Alexis Sanchez | Signed for Arsenal

No way was Robben/Gudjohsen back then better than today's Nasri, Dzeko/Negredo might not be better than Drogba but Aguero definitely is. Yaya is also comfortably better than Essien.

Dunno, Essien was an absolute force back then. Think he actually edges it if you ask me.

Ah yes, Back to Sanchez. He's a brilliant acquisition for the Gooners, he will give them something different and inject instant quality into the starting 11. Arsenal seem to be finally shopping in the higher end of the market with their recent 2 big money signings. Debuchy will also improve their starting 11 as well, If they bag a world class striker then their attack is as good as any.

Maybe Sanchez will be converted into a striker? I doubt it though.

Unless you think that football has significantly improved, otherwise it is pretty much constant. You mentioned a few players. But lets see:

During those years EPL has Drogba, Lampard, Essien, Terry, Cech, Carvalho, Cole, Rio, Vidic, Evra, VDS, Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney, Henry, Fabregas, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Torres as world class players. Look now, at best you'll have Suarez (who is leaving), RVP (when fit), De Gea, Aguero, Yaya and at a big push Silva, Mata, Ozil and Rooney as world class players. Also, most of those I mentioned (at-least half of them) would have been on top 20 players in the world (many in top 10). Now only Suarez, Yaya, Aguero and RVP (when fit) are in that category. During those times EPL had a Ballon D'Or winner and a few others who made the top 3 (Lampard, Gerrard, Torres) but now there is no player who have made top 3 on a few years and only Suarez may come near it.

So, English teams fail in Europe, players in England aren't as good as they were on that time. How then it results with a better league than back then?

I am talking about the league as a whole, not simply the top 4 teams and you haven't appeared to grasp what I am saying. Are we falling behind the top tier teams in Europe? Absolutely. The Spanish and latterly the Germans have been teaching us footballing lessons for years. That does not mean the EPL has not improved as a whole.

The Chelsea side of 05-06 would have mauled this current City side. So would the United side of 06-09. feck, even Arsenal of 07-08 with Fabregas in the center would give this City side a good game.

Haven't really been following this one. But this is pretty much done? Would be a fantastic signing for Arsenal even if it doesn't really solve their issues.

Of course we'd have been interested to get him here, although maybe we were put off by something like having so many wideplayers to try and fit into the team on top of Mata, Rooney and RVP. Still, we could have been more proactive moving a few off the books and gone for the quality player thats available and would improve the team.

Having another big signing will also alleviate the pressure on Ozil. Still need a striker to compete with Giroud and a CM for Arteta, but its looking pretty good elsewhere.

Their biggest issue last season was that when Walcott was gone they had nobody who was direct and who offered natural width with their pace and dribbling ability. Sanchez solved their biggest issue from last season so they will be very interesting this year, even if like you say they have more weaknesses to deal with.

Giroud still looks so out of place in their line-up which is otherwise really impressive.

Great purchase for them, you can easily see him being a pivotal player for them for the next few years, I'm just glad Liverpool were not able to get him..
As much as I'd like him here, I have to keep reminding myself he would further push Januzaj down the pecking order, and I really want him to get games develop.

Didn't Wenger convert Henry from winger into one of the best striker around? Maybe Wenger is planning to do this to Sanchez.

Really gutted Arsenal gets him, if true. I'd sell any of our strikers to make room for him. Although I don't understand of why he'd join Arsenal, which really doesn't guarantee him much trophy. Unless he was told that Arsenal will spend big this season.

Yeh, I tend to feel little annoyance when top players are signed for any club. It's good to have them in the league.

I detect sarcasm in this post. WTH people can think that rivals signing top players are good news.

I don't get where he'll play for Arsenal. Through the middle, up front? Is he displacing Walcott wide right? He typically hasn't played on the left for barcelona, although I'm sure he's capable. Seems a signing where you buy the player because he's quality and not because he's what you need.

Because footballs about entertainment and competition, not just your wins column.

So you are glad if your rival teams signing excellent players, and reducing your chance to win trophies?

Excellent signing for Arsenal I am disappointed we werent in for him I really rate him. They got him for relatively cheap too!

Looks like a quality signing for a very good price.

I can't believe we aren't in for him!

People said the same after Ozil last season...

We can't be interested in every damn player this season. Good signing for Arsenal.

I wouldn't worry about all this wild speculation if I was a Liverpool fan. Big Phil Thompson said it was in the bag, that's good enough for me.

Well its possible that CL football is a must for him, and its very possible we have someone else in mind.

(Could also be that van Gaal doesn't quite fancy him, as outrageous of a suggestion that may seem).

I just don't think we are in for him, it could be down to two things that we want Di Maria rather than him, which would make me happier because last season whenever i watched madrid, he was always one of their best players and better in big matches than Ronaldo even. Secondly Van Gaal might have a plan to accomodate Kagawa, Mata, Adnan and probably Valencia, and he rates them all.

Shaw wasn't bought to replace Vidic and Buttner. :wenger:

And who cares if Herrera hasn't represented his country yet ? And what does he have to do with Giggs, who barely played last year ?

We've made the ultimate transfer by bringing in a world class manager, who will be far more influential than any player we can sign. If you add to that the fact that we are probably going to buy several more players, it renders your post a bit meaningless.

We are still going to need a CB a CM and a wide player, he is a world class manager, but LVG still needs to ship out guys who are handicapping united's squad. We do not want to be carrying passengers like your ashley youngs and the andersons

How many Andersons do we have?

So if Arsenal signs Sanchez, and we don't sign anyone, that would be quite a disgrace like, starting the season with Valencia again.

We don't know how LVG will line up the team yet.

Also don't just pick the least popular player to make it sound terrible...remove Valencia and say Januzaj (sounds better already)

Great signing for Arsenal, he is a terrific attacking asset. The fact that he chose them over Liverpool makes it even sweeter.

I think Januzaj could have a place, but we got 2 wingers remember, and I dont think Mata will be placed on the wing, so no new winger, plus Januzaj is Valencia on the other wing I think.

For all we know we may be playing 3-5-2 next year, and with the only attacking spots being the 2 forwards of the AMC role, we have plenty of options already.

He's a great player but we need to strengthen in other areas first, it's just the wrong timing for him.

Anyway he will be excellent at Arsenal. Better than going to pool.

If they add Remy too then along with Walcott and Sanchez their frontline will have some scary pace.

No but we should be interested in world class wingers. Suggests to me there isnt enough left in the pot as the media made out. A CB and perhaps another CM and thats it for this window.

Or maybe we're already trying to sign another world class winger?

Seems odd that we're not doing all we can to sign this guy. Genuine world class player becomes available and we do nothing. What makes it worse is that he goes to a rival already better than us.

What?

So much stuttering from Arsenal

2m add ons, why not just pay the full fee he is world class.

Makes me think why don't we just go in there and bid 45m offer him silly wages and be done. No messing about.

It's definitely strange all right.

Only things I can think of was that LvG made it clear he's not his type of player.

Another factor could be the 'No CL' thing. A lot of reports were saying that was necessary for Sanchez.
