best price with the buying club. Their failure to do so is not Beckham 'fecking us over'

It's United first and foremost for me mate. It's 'CR7' first and foremost for you

Something to do with heads and sand came to mind whilst reading that.

"Like many observers, I have grown tired of the way the issue has been talked around and Cristiano bears a big responsibility for that.

"It is only last summer he signed a five-year contract. He should say whether he will see it out - and if not, why not?"

Pally is absolutely correct.

I reckon he was wanting to say something much harsher, but seeing it was live TV he remained restrained in his choice of words.

most sensible thing i have read in this thread so far

Real Madrid will insist on Ronaldo transfer
57 minutes ago

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid will continue to try to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, Spanish media reported Saturday one day after United coach Sir Alex Ferguson said the Portuguese winger was staying put.
"I can say he'll be a Manchester United player next season. That's our stance. He won't be sold," Ferguson told a news conference in South Africa Friday where the side is on a pre-season tour.
The statement made the front pages of Spanish sports dailies AS and Marca which both remained sceptical and indicated that the transfer saga was not yet over.
Ferguson will hold talks again with Ronaldo at the end of July and at that point the 23-year-old player will re-state his desire to quit Manchester, where he is under contract until 2012, to join the Spanish champions, Marca said.
Ronaldo's transfer has entered its "final stages" and it could take place at the beginning of August even if it is complicated, added the newspaper which has insisted the player is joining Real over the past few months.
Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon meanwhile is convinced that Ferguson's statements are a "manoeuvre" intended to make Ronaldo's price rise, daily newspaper El Mundo reported.
Real is reportedly willing to pay 85 million euros (118 million US dollars) to sign Ronaldo, the Premiership's top scorer last season, and has already secured a 70-million-euro bank loan to carry out the operation.
Ronaldo, who has persistently spoken of how it would be a "dream" for him to play for Real, scored an impressive 42 goals last term as United won both the Premier League and Champions League.
He has infuriated United by continuing to express a desire to quit the European champions for Real Madrid since the end of last season.
Former England manager Terry Venables meanwhile accused the player of being "selfish" with his attempt to break his contract with Old Trafford.
"Ronaldo has four years left on a highly lucrative deal that he was overjoyed to sign 15 months ago," he wrote in his weekly column in British daily The Sun.
"What on earth gives him the right, now, to just throw it in the air and say 'I've had enough, I'm off'? It's selfish, it's immoral, it's potentially devastating for the game as a whole. It's wrong," he added.
Ronaldo signed a new five-year contract with Manchester in April 2007 after being linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
He joined the English side in August 2003 from Portuguese first division side Sporting Lisbon on a five-year contract which he extended by a further two years in November 2005.

Im with Brad on the people he highlighted but could not be bothered to do it myself. Absolutely ridiculous, Ronaldo is not thick and is not a child.
