No-one's suggesting United are going to slide into mid-table oblivion.

The issues in your squad might take more than a year to resolve, and you'll be hoping regaining top four can be an instant part of that. I'm arguing that the competition in the league at this moment is such that no-one should be over-confident and that the mere appointment of LVG is not a guarantee at all.
He'll get the best out of RVP though, so we'll go back to being a one man team again, and that one man won us a title the season before, right?

It probably could have got top four but the achievement of Ferguson to get that side to a league title is still something that baffles me. The contribution of RVP was immense and when he got injured last year, it was game over.

Yes, after all, the man is arguably greatest manager in the history of the game. My point is, one year outside the CL, mainly due to a poor manger isn't the end of the world and I doubt it would stop big players from joining us. If we show top money, like every other big team does, we'll attract top players.

If he goes to Arsenal he'll finish 4th every season and get beaten by Barca in the first knock-out round of the Champions League every year.

If he comes here, he's got a realistic chance of winning the league and the CL within the next 3 or 4 years.

United haven't won the CL since 08, have subsequently lost arguably the best manager and player in the world in that period, are not in the CL this season, and yet have a realistic chance of winning both the league and the CL in the next 3 years?

I mean, they might do. It's hardly likely though.

You're a bit weird.
What's weird about pointing out that when he was injured last season you told us all he was actually unhappy. Now he was injured. You can't even decide for yourself whether he was injured or not.

Also, there's nothing weird about pointing out that he was injury free for two seasons out of the last three.

How many times have Arsenal won it since 08?

Sanchez is a world class player but Wenger isn't known for splashing much money in one transfer window. Don't know if they wouldn't be better of with signing a world class striker and signing a good prospect on the wings like Depay.

Don't know why Arsenal still gets so much disrespect after last season. Look what the Carling Cup 2006 did for us and our players. They have a great core to build around and I wouldn't be suprised if Ramsey wins player of the year next season. Guy was on a total different level in midfield before his injury.
Not that similar, we'd gone one season without winning something. It basically kept us ticking over till we could mount a proper title challenge again. All this talking about the top 4 as if it's our main goal now is odd - we target the title and expect top four as a product of that.

Only 1 team can win the CL each season. We've had further realistic chances since 2008 and will again do so again in the next 3 or 4 years. Our current transfer policy supports the fact that we're not going to be satisfied by being stuck in a perpetual 5 year plan. Plus, LvG has enough of a track record in Europe for me to believe he can make us challengers given our resources. The rest of Europe will be thinking the same.

If you run down Chelsea/City's squads, they're currently a long distance from United's. It's going to have to be a hell of a transfer window.
Which is why we'll probably be throwing money at the likes of Sanchez. Van Gaal will be aiming to close out his career as he began it - winning the european cup. We just spent £30m on a left back, feck knows what we're willing to spend on a top winger/midfielder in his prime.

In the 2005 - 06 season Manchester United did not win even one game in the champions league, they crashed out of the group stages bottom of their group.

Two seasons later they were champions of Europe.

I would say the poster who suggested in the next four seasons that Manchester United have a realistic chance of winning one league title and one champions league title made a fair point.

Furthermore when we put what he said into context it was regarding Arsenal, he suggested as far as the next 3 or 4 seasons are concerned, Arsenal will probably be challenging for fourth place but United for the league and champions league.

This once more is not unreasonable when we look at Arsenal's history and Manchester United's history. One team has shown consistent specialisation in failure and the other a specialisation as comeback kings.

Specialization in failure? FFS there are some numpties around here thesedays.

I don't know what else you could call Arsenal's last 8 years or so other than a remarkable string of failures. Not only on the pitch but off it too, in terms of losing star players due to badly managed contracts and failing to land any top targets (Higuain, Draxler, Benzema & Di Maria, Suarez, Bernard, Luis Gustavo (?), Jovetic etc) until Ozil.

From a managerial perspective Mourinho was definitely justified in saying what he said, even if it was incredibly brash.

The situation won't change under Wenger imo, he's been a spent force for years. This could be the season we finally see them drop out the top four and Wenger sacked.

The meltdown potential with this transfer is brilliant. Whatever happens, theres going to be some fantastic over-reactions.

I fully expect us to close another three big signings and leapfrog Are and Liverpool to make a tight run for the PL title with the only other two serious threats.

A squad in decline?

I know Moyes was a disaster and the club did well to cut ties as quickly as they did, but he wasn't the only reason for the collapse. It was a team ready to self-destruct at any moment.
Nope, the squad had its deficiences but it wasn't and still isn't the 7th best squad in the league at all. With the addition of Herrera and Shaw as well as one of the best managers in the world we are in a much better position now too. Hell, we have Mata, van Persie and Rooney in our front 3/4 - if you don't think that's quality you are out of your mind.

If Sanchez is to leave Barca i can only see 2 clubs he would choose -
Juventus - Maybe he really loved the Italian culture and would love to live there again
United - Joining a club that can only go in 1 direction after last season, exciting times - an apparent United fan as a child.
New manager, New players, New ambitions. Highly likely to be back in the CL next year.

Teams i dont believe he will join

Liverpool - OK they got CL football this year but are on the verge of selling the main reason they qualified for the competition to Barca. A team built around an aging Gerrard who will be finished in a year or 2. A team that possibly wont qualify for the CL again next season without Suarez.

Arsenal - Highly unlikely to mount a serious title challenge for the duration of a season. A club that when they are in with a shout of winning the league and need to buy a striker - loan an old, injured, Swedish has been midfielder. Ambitions of finishing 4th every year but nothing more.

If it's between United, Liverpool and Arsenal I'd be fairly confident. We'd be able to offer the highest wages as well :D Arsenal have other positions in need of more strengthening so I can't imagine them getting involved in a bidding war but Wenger can still be persuasive.

Not sure it would - either they use Sanchez and money for Suarez or sell Sanchez and add that in to the bid for Suarez.

Either way Liverpool get top value.

Indeed.

Doesn't make any difference to Barca either. Even if they need to sell Sanchez to fund the move they'll get a good price for him and it seems Suarez is nailed on to go to Barca anyway.

Arsene Wenger can work magic with French and Spaish, not so sure about Chilean.

... Just getting on the blower now to tell Wenger not to bother then as SiRed from redcafe says we're out of the running

Thanks Mate

Whilst you have him on could you ask him if he has any sleeping bag style coats for sale. Im expecting a cold Autumn and whilst keeping warm i would very much like to carry my laptop in an unuauslly large pocket of my coat.

he said he's all out, but suggests looking at 'onesies,' apparently they're all the rage thesedays

No chance Sanchez goes to Liverpool.

Liverpool have already spent, what £40m on Can, Lallana and Lambert.

Suarez money would have to go on signing 3/4 players to increase squad size for Champions League. Weak defence, and could do with more depth throughout the squad.

We'll have more than £40m to spend and we also have other players to sell. We need depth, but we shouldn't and the signs are we won't, sacrifice quality to have it.

Who are you selling out of curiosity?

Who have you got to sell that will raise any money. Selling players lowers the squad number, something you'll need to increase if you are seriously wanting to re-stablish yourselves as one of the top top clubs in England.

That's an excellent question btw, who they can really sell apart Suarez? Not that we are in a better situation
