I've been reading the Spanish press a lot this past couple of weeks - surprise

In the early stages of this I had no doubt that we were going to see a new deal between United and Ronaldo that would make him top earner at the club (if not the world) tidy up the image rights issues and provide an anti-Webster/Bosman guarantee. When United announced (twice!) there were no negotiations underway I assumed they were being their usual cagey selves.

Unfortunately - because I love Ron - I think Madrid have upped the pressure (money, family) enough that he really is trying to decide whether to stay or go. I think even Mendes was surprised how far Madrid were willing to move(though how much from Madrid is smoke and mirrors and how much is cash remains to be seen) and there's now a standoff underway - one that United may be unwilling/unable to resolve, especially if Scolari and other people Ron trusts from outside the club are now saying that this is the time to make a choice rather than waiting a couple of years which I still think was Ron's intention.

I hate that it might end like this, because it's an ugly outcome to a great season and because:
Real Madrid = Wolf pack and Ronaldo = Prime Meat
and if he dares miss a penalty against Barcelona...

The whole Ronaldo transfer sage is blown out of proportion by the antics of Marca and Madrid. They toy with him, come out and say they want him but also say they're innocent and friends. The problem is, they pissed off United and United certainly wont negotiate with them, no matter what.
On the other side, there is the player. Would be a huge blow if he leaves, no doubt, on the other hand, no one is bigger than the club and we surely will move on, I have no doubt about that!

And if he really thinks, and that I somehow doubt, that at Real everything would be so much better and if he cant appreciate Old Trafford, the fans, Fergie and Quieroz, the football we play, the United players, then it really would be better to leave. But as I said, I doubt he thinks like that and I'm sure he stays. People shouldnt panic because Madrid and Marca antics

For me if he wants to go then so be it. We've bent over backwards for him and end of the day no one is bigger than Manchester United.

After all these years it will be perfect if he become a Red but if he's here just as a footballer for the wages and still gets his fecking head turned by our rivals then if he wanna go we should sell him.

Anyway if he asked to be sold and Real comes with 50-60 million pounds + Robinho + Ramos (maybe + de la Red ) then we should deal.

If Ron doesn't come out and say he's staying in the very near future I say sell the fecker.

Great news for Ferguson as Ronaldo says: I want to be legend like Best & Becks

Cristiano Ronaldo has given Manchester United fans and Sir Alex Ferguson a massive boost by admitting he wants to become an Old Trafford legend.

Since clinching a Premier League and Champions League Double this month the 23-year-old winger has plunged his future into uncertainty by appearing to indulge the advances of Real Madrid.

The overtures this week grew in such intensity United bosses took the unprecedented step of threatening to report the Spanish giants to world governing body FIFA.

Mirror Sport revealed this week that Sir Alex is set to fly to the Portugal training camp ahead of Euro 2008 for talks with the player.

But, speaking to Maxim magazine ahead of the tournament, Ronaldo revealed he wants to be revered by United fans like George Best and David Beckham.

He said: "Beckham is one of the club's greatest-ever players and it was a huge honour to be handed the (number seven) shirt. I just hope to carry on doing it justice for the manager and the fans. To be talked about like Becks and George Best would be amazing. But then why not if I carry on what I am doing?"

And while Real Madrid have done their level best to lure him to Spain, Ronaldo revealed his only plans for the Mediterranean involve his own hotel.

He said: "One of my ambitions is to build a hotel and resort in Madeira, where people could spend beautiful, and peaceful moments.

"The kind of time that I enjoy. It would be called CR7. After all this is the number of my life."

Ronaldo's penalty against Wigan in United's last game of the season took his tally to 41 goals, 31 of those in the Premier League.

The wideman then scored United's only goal in normal time in the Champions League Final to make it 42, falling short of Ruud Van Nistelrooy's tally of 44 goals in a season - in 2003 - by two goals.

But the Portuguese star believes he can improve even further under the tutelage of Ferguson.

He added: "You can never just relax and think that you have reached your best.

"You have to keep training hard, improving, learning new things. I am lucky to have great team-mates around me and a manager I can learn from - he is the best coach in the world."

While team-mate Wayne Rooney has come under fire from England boss Fabio Capello because of his short fuse, Ronaldo believes the World Cup controversy two years ago, in which he got Rooney sent off, has improved him as a winger.

He went on: "It was not very pleasant, but it did me some good. With this I grew wiser and it helped me to mature.

