Queiroz Wants No Part Of Ronaldo Circus
Carlos Queiroz refused to be drawn out on the Cristiano Ronaldo saga during his official unveiling as the new Portugal coach this afternoon.
Queiroz, 55, left his post as assistant at Manchester United last week and showed that his focus is solely on taking Portugal to the very top.
When a reporter asked whether he had any inside information on Ronaldo during his first press conference as Portugal boss, he replied: "When I talk with people, I don't comment on it in public. It is not elegant and it is ugly.
"I speak with my friends and with people who like me," Setanta Sports quoted him as saying.
"As a national team coach and being attached to the Portuguese Football Federation, we must not interfere with relations that are professional between our players and clubs.
"We should not even have an opinion about that.
Queiroz replaces Luiz Felipe Scolari at the helm of the Portugal national squad, who crashed out of Euro 2008 in the quarter-finals after losing to Germany.
"My immediate task is to analyse and reflect on what has already been done and the current situation," he added.
"After drawing conclusions we will define what measures need to be taken to achieve success.
"To the supporters I say: I'm here to serve the national team and to do what I think necessary. We need to win 12 points in the next three months. That is our focus."
"My challenge is to build on what has already been done to make further progress and reach the top."
As for Manchester United, with Queiroz now departed, the search is on for his replacement with a number of former players thought to be in the frame such as Brian McClair, Laurent Blanc and even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
