I guess that means he'll stay, if Fergie makes him that randy.

I like the Independent....lots of stuff in there. (including Feeding's quotes if he's interested :))

Scolari unable to halt talk of Ronaldo Real move

</EM>
By Steve Tongue and Ian Herbert in Geneva
Saturday, 7 June 2008

The English may be missing as Euro 2008 begins in Switzerland today, but the names of Manchester United and Chelsea continue to be heard. On the eve of his team's opening game here against Turkey, Portugal's coach Luiz Felipe Scolari found himself having to deny advising Cristiano Ronaldo to join Real Madrid, as well as refusing to rule out the possibility of becoming Chelsea's next manager. Meanwhile United were making plans to report Real to Fifa next week for what Sir Alex Ferguson has called their "intimidation" in attempting to lure Ronaldo to the Bernabeu.

By the time the tournament is over, Portugal's manager and star player may both regret not sorting out their respective futures before they came here. To the annoyance of the country's media officers, the twin subjects are raised at every conference like yesterday's. Scolari began at the Stade de Geneva yesterday with what sounded almost like a valedictory speech, thanking the Portuguese delegation and coaches and wishing them "all success in the future".
Asked about joining Chelsea, however, he would only say: "What's going to happen to me after the Euro, if I stay or go, concerns me and I'm not going to talk about it now. If I decide to stay or go, I will make a declaration after. I might sign again or I might leave. But I'm going to stay quiet. Euro, Euro, Euro, my life goes around that. I'm going to talk to my family and examine the possibilities, then I will decide. Ronaldo will say the same thing."
The former Brazil coach said he had no worries about Ronaldo's physical or emotional condition, despite the player himself having gone public on Thursday about his desire to join Madrid.
He told Julio Filho, a Madrid-based Brazilian journalist, in quotes published on the Terra website that he "would like to play for Real Madrid but only if it's true they are ready to pay what Manchester United ask of them." Filho – known to Ronaldo from several interviews for Brazilian television – made it clear yesterday that the player understood perfectly what he was saying.
"He wanted it to be published," Filho said. "He wanted it to be released. He knew the significance of what he was saying. What he said is exactly what is published. I don't know for sure if he was speaking with [his agent] Jorge Mendes' approval but I guess so."
Filho was unable to reveal where and for how long he met Ronaldo but he is known to Acaz Fellegger, Scolari's agent. One theory is that Scolari encouraged publication, in order to get the subject dealt with before Portugal's opening game, in Geneva today. If so, the plan was unsuccessful.
United's chief executive David Gill was understood to be apoplectic yesterday about suggestions that Ronaldo's comments represented a negotiating ploy, and it is quite clear that the player is going to have a make a transfer request if he wishes to leave. United warned last month that Real's "totally unacceptable" public attempts to unsettle the player were against all regulations, and the comment from Ramon Calderon, the president, yesterday that "it is an honour to know that a player like him thinks that playing at Real Madrid would be good" has pushed them into making an official complaint to the sport's governing body.
"I never told Cristiano Ronaldo to play for Real Madrid," Scolari said. "And if I had doubts about Ronaldo I wouldn't have selected him. He has been developing really well and I trust him as an athlete and as a human being. He will be the player he was at the last European Championship and the player he is at Manchester United."
At the Champions' League final in Moscow, scoring a fine headed goal and giving Chelsea's Michael Essien a difficult night, Ronaldo went some way to demonstrating that he does not necessarily shrink on the big occasion.
Now it is time to prove it at international level, where his record of 20 goals in 55 games includes only two against teams in the world's top ten. Portugal's golden generation of Luis Figo and the rest ultimately won as little as England's, wasting their best chance as hosts of the last European Championship, when they lost the final to Greece. In qualifying here they were unimpressive, finishing behind Poland and failing to beat any of their main rivals. One of the failings continues to be the lack of a world-class goalscorer and the captain, Nuno Gomes, who will front the attack today, does not come into that category. He too is placing great expectations on Ronaldo of whom he said yesterday: "I think he has the quality to be the man of the tournament."

My Kaka to United story has been picked up by the press. But any updates on the Ronaldo front?