"Rooney is a good friend by whose side it is a pleasure and an honour to play.

"And I feel privileged British people have taken me to their hearts. The best thing about Britain is people are fair."

Good words from Ronnie, the only way he can become a legend at United is if he stays for the forseable future.

Sack Quieroz Sell Ronaldo lol

:boring: ZZZzzz...

Anyone else bored yet? Another day another amatuer news story in the Marca! Well that came as a suprise! Seriously bored of their feeble attempts now. Simple fact is for Ron to go he will need to hand in a transfer request SAF and United have already said they don't sell their best players. Realistic Ronaldo isn't going to shaft SAF.

So everyone take a deep breath enjoy the Euros, the transfer window will soon come around and close.

Even is the unthinkable happens so be it, he aint the the last great to come and go. I think the reported 100 euros or more will do nicely in signing players who will want to be here.

These magazines tend to do these interviews some time before they go to print and this suggests to me it was before the CL final.

I honestly think he will stay but if Real are throwing ridiculous offers at him you can't really blame him for giving it a second thought. You would hope that he would realise that the grass is not always greener though.

most people are such an easy target for the retarded media it's not even funny

actually it's kind of funny

Read the next line dude.

Real Madrid are given encouragement by Ronaldo, and his advisors for talking in riddles.

In simple English Ronaldo should convey any of the following messages:

I want to leave.

I want a pay rise, if United pay me more I stay.

I want to stay, and honour the contract I signed last year.

We move on with or without Ronaldo - subject closed.

The more I think about it the more I feel it's about money. I think every interview he does he says he will stay because he wants to but then remembers that his agent has told him to be coy and says he can't promise anything and to wait a couple of weeks.

I actually heard Ronaldo saying "I'm going to stay". That was during the celebrations.

Since then it's all paper talk and "quotes" from marca.

what to believe, what to believe...hmm....

It's hard for me to really care whether Ronaldo stays or not. I don't know about you lot but I've never been one for begging and praying that a footballer plays for United.

All the talk and games just bore me. If he wants to go, fine, but not until we get a fecking huge offer. The good thing about him having 4 years on his contract means we dictate the terms.

Agreed. Some people say that he's said nothing wrong, but what the feck is with all this "2 week" bullshit SECONDS AFTER we win the double. No matter which way you look at it, its extremely disrespectful to a club of our proportions that has REALLY guided him into becoming the best player in the world following that incident in 2006.

The fact that he even has to make a "decision" is baffling to me. But like you say we've got 4 years left on his contract so were right in the driving seat when it comes down to negotiations. The club always moves forwards no matter what, and a good example of that is when Cantona retired (imo one of the , if not the greatest united players ever) the following season we won..not 1 trophy...not 2 trophies..but a TREBLE.

If his heart is not in at anymore, then just let him go and lets get the £££. Believe me, we'll still be a major force with or without him.

Let's just send them a Ron look-a-like. They're stupid enugh to fall for that. Check out Calderon's encounter with 'Nicolas Cage':

This is it, in a nutshell.

But this seems to be cold comfort for a significant proportion of the caftards. They just want him to show them some love. Bless.

So what's with this two weeks shit then? He knows the whole world's watching him and he won't come out and say its bullshit.

You don't love people who have no respect for you.

Probably negotiating a new deal with United, can't exactly say "I'm staying regardless of what Gill offers." can he?

It's also why I wasn't bothered about any of it (other than in a "watch Marca wind themselves up into an explosion" sort of way) until I heard United (twice) say that they aren't negotiating and the Queiroz say that he hadn't spoken to Ron. Now we know the club sometimes tells fibs  and even the occasional porker - but if this time we really are taking a principled stand (on principle or precedents) and are relying on Madrid backing down rather than looking at Ron''s contract, then he really will have some thinking to do.

Incidentally, I'm not even convinced that Madrid can come up with the money, and it looks like some of the Real board, a lot of the fans and some of the playing staff would prefer it to fall through. In fact as soon as you move away from Giddyness Central (aka Marca) there's a lot of backpedaling and hedging of bets going on. Not a nice environment to move to. But I don't think United can bank on Ron seeing it that way when family and finances say differently - I think United will have to give him something (or not if they are as principled as some caftards would like to be!)

