Alexis Sanchez | Signed for Arsenal

I've become increasingly convinced over the years that Tony Barrett and the other Liverpool based Times writers just write exactly what the club briefs and never say anything negative about the club out of fear of the supporters.

It isn't just Tony Barrett and the Times that are reporting this (I'd also completely disagree regarding Barrett).

It's been reported for weeks that he prefers a move to the PL and everyone in the media except the Times are reporting his preferred option is Arsenal.

Bit of an exaggeration, but let's just see what happens. :D

We will see what happens. I'd be very surprised if he went to Anfield. I always think these part-swap deals are very rare because few players want to be seen as the pawn in an exchange of queens.

Such a small bid in reality. I guess Barcelona still owe us some cashmoney from the Fabregas deal?

If that's the amount that Barca is only look for, it would be criminal for us to not bid for him.

Having said that, I think Valencia's contract renewal probably means that we are not looking at Sanchez.
I don't think you can draw many conclusions from that. He's a reliable squad player and would be good cover for RW and RB. It also means we won't lose him for free or on the cheap due to running his contract down. Nothing about granting him a new contract suggests he's first choice and I think we would buy Alexis if we could as atm he's infinitely better than anyone else we have in that position.

You cannot possibly compare Valencia with Sanchez.

How am I comparing Valencia with Sanchez? Of course I would love it if we were to sign Sanchez. I'm just stating rationally that if we are prepared to give Valencia a 3 yr contract, it might be that we are not looking to strengthen that side of the team.

And also to keep my inner muppet under control.

You need a squad, not just a first eleven. He's also versatile - he can cover rioght back, especially if Van Gaal uses three at the back and wing backs.

And just because he got a new deal doesnt mean he's integral. Look at Nani - simply meanms you can get a decent fee for him if he moves on.

I'd be surprised if Valencia figured in van Gaal's plans as anything other than a squad player.

Imagine a scenario where we aren't signing any wingers, which isn't that far off. 4 wingers if we include Januzaj, now imagine Nani gets injured, which isn't that far off either. Now Januzaj on the left wing and Valencia on the right wing could be our regular starters.

And if not: Ashley Young!

What happens to Mata in this scenario? Because I imagine Mata, Rooney and van Persie will play.

Nani will leave.

I think Mata is pretty wasted on the wing, but so is Rooney of course, you think he'll play Rooney ahead of him at #10 in a 4-2-3-1?

Somehow the best formations for our squad seem to be the ones without proper wingers.

They'll play next to each other in a 4231 with a traditional winger on the right IMO.

Hopefully it won't be Valencia.
Valencia or Young seem the most realistic if you don't count Januzaj as traditional winger.

I don't buy all the transfer talk until it happens, we're just euphoric because of the 2 signings.

You'd have to applaud Arsenal for getting him for that cheap.

My overall understanding is Liverpool want Sanchez and Barca would also like him to go to Anfield, only the man himself wants to go to Arsenal. Think Wenger will land his man but surely Barca will get more out of them.

No way will his fees be less than 35m. They can bid 20m for Sanchez all they want but they won't get him at this price.

The only issue I have is the one where you think surely Liverpool aren't going to do a Spurs and sell their best player, facilitating a move for one of the buying club's best players to us.

Do you think you'll go for Sanchez on top of a striker or will it be just Sanchez?

Also all the media chatter seems to suggest Liverpool are demanding him, and they have leverage. Sanchez supposedly wants to come to us.

I cant see how Liverpol have any "leverage". He'll go where he wants, not where Barca want him to go.

God know.

We've got a distinguished track record in not completing all the deals we need to.

That said, I think most top managers have identified that great strikers aren't exactly to be found in abundance at the moment and are identifying different ways to play.

I think if you get Sanchez he'd work perfectly as a forward.

Did they lose out with Mata? Can't imagine they were in for him with Ozil and Cazorla.

Sorry, I was referring to when he signed for Chelsea, Reportedly, Arsenal had all but signed Mata but he was dithering over the fee, not willing to spend an extra few million. Chelsea came in and signed.
