Queiroz: Madrid Lack Class
The Diario de Noticias asked Queiroz for his thoughts on the recent drama between Manchester United and Real Madrid over Cristiano Ronaldo, and were not left hanging for a response.
Following on from his recent allegations that the Spanish side were seeking to unsettle both United and the Portuguese national side over the winger, he offered a scathing indictment of the capital club.
He spluttered, "The current chairman of Real Madrid [Ramón Calderón] was my manager, and I know what he told me and what happens in the end. I have the advantage of knowing the differences between the two clubs [Madrid and United].
"In Madrid, our role was to serve as a kind of wrapping paper. We were to bring Figo, Ronaldo, Zidane to light. But they don't know what recognition and gratitude are there."
He added that there has still been no official approach from Madrid for Ronaldo, but stated that the media machine in the Spanish capital was causing problems.
"It's not hard to hold onto Ronaldo," he began. "Here at Manchester United we can offer pretty much the best conditions. But we can't compete in terms of ethics - because we won't abandon them. Nor is there the promiscuity between United and the English press that exists in Spain, Portugal or Italy.
"And no proposal ever came to Manchester United from Real Madrid. Never. Our patience has limits.
"Is Ronaldo pressing for an exit? That's something you'd need to ask him."
Domestic Concerns
Carlos also offered his thoughts on concerns back in Portugal.
"The national team? Portugal must always have the courage to reach a place of honour. That defines our attitude. After that, we can go on to try to be the best of the best. It doesn't always work out, but if we have that commitment, I feel proud," he said.
"My turning down club jobs? Portugal has excellent clubs, but the championship is what ruins it. I can't forget the incidents of 1995 that led me to get out of Portugal [the delay in disciplinary proceedings and re-arranged matches]."
