We'd all like to get £75-100 million for Ronaldo if he goes, I'm sure. But from their point of view, I cant see them needing to go above £50 million for him, if he comes around to their thinking and hands in a transfer request.
I do want us to keep him, because I believe that if he goes, Nani and Anderson will follow him in a few years, doing exactly the same things. Afterall, they mentioned when signing for us that part of the reason they came was to play with Ronaldo, and he seems an important influence on them. If they watch him say he wants to leave and then leave, they will just do the same thing eventually when they feel the lure of Madrid and Barcelona. Because whether we like it or not, these players dont grow up supporting Manchester United and dreaming of playing at Old Trafford.
And thats the cycle we'll be in, if we let him leave. Whoever Ronaldo's wing replacement may be, its hardly likely they'll be English. So when this foreigner who replaces him comes good and 2 years from now, Madrid and Barcelona come in for him, what will happen? The exact same thing.
As far as I'm concerned this is a double edged sword. Either we let Ronaldo go and effectively say:
"Even when we have the best player in the world. Even when we are the most successful club in the world this season. Even when we really, really wanted to keep our player. We had to sell them to Real Madrid because we couldnt keep him happy."
Or alternatively, the message that could come out of this may be :
"We can keep the best player in the world happy at the club. We will no longer allow Real Madrid's underhand tactics to work and force moves for our best players. We will sell them only when we want to sell them"
And that would bode extremely well for the future, when other foreign players are in similar situations.
