All-Ireland Championships '09

I've missed a few of the football matches this year but read back over the thread and caught up. Not been to a Dublin football game yet this summer but stopped off at Dublin Wexford in the hurling. Was very impressed with the Dubs and a little disappointed by the Wexford lads. We seem to be developing a good young side who really put it up to the Cats. In the football Tyrone look clear favourites and the standard in Leinster is atrocious. Other provinces need to up the standard to get near Ulster.

Aye, Dublin certainly are improving & it can only be better for the game if there are more Counties that will compete each year. Kilkenny or Cork folk wont like me saying that though :)

To be honest, I dont think other provinces are that far behind Ulster - if at all. Tyrone are clearly ahead of most Counties - thus far, but there's a long way to go yet so alot can happen. The one thing we wanted this year was to retain Sam, we failed miserably for one reason or another in the past, but the difference now, is that we've had less injury's (touch wood) than in previous years after winning Sam & we've blooded upwards of 60 players over the past two years - so everyone of them are raring to go!

Antrim's story is fantastic & a romantic one. I wish them the best of luck in the final & in the Championship. Its hotting up nicely now that the qualifiers are kicking into shape & this is do or die time this weekend - its gonna be a great weekend of Gealic football - hopefully at its finest

What - that he had a falling out with Mickey Harte? +

Dublin media bollox if thats what you're saying. I met Stevie in the restaurant of the Glenavon Hotel, Cookstown one Saturday afternoon, about April last year, he was with his missus so i didnt want to annoy him too much.

He told me he couldnt contemplate playing County football if he wasnt able to play club football, nor could he train for club & County, as his knee & leg problems were plaquing him, so the best thing to do was to step down from the County panel & just focus on Clann na nGael & maybe if he he's able for it - he'd love to come back to the panel!

Stevie was telling fibs, lets just say you should never go into business with your county manager

Stevie was selling Crack for Mickey - it all makes perfect sense now!

Very sad day for Westmeath Football. I think we have come full circle. It all started at senior level at the turn of this decade when we should have beaten a good Meath team in a replay and then Dessie Dolan missed a sitter of a free under the Bar in a packed Croker.

Last Night Meath thumped us and killed that team for good. We have not won a 70 min match all season. Only Beating Wicklow in Extra Time. I hope we can pick ourselves up, but morale looks to be at its lowest in years.

Good luck to Kildare & Dublin today, we really need to see a good Leinster Final.

that was a great game today, lots of excitement and nice and close to the very end of the game

What has happened to Westmeath, they really have collapsed.Great weekend for football and that is not just because of the Derry result.Derry and Dublin won their respective games playing Football and not just trying to stop the other team from playing and it was a joy to watch, two of the best games for manys a year all in one weekend.Credit to the defeated oppositions who both contributed greatly to these games and were unlucky to lose.

I was there today, best game we've won in years. Usually we lose games that need that sort of steel. We have shown loads of skill this last 5 years but lacked balls, today we we're brilliant. Cullen and Whelan needed to be on fomr in that second half and were. Special mention for Bernard Brogan, cool as feck in front of goal.

Great year so far for Dublin in both codes.

Totally, never thought I see both teams in Leinster finals. The hurlers have a bit left in them too. Could be a huge year for them.

The football looks to be warming up for a great August and September.

All the investment in the youth setup for hurling is great to see come to fruition and Daly looks a good manager. The footballers got a bit of a shakeup with what looks like a good management team in Gilroy (and whelan the silent partner) is getting the most out of a team that really has underachieved in the last few years when they emerge from Leinster. Still I wont start going mad on the football front as I dont think we've faced a stern test as yet. I know kildare had a man advantage for most of the final but I still dont rate them as a good side.

Good post Stick - very balanced views mate

Not meaning to annoy anyone on here from Dublin, but I have to say something because i'm gettin flash backs to last year & it did my head in!

There's a few dubs about, gettin carried away again. One game doesnt make a contender. You were poor - average up to this point, then one win against Kildare & the champagnes on ice. The Evening herald has alot to answer for aswell as your own players, in hyping this team up.

You surprised me on Sunday - i tipped Kildare to win & if the game was played in Kildare, i'd confidently say that they would of won!

Anyway, best of luck to both Dublin & Kildare... its starting to hot up now. Roll on Sunday at Clones

No probs!..... The odd time I do post there, I use the name "Monaghan Exile"

Well done to Derry, They'll have to be put into the contenders pot now!

Man there's some amount of twats on there eh?

Did you see that arsehole from Tyrone: "Dellboy...." something, that slagged me for being a fair-weather supporter because I wasnt sure where the O'Duffy Terrace was - behind the goal or at the sides!

Thats fecking typical arseholeness on there & its the reason why I've only posted twice!

