All-Ireland Championships '09

That Kilkenny Galway match was absolutely class. It should be a handy enough final anyway for the Cats against the Dubs.

The general consensus down here is that he was one of our best players over the two games and their right. He was our best player in the first game and was our most productive when at half forward in the second. If you say his heart isn't in it I'd love to know what you'd say about 90% of the rest of the team! I usually agree with ya RHD but I dunno wat games you were watching, no one's more critical of the players down here than the Kerry public but Kennelly's one of probably only 3 players to have come outta the Cork games with any credit and deservedly so.

Alright mate, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree

Although, anyone i've talked to (a fair few Kingdomites aswell) agree's that Kennelly's nothing special. You's were poor in both games, and many of your players didnt turn up - i didnt see anything from Kennelly that made me think "Wow - what a player..", and as much a twat Galvin is - he a far better player than Kennelly, if only he'd lose all the shite that he brings with him!

Did you see the team?Would probably make more sense to take the dog out for a walk than waste time and money going to Casement but will go out of Loyalty.Suppose you saw where Derry County board have come down heavy on Ballinderry regarding the Kielt incident, apparently alot of Ballinderry people none too happy that McGuckian is lining out tomorrow, just what we need at this stage. You will have no trouble recognising me tomorrow I wll be the one crying my eyes out at the end of the match after our undoubted hammering, anyhow have a good day and the best of luck in the Ulster final

 funny post but sorry to hear that you'd given up any hope of winning this game!

Yeah i heard there's been rumblings within Ballinderry as regards the Conway incident, but thats been denied by said parties, maybe thats not exactly accurate though

I didnt make the game after all man. Me & the missus went to Oasis @ Slane on Saturday & had the most horrid time gettin back to Dublin. We walked 10km+ from the gig & spent the guts of 3hrs+ trying to find a bus home. It was a fecking nightmare. I got sick at the side of the road aswell, fully dehydrated as there was a severe lack of water to be bought. We got home about 3am, both of us were fecked, sick, annoyed & I also lost my wallet somewhere between the taxi from City Centre to Smithfield - stupid gobshite i am, but i'm blaming that on Dublin Bus

As regards to the game, a win is a win & although it wasnt pretty - we were effective & our system of cover & movement is working very well. Few players didnt have their better games - Seany particularly, but he's a legend for us & it shows that gone are the days when we were a one-man team with Peter... now we have other players that can take the games by the scruff of the neck & grind it out. I thought Hughes played well for large chunks of the game, and hopefully he'll continue to improve & get back to his fantastic levels of 2003. The squad looks in fine form & mood to battle for Sam once again!

You's were pretty physical yesterday, the game plan from Cassidy's point of view was that you couldnt match us for quality so lets try & ruff them up - just the same way you did to Monaghan - but it didnt work then so i'm baffled why the hardmen of Derry reckon they can bully our seasoned boys

Hopefully yer man will get done for his headbutt on Super Dooher - fecking disgrace, and then he feigns injury laying on the ground holding his face(soccer style) so the ref wouldnt book or send him off. Ref didnt buy that crap & duly booked the fecker!

Derry, when you's have all your players back - will be a tough opponent in the Qualifiers & no-one will fancy playing ya's, but you's will have to get your act together pretty soon, there's far too much negativity coming out of Derry football at the moment & it will affect the County teams chances no doubt!

As for Brolly gettin Doherty & Mullan off with only 4week bans - you lucky feckers :D And hopefully you'll stop complaining that Derry get a hard deal & Tyrone get it easy. You only have to look at our suspensions over the past while & most recently Ricey gettin an ban extension after he appealed because the CCCC thought Tyrone were being cheeky in appealing!

Anyway, i'm over that now - thank God, its bad craic having negativity looming large & much better to be able to enjoy whats great about our game!

Good luck in the Qualifiers - you's will be hard to beat with a full team & Southern teams will dread gettin drawn against ya's

Comprehensive win for the Red Hands. Derry lacked that cutting edge that they normally have up front. Credit to the Tyrone back line who kept them very quiet through out. The only bad news for Tyrone was the injuries to both McMahon and O' Neill.

I thought so too, wasnt pretty but Job-done!