I'm sure you're right. You also have to remember that he's from a poor family in a small Madeiran village. A taxi driver took me from Funchal up to the famous Nun's Valley in 2005 and mentioned, as we drove by chance through Ronaldo's village, that he'd bought his father - a man with a history of drink problems - a bar, and mentioned how crazy that was in the eyes of the locals (where Ronaldo is of course celebrated, bringing fame to their small community). His father has, as we all know, since died, but I think it's easy to understand how his obvious concern to maximize the chance not only to do the best he can for himself, but also to discharge the responsibility which one so young clearly feels to do right by his extended family also, makes him think very carefully about such matters as his contract.

Like the very best of many things, be it art works or wine, the price commanded is far in excess of even slightly inferior examples from the same field. He has, clearly, added value to his own stock during the course of the twelve months which have elapsed since his five-year contract was agreed. It is therefore only natural and prudent that he makes every effort to bring his terms up to a level commensurate with his current status and therefore value.

I don't think any of us can be surprised that this is causing him some anxiety, and that his utterances, particularly from one whose English - and indeed Spanish - is not spoken as a native - are not always crystal clear.

Scolari urges Ron to join Real
Portugal boss warns winger he may miss his chance

Luiz Felipe Scolari has told Cristiano Ronaldo to make the most of the opportunities that come his way.

The Portugal boss is currently preparing his troops for a Euro 2008 assault, but has taken time out to urge his wing wizard to seriously consider any offer from Real Madrid.

Rumours persist that the Spanish giants are lining up a record-breaking summer move for the Manchester United superstar, despite the Red Devils' insistence that the player is not for sale.

Ronaldo has made no secret of his desire to turn out for Los Blancos at some stage of his career, and his international mentor has now warned him not to let the opening pass him by.

"I have told him that in football you cannot live on memories," Scolari said.

"You have to take the opportunities when they come along because they will not come again in your lifetime."

Dreams

While the news that their star player is being encouraged to leave Old Trafford will concern United supporters, Ronaldo's godfather Fernao Sousa believes that the winger has already set his heart on a move this summer.

"I believe Cristiano has taken a decision that he is going to Real Madrid, but he is not going to reveal it until after the European Championship," Sousa told the Daily Express.

"Cristiano knows that Madrid are a club to which you can never say no. History shows that you can lose the opportunity, and for that reason he is not going to say no to them.

"There are very few people who can say they have the capacity to make their lifelong dreams reality, but Cristiano is in this group of chosen people.

"Cristiano has always told me that his objectives in England were to win the Premier League and the Champions League.

"Now that he has done that, he has nothing left to prove. He knows he needs a new challenge.

"He feels his experience in Manchester has made him stronger. But above all, he knows that a train like Real does not come along every day and he would be stupid to miss it."

fecking hell Scolari, mind your own fecking business.

Queiroz is the key to keep Ronaldo, he knows about Madrid and seems to hate them. He'll tell Ronaldo all about their filthy etics and disgraceful president.

When you are the best player in the world at 23 it's not like "a club like Real" are only going to try and sign him once. That's obvious considering how they've been trying for ages.

Exactly. If he maintains his level they'll be after him every summer until he's 32.

Realistically, he's not going anywhere this summer, so it's probably best that nobody starts burning shirts just yet.

In the absolute worst case scenario, we will find ourselves in the position that Bayern found themselves, the summer before last, with Hargreaves. We will have a player on a long term contract who is desperate to move, a club willing to pay top dollar to sign him but we don't want to sell.

We all know how that turned out so I reckon Ronaldo will be a United player in 08/09, no matter what happens.

That's the worst case scenario. Chances are the reality is a little less bleak.

Some quotes in there from some well-respected figures. Obviously Scolari, which is surprising, considering he should recognise our success and not live on Madrid's memory, but hey. Maybe he's in line to get the Chelsea job and wants to make sure we don't have our best player to compete with him ;)

More worryingly is the quotes from his Godfather, but what does he really know? You think Ronaldo would be happy with his Godfather telling him what he probably told him in confidence? It seems to me he's either just making money out of this, stirring up trouble or desperate to seem important. Then again, Madrid arn't above this whole "let's tap us his family" thing.

Still, it's made me slightly more worried than I was when I woke up this morning. Thanks!

cnut. He needs to mind his own business. United are bigger. Ronaldo knows this current side can dominate Europe for the next 5 years. Real aren't within miles of this.

Ronaldo could end all the speculation if he wanted too.