Come on now RHD,it wouldnt be the same without you.Need you on here as well so I can keep you going now that we are going to win the all Ireland. It it amazing what a win can do:lol:

Glad you've cheered up. You were making me depressed ffs

Derry does that to you builds you up just to let you down they were a shambles and to be quite honest I felt they had no chance against Monaghan.Things have been sour for a few weeks now,one petty situation after another mainly due to club baggage being carried into the county setup. The Bradley situation brought things to a head and seems to have had a "clear the air effect".Lets just hope that they can now concentrate on playing football and improving our game.Moderate confidence has been renewed

Thats good

I c'ant believe Donegal beat Derry, Donegal are obviously not as poor as I thought!........ Threrfore, maybe Antrim are'nt too bad either!... BEWARE of the SAFFRONS, TYRONE!

I hope today's Ulster Final shuts a few our critics up. Monaghan v Derry last week, certainly did so!

Even though I'm A Monaghan man, I've always followed the Galway Hurlers. A great win for them against Cork. If they can get as far as to meet the Cats in the final, I would really fancy them!

fecking useless Down cünts!! Excuse my language!

91 and 94 seem so long ago........

Studied Tyrone yesterday.

That team is just perfection. Everything they did was administered to perfection. Only team that might stop them is one who is physical and in their face from the off.

The only team I can see doing this are Cork so. A Cork vs Tyrone final. That Kavanagh chap is some player. Fantastic display from midfield.

I was at the match yesterday & pretty happy about the result. 6 pts win & both sets of fans were happy enough. Really great buzz at Clones, fans mingling & having the craic!

Big respect to the Saffrons - both the team & the fans, they played their part in a very entertaining game for all in the stadium & then the pubs afterwards. Great day out for everyone it seems, well apart for one poor girl who got puked on in the Terrace. Some girl just walked past her & then she through up all down the back of her top, everyone around there was very respectful & helpful to her - I thought that was pretty cool, as there's a tendency to wet yourself at something like that!

I thought Tyrone played with alot of maturity & confidence & I am very pleased about how far we've come these past 10 years or so. Alot of wasted talent over the years had resulted in us under-achieving on a national stage, there was a massive drinking culture & lack of preparation for big games. Now, thats all changed & Mickey Harte has transformed rough diamonds into a bunch of talented & determined band of brothers.

There are no individuals in that team, they play for each other & are a very mentally strong/prepared group of men & pretty spiritual aswell, praying together before games & training sessions!

There's still a long way to go yet, but the signs are that Tyrone have many gears to go up whenever they need to, so confidence is high & their feet are firmly on the ground. Interesting to hear the perfectionist Mickey Harte sayin we didnt play that well, but had some good passages of play. I'd agree with that, but I thought Antrim gave us a game & respect must go to them!

Some lovely scores & our movement was excellent at times, some wonderful passes - particularly from Dooher - spraying balls around like Scholesy :)

Bittuva shock to hear Donegal won, I thought Derry would have been to strong for them but congrats & condolences go to them in equal measure!

Didnt think Down would of got beaten mate, you had the chances to kill them off in injury time but didnt take them. I thought some the players technique was poor, constantly losing control of the ball solo-running etc.. - many condolences & I hope you's pick yourselves up soon enough :(

Congrats to a dogged Wicklow, they kept at it & again Micko is the master - what a legend of a man & football genius

I'd agree with that Baz

You cant let Tyrone loose or they'll be off sprintin, you need to stay with them & pressure them right to the last minute.

Its easier said than done though, Ulster football is all about the pressing game so Tyrone can play many styles to carve out victories - including a strong physical one. There's no wimps in that team & they seem to alot more mature this year than last year. They're an improved team with total focus on retaining Sam - it wont be easy but the players believe they can & thats what you want from your players

Would I be right is saying the present Tyrone team was very successful at underage/minor levels? Ive a memory of them winning alot about 5-6 years ago.

Oh and it must be the first time youve ever agreed with Baz ;)

Alright man whats the craic!

Yeah, there's about 6 or seven of them that came through Minor & Under-21 together & winning the All-Irelands aswell. Mickey Harte was their manager too, so many of this group have been around for a long time now man.

Mickey managed the Minors (1991-1998) and then the Under 21's. He guided the Under 21's to two All-Ireland Under 21 titles and three Ulster Under 21 titles. He led the Minors to an All-Ireland Minor title and three Ulster Minor titles. He won the All-Ireland Senior in his first year in charge aswell. He's a legend in our parts!

Baz's post was a nice touch

I'd agree with that Baz

:

When I say I studied that team I meant it.

More then just watched it - I looked at everything they did off the ball when they had it. Everyone of the team were comfortable on the ball and aware of team mates around them Something that cannot be thought over night. Many's a time Dooher or Cavanagh had the ball and turned inwards - with a player running up beside them. They didn't even have to look fr him - They just did a simple handpass and they were away. Pure pure brillance. Never seen anything like it.

When Antrim had the ball they just put pressure on them with the Half Forward and Half Back lines and Antrim just grumbled with a bad ball. James Loughrey must have turned over 5-6 Antrim posession with poor ball.

For someone to do anything against the Tyrone tam - They would have to change their game. Dublin don't have it, Cork may have the midfield and half back line, Kerry don't have it - Forget about the Connaught teams. Dare I say it - Only team which I think may compete against Tyrone is a Meath team. Meath have about 5-6 big physcal players who could cause them trouble.