Are people still acting gay about this?

Had a talk with my friend about this today. IF he does leave, shit happens. The club won 15 titles before he got there and will win more IF he leaves. This is Manchester United after all. I'm still counting on him staying though.

REAL MADRID are praying Cristiano Ronaldo will go on STRIKE as Manchester United declared war on the Spaniards.

Madrid were yesterday bragging that Ronaldo has already agreed to join them.

But United are convinced the 23-year-old is the victim of a Real dirty-tricks campaign and have offically reported the club to football’s governing body FIFA.

And, as the tug-of-war turns uglier by the minute, we can reveal the Spaniards are now hoping Ronaldo will refuse to play again for Alex Ferguson in a bid to force United to sell.

Madrid president Ramon Calderon insists Ronaldo wants to move and has already AGREED a staggering £12million-a-year deal.

He told a close pal: “We’ve tied things up with the kid. The only thing that remains is for him to convince Manchester to sell.”

The way Ronaldo will ‘convince’ United is by staging a one-man strike before the transfer window closes on August 31.

As SunSport revealed yesterday, Ronaldo was quoted on a Brazilian website admitting he wanted to join Real.

That left Calderon bragging: “It gives us great pride to know that a player like him thinks playing for Real Madrid would be good.

“We’re proud to know he would like to be with us.”

But United boss Ferguson has already said he would rather see Ronaldo rot in the reserves than go to their biggest rivals.

Former United legend Bryan Robson believes Ronaldo should forget about Real.

He said: “How did they do in the Champions League last year?

“Cristiano is on a massive contract at United so I don’t see any reason to move to Real.”

Saw that but decided not to post it. It is the Sun after all and we don't really want to let them wind us up, as they have a habit of doing.

Mind you, it's a good example compared to the Independent article above as to the difference between a tabloid and a professional newspaper.

This is my 1st and last post in this thread purely cos im blind drunk but i really hope Ronnie can see what he's part of and realise that we are genuinely on the crest of something special. Hiw could you leave us now when you know *** we could be a real proper legends. this is killing me we are so near to being the team Ive always dreamed about. Cmon Ronnie its there for you if you want it. Put us all out of our bastard misery and tell us ** staying.

"I stay"

Didn't really help though.

Various intriguing/fabricated bits from the Daily Mail

Cristiano Ronaldo risks blowing a £25million jackpot with sponsor Nike if he moves to Real Madrid this summer.

Sportsmail can reveal that Manchester United, who will report Real to FIFA next week for their public pursuit of Ronaldo, are working on a complicated image rights deal with the club's kit manufacturer for a 'CR7' range in an attempt to appease the winger.

Michael Jordan was the first high-profile name to make a fortune this way when he launched his range and Tiger Woods has a 10-year deal with Nike worth £50m.

United's non- executive director Bryan Glazer, who was closely involved with the deal for shirt sponsor AIG, is in negotiations with Nike over a contract that could be worth another £100,000 a week to the Portugal winger.

The contract is expected to run concurrent with his existing £120,000-a-week package at Old Trafford and will effectively top the £200,000 a week on offer at the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo, who has changed his signature simply to 'CR7', can market baseball caps, T-shirts and shorts around the world to capitalise on his growing status.

Nike, who already have an endorsement contract with Ronaldo, are keen to exploit his name but are reluctant to launch the range if he moves to 'an adidas club' such as Real.

Ah, right - the Nike factor finally gets a mention in the press! As comes up on here when we talk about United finances, Nike get the shirt sales money - not United. So if there is a major Ronaldo factor in our marketing revenue then Nike have a financial interest in this. Not that anybody will be buying a United - Ronaldo shirt at the moment

I wondered if they were comfortable about having their new advertising preference in an Adidas team (maybe even happy for him to be there as a thorn in Adidas' side). Interesting slant if they aren't. I wonder how long his Nike contract runs for?

Just seemed a rather stupid line to take, for Madrid and seeing as it is their claim [probably based on some idea floated by a security guard at the Bernabeu], The Sun.