The team is built on hardwork & movement & yesterday showed that the boys are in the mood to win every game without panicing, changing game plans without losing shape. As I said, it wasnt pretty but we're in the final which is where we wanted to be regardless of what folk think. We dont want to play the extra games that come with the Qualifiers - we want less so we can give more, and thats whats gonna happen!

Good luck to Antrim & Cavan on Saturday, i'm looking forward to that game as I do with all Ulster games, but its great for both Counties to be in with a chance of making the final. I'd say its finely balanced

Lightweight! :D

Turned our exactly as predicted by myself this match was long over before it began.Sad thing about yesterday was after 25 yrs or more of being at Tyrone/Derry matchs was the first time I got bad manners at a Gaelic match for asking a Tyrone man not use bad language in front of my 12 year old and I mean bad language, only made him worse and I finished up trying to stop him fighting with Ballinderry men who he decided to insult, got a kick for my troubles.

Yeah I heard it was pretty good. The Dubs got a handy side of the draw, they wouldnt of fancied playing Galway or Kilkenny at this stage, but congrats to them gettin to the final - first time in 18 years!

Lightweight! :D

I know man - gettin old though and in the immortal words of Officer Murtagh - "i'm too old for this shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.." :D

You wanna check out Boards.ie as regards to the trouble at Slane: Transport & scraps - its unreal man. I've never seen so much negativity regarding a gig like Slane is getting. Most are saying they'll never go back!

Sorry to hear you got in a bitta strife man, some amount of dickheads around it has to be said. Probably better off saying feck all in the future, never know what those type of twats are capable of!

Anyone watching the Galway v Sligo match? It is pure drivel. 0-10 - 0-9 in favour of Galway at the moment. It is awful stuff.

Westmeath are fecking awful

Dublin aint good either but its just that Westmeath are that bad

TV3 commentary is woeful too

Westmeath were absolutely atrocious.

I don't think Dublin are capable of defending. They always seem to be all over the place. They'll be sliced open by a good side.

Well done to Antrim..... I was in Clones in 1970 as a 10 yr. old it was my 2nd Ulster final, the first being '68 in Casement, Down v Cavan. Oddly enough I can still remember both occassions, the atmosphere, the crowds, traffic jams etc. more so than actual games.
No doubt about it Antrim will have 31 counties behind them, RHD & co. will surely understand this!

While I'm at it, while there is a lot of negative talk about Ulster football from OUTSIDE the province, I've been to several Connacht finals, a few Leinster & Munster Football finals. The
atmosphere in Clones town & at the games are way ahead of the rest. Probably what helps is that the pitch is a short walk from town centre, pubs etc.

ps; Before the Hurling fraternity start, I am not comparing the much celebrated Munster Hurling final, as I've never been, it is said to be brilliant. Some day I'll get there!

Alright NC, yeah it was a shit game. Very surprised about the Galway team, I fancied them to do well this year - i know its still early days, but their League form was very promising!

They beat London 1-18 to 1-07 & London arent much use & narrowly beat Sligo by 4pts 1-13 to 0-12. They seem to have problems in defence at the moment & teams such as Sligo will put it up to them & it seems to work, although they have still got over the finish line - thats the important thing I suppose!

Good win for Antrim yesterday.

Yeah delighted for them man. Its great to see the Underdog contesting a final instead of the usual Counties in Ulster. Had high hopes for Fermanagh last year - who've never won an Ulster Provincial title before, much the same as Wicklow have never won a Leinster title before, but unfortunately it wasnt too be!

Yeah Westmeath was terrible, they cant even do the basics - like pass the fecking ball to their own man from a few yards away!

Hats off to the Dubs though. They were ruthless & regardless of how bad Westmeath were - they still scored some really great points & goals. You can only beat whats in front of ya, so Dublin deserve great credit for putting Westmeath to the slaughter & giving the fans a great day out in the Sun. I'm know if it was my own County - i'd be delighted with that performance but wouldnt be gettin carried away!

I didnt realise you were that age man - nothing wrong with it either though :)+

Thats a good story regarding your presence at the Ulster final in 1970 - the last time Antrim were there. Are you gonna try to make the trip to Clones this time man?

Ohhh damn right i'd expect the 31 Counties to be cheering Antrim - i'd be cheering them aswell if they werent playing us. It should be a great day out for all & its great to see a young team like the Saffrons progressing as they have. Its great for Antrim & Belfast Gaelic Football aswell

Nice touch giving Ulster football a pat on the back, the standard across the country has been poor but again Ulster seem to get it thicker than most. The shittest games i've seen this year have been in equal measure throughout the land, but the Derry-Monaghan game seems to have given pundits & fans ammunition to shit on us. Tyrone havent exactly been that poor either & we're not even having to get out of 2nd gear yet!

Never say never, however these days, I tend to just follow Monaghan games whenever I can, also the bigger games within 40-50 mile radius of Galway(where I now live).
I will miss Mon V Armagh on Sat., as I'm working, but will catch it live in the boozer.
ps; while it's lovely to see Antrim in final, I cannot see them touching Tyrone!... & yes, I kown the old adages, "nothing to lose" etc., ..... still, Tyrone by 5 or 6 pts.!

Yeah great win for Antrim only live a mile from the Antrim border and they are still celebrating. The Antrim people will have torn loyalities in the Ulster Final as they traditionally are big Tyrone supporters. They however have zero chance of winning the final,Tyrone could field their Ladies team and win.As for Westmeath there collapse is even worse than our own and like ourselves played with no hunger or spirit, sad

Paddy Bradley quits the Derry panel

Derry football has been rocked by the news that ace marksman Paddy Bradley has quit the panel ahead of Saturday's qualifier against Monaghan.

Bradley made his decision known to the Oak Leaf supremo, Damien Cassidy after a practice match on Sunday.

It is still not known why the player has walked away, but it may have something to do with the county's failure to make an impact in this year's Ulster championship. Despite getting to the Division 1 League final against Kerry, Derry made a disappointing provincial exit at the hands of Tyrone on 21 June.

In an interview last January, Bradley said that he was expecting Derry to 'achieve big things this year' under new manager Cassidy.

Maybe he's afraid of the Farney men. Still tho - thats a shock & a half

Dublin put up a great fight against Kilkenny but they never really stood a chance.

Yeah they did well & are progressing nicely. I dont mean to sound disrespectful but I still find it hard to take Dublin seriously in Hurling due to the success of the footballers, its a bit strange tbh, but fair play to them.

Shame the County's not gettin behind them, instead of just supporting their illustrious footballers or big-time Charlies!

Stevie O'Neills some man

Stephen O'Neill is to put his honeymoon on hold so he can play for Tyrone in the Ulster SFC final on Sunday week.

The former Allstar gets married this week to fiancée, but the newlyweds will be staying at home until after the All-Ireland champions complete their bid to retain the Sam Maguire Cup.

'There'll be no honeymoon, maybe we'll get away at Christmas for a few days,' said O'Neill.

The Red Hands take on Antrim in the provincial decider on 19 July at Clones.

These lads take their football very serious eh - I wonder what his missus makes of this. She's a gem if she's cool with it though, I cant imagine a woman not wanting a honeymoon straight away, but there's obviously more important things in the world - like winning Sam :D

Similar thing happened last year with Brian Dooher. He was gettin married aswell, but also decided to have a operation so he would be fit or somewhere near fit for the Championship. He was hobbling around on cruches for his Wedding & Honeymoon - not ideal for the bid day!

Alrght CL, whats the craic mate!

I dont think the final will be that straight forward, I of course fancy us to win but it wont be easy. Antrim have a taste for the big time now & fair fecks to them!

Antrim people having split loyalties & are traditionally Tyrone supporters - never heard that one

Westmeath = :lol:

Derry - Farney's

All-Ireland SFC Qualifiers Round Two

Down v Laois

Monaghan v Derry

Longford v Kerry

Wexford v Roscommon

Tipperary v Sligo

Donegal v Clare

Westmeath v Meath

Wicklow v Cavan

(Games to be played on Saturday, 11 July)

What rotten luck for both teams. They were probably praying to avoid each other, but God's obviously gotta sense of humour!

They'll have to be on their best behaviour - dont fancy the chances of that being a straight-forward game though!

Also Westmeath - Meath's an interesting one, should be a easy win for Meath but Westmeath cant be any worse than against the Dubs last week. fecking disgrace to their County & management!

I like the look of Longford & Kerry game, that should be another interesting encounter!