Maybe Ronnie should treat it with the kind of answer it deserves, say yeah sure i'll go on strike, beginning...now, see i'm not playing for United.

If its all about money then the Nike factor may have a bearing in the long run.

I'm not sure if I want Ronaldo to score a hattrick so that his value gets inflated, or if I want him to suffer the humiliation of inexplicably starting to play like the white Eric Djemba-Djemba.

I wish him all the best. As they say in the theatre when going on the biggest stages..."Break a leg!"

We all have the pleasure of watching Ronnie play today.
Viva Ronaldo.
(excuse me while I throw up)

To tell you the truth i am probably more interested to see how Nani gets on. And for both him and Ronaldo i have the somewhat forlorn hope i imagine, that Scolari doesn't corrupt them too much. All that deprogramming when they get back to OT must be a pain for Sir Alex and Carlos.

But i digress.

Do we want him to do badly in the Euros so Real lose interest, or do we want him to do well so we still get a lot of money for him? Or alternately being outshone by some unknown that Real effectively direct their attention towards, thus we keep our boy Ronaldo?

O Cristiano...

You're loved here...
You're adulated here...
You're idolized here...
Your song is the one that makes The Theatre of Dreams and other stadia vibrate the most...
You've got a coach who loves you to death...
You've got team-mates who want to lay their lives on the pitch for you (Anderson) here...
You've won everything of significance here...
You've developed beyond any measure in your game, attitude and temperament here...
You've got the Rooney's, the Rio's, the Vidic's, the Evra's of the world to make your team here...
You've got the playing spirits of George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham to watch over you here...
O Cristiano... This is the Theatre of Dreams...
O Crisitiano,
Please don't go... :(

It's a personal thing I guess. I know I won't be jumping up if he scores. I also know I'll be calling him cnut right through the game. But I'll admire his football if he's in any state to play it.

Deprogramming? I'm picturing something akin to that scene in Clockwork Orange where that blokes eyes are held open and he's forced to watch loads of unpalatable images of Nazis and suchlike. Only in this case it'd be close-up pictures of Ruud Van Nistelrooy's face over the soundtrack to The Omen.

I hope he plays as good as humanly possible. If he's determined to go, then we want to get as much as possible for him. And I really can't see Real Madrid completely dropping their interest him over a bad championship, while I can certainly see the price rising if he's the player of the tournament.

He almost certainly won't be going this Summer since United don't need to sell this early into his current contract and he's not the type to strike if we don't.

A poor tournament on the other hand will put him back in his place a bit.

Nike didnt seem to care that much when Fat Ronaldo went from Inter(Nike) to Real(adidas) back in 2002 right after winning the wc and being the top goalscorer. He was their major campaign vehicle back then, and he was prob. more famous and def. more liked(outside OT) than cristiano ronaldo.

I am not sure whether someone has posted this idea.
There could be a solution to the Ronaldo saga.
I suggest that United can come to an agreement with Real and Ronaldo. since Real wants him so badly and Ronaldo wants to play for them, impose a transfer fee which can discourage and encourage at the same time. The scheme should be :
If Real to get Ronnie next season, transfer fee should be 300m.
with each year pass, a discount of 50m.
2008-2009 - 300m.
2009-2010 - 250m.
2010-2011 - 200m
2011-2012 - 150m
2012-end of contract or season - 100m.
This will discourage Real to get him early and encourage Ronaldo with the idea that he is the most valuable player in the world and if Real can affold him, they can have him with those prices.
United can delay loosing him and if really Real wants to pay 300M, United can buy some of the rest of the 'best" players and also, with the balance, they can "refinance" their debts.
if real cannot afford, then we get Ronnie to stay and can tell him that actually Real's talk but never walk. It was reported that Real can recoup 0.5b with Ronaldo there.

I know a lot of us dislike Ronaldo over what's going on...but let's do our best to keep him here.

Sounds daft I know, but is there some form of online petition or something we could all sign which asks Ronaldo to stay at United - if we got lots of comments, signatures, etc. and the club got wind of it, Ronaldo might get to see it and be inclined to stay?

I know it sounds a bit strange, but why not try it?

Anyone know anything or could set one up?