Hard luck to Limerick, who i thought were fantastic. Really surprised how good they were & no-one's gonna relish playing thoses lads. Good luck tho!

Fair play to Dublin, great performance against Kilkenny, bound to give them believe for the future. Alot of young players there that hopefully Daly can bring through.

I seen first hand the huge amount of work going on at underage level at local clubs, great to see finally starting to show results at intercounty level rather than just underage.

Is that the same Stephen Oneill who walked out on you for a while last year?

Any of ye read the forums in Hoganstand or even contribute? Can be quite interesting !........ Monaghan in particular & Ulster football are getting some pasting!

Monaghan v Derry again!....woow!....... with all due respect to CL & PJ, I really want us to beat ye. I am still annoyed by comments from a certain "Celebrity Barrister" a few weeks ago!

Quite honestly you should win easily,Derry county football is in a mess and there were will be very few Derry fans make the trip on Saturday. Why we have so many players who have no pride in wearing their county jersey is a disgrace.Best of luck in the remaining qualifiers,we are better out of it so our clubs can continue with their petty behaviour

Jesus man - you're bitter with twisted knickers

Stevie O'Neills an absolute gent, it broke his heart to retire from County football but he missed playing with his brothers. The Tyrone team is one big family!

He wasnt capable of playing Club & County football (due to his knee) & he still isnt - hence him missing the whole of this years National League campaign bar the opener against Dublin in Crokers!

The medical team reckon they can manage his knee alot better now that he had a good rest last year & its Tyrone's gain & the Country's nightmare :p

Yeah i go on to that shite quite a bit & yeah there's a real anti-monaghan agenda on there - especially from bitter Derry fans!

Some amount of muppets on that, man you should do yourself a favour & stay clear as it'll only do your head in. I'm sick of reading comments about how poor Ulster football is & this anti-Northern/Ulster agenda they seem to have. We get it with both barrels but i've refrained from registering!

Dont be surprised by comments alluding to Northerners/Ulster people being second-class Irish either!

Superb man & you were very close to an upset, just a combination of loss of concentration & Kilkenny going up a gear - goals make prizes!

As you said - Dublin underage level is regarded as the most developed in the Country & its showing dividends now!

I'm not trying to degrade your comments nor the County's progress, but what also must be said is there's a helluva lot more money flying around at every level of Gaa in Dublin than anywhere in the Country. The facilities in Dublin are unmatched anywhere!

Also, Dublin has coaches from all over the Country (Kilkenny, Cork, Tipperary, Clare etc..) at local level, that are using their knowledge of their own County's hurling excellence & Dublins feeling the benefits of that!

You only have to look at the Senior team set up to see how Dublin is utilising insider knowledge from other Counties. Appointing Anthony Daly - a Clare man, is a very shrewd move by the County board, and this was not just a surprise appointment. Dublin were after Nicky English before they got him!

Dublin's being very progressive & next year or the year after they will run Kilkenny even closer again. The only problem with that is - other teams will have improved considerably aswell & its fair to say that within 2/3 years we will most likely have a 6+ horse race for the Liam McCarthy cup!

I dont disagree that he isnt a gent,he taught for a year in Bellaghy and was very popular. Now as for his dodgy knees being the reason he dropped off the Tyrone panel last year, you sure?Thats not what I heard

What - that he had a falling out with Mickey Harte? +

Dublin media bollox if thats what you're saying. I met Stevie in the restaurant of the Glenavon Hotel, Cookstown one Saturday afternoon, about April last year, he was with his missus so i didnt want to annoy him too much.

He told me he couldnt contemplate playing County football if he wasnt able to play club football, nor could he train for club & County, as his knee & leg problems were plaquing him, so the best thing to do was to step down from the County panel & just focus on Clann na nGael & maybe if he he's able for it - he'd love to come back to the panel!

I've missed a few of the football matches this year but read back over the thread and caught up. Not been to a Dublin football game yet this summer but stopped off at Dublin Wexford in the hurling. Was very impressed with the Dubs and a little disappointed by the Wexford lads. We seem to be developing a good young side who really put it up to the Cats. In the football Tyrone look clear favourites and the standard in Leinster is atrocious. Other provinces need to up the standard to get near Ulster.
