Alexis Sanchez | Signed for Arsenal

Think he ends up at Arsenal. The thing is I think if we went head to head with Arsenal we'd land him. But because we need to strengthen other areas, we probably have a certain amount that we'd be willing to spend on him and in that case Arsenal will beat us financially and get him.

Same could be said for us - a CF, CM, RB and backup GK are more important than a Sanchez type ATM. Potentially a CB too depending on what happens with Vermaelen. Not sure our budget can cover all those positions.

Having said that I'd absolutely love it if Sanchez signed. I daresay it would mean no CF though.

Sanchez and Walcott to cover the goals of a top quality CF :nervous:

True, but I could see Wenger going the cheap route for a RB and backup keeper and breaking the bank on Sanchez.

Similar situation to Ozil. You guys didn't desperately need Ozil, but when opportunity strikes to land a top class player you go for it because the likelihood of Arsenal landing players of that ilk are typically slim because of the competition from other clubs that typically happen when these players are available.

So if he ends up at Arsenal I guess the plan is play him as the central striker? Or would he take Walcott's place in the team?

I wonder could Arsenal pick up Ochoa, I guess he wants guaranteed first spot, and high wages. Ochoa, Aurier, Sanchez, that'd be a fine window.

Any direct sources to that? Not long ago they made this official statement:

The Chilean forward has been the subject of continuing rumours that he will not be part of new Barcelona coach Luis Enrique's plans for next season.

However, Barca have gone public to end the speculation and warn clubs to not bother enquiring about his availability during the close-season.

"Alexis is not a Barcelona player who is on the market," the Catalan club's president Josep Maria Bartomeu announced.

"He has a contract with us and that is the only thing that counts. He has had an excellent season for us.

"Obviously, he is part of our plans for next season. We have always wanted him here and he is a highly valued player at this club."

Juventus are reported to have made a formal enquiry about Sanchez, but Bartomeu insisted that they have not had any contact with the Serie A champions.

"We do not know anything about the interest from Juventus," he continued.

"Nothing official has reached us. For that you would have to speak to the player's agent.

"I read so many things these days about the summer transfer market; there are so many stories that I think it is best not to comment at all."

I very much doubt there is a direct source, just what's been floating around.

Personally I think Barca would be mad to let Sanchez go, but things seem to work a bit different in Spain.

I've seen more madness from Real than Barca, but this idea that they need a major overhaul seems pretty silly.

But then they got rid of Cesc and so it seems no one is safe, he was supposed to be the Prodigal Son.

Vidal, but both would see us challenging for the league. If we got one i'd be ecstatic, but both? I'd have a hand party the like of which has never been seen before.

I agree I would probably take Wilshere out of your list, not really a soft touch just not that good but will at least put up a fight. koscielny always comes across as a bit hit and miss in crucial games when he should really be a leader at the back for them.

He's been hardly their weak link for the past couple seasons.

Barca are idiots if they really want to get rid off Sanchez.

If they sign this racist cannibal I am not going to "support" them as long as he is there which is a shame as I mostly wanted them to win if it was between them and that mob from Madrid! Poor Iniesta, hopefully he won't receive a bite from that cannibal! Hope their decline continues if he joins them!!

Some of it is from fans of a club who have managed to finish at the dizzying heights of 6th, 8th and 7th in 3 out of the last 4 years, bottled a title challenge with 3 games to go last season and have only won a solitary Carling Cup (on penalties to a championship side) in the past 8 years.

Didn't realise that. Pretty shit when you think about it.

Yep! I'm the same. I might even take Woody's initiative and unlock my own warchest and buy a fleshlight.

There's a trophy and £100m extra in the bank, to be fair.
Wenger still need's to prove he has the balls to spend that cash though.

Should have spent that money on a class striker last year.

You allegedly had plenty to spend back then as well.

You're still stuck with the same manager who thinks loaning Kim Kallstrom will reinforce a title challenge and who will no doubt end up considering Joel Campbell just the player you needed up front after all - With added snootiness that unlike others he didn't even need to go sign someone this summer to strengthen his strikeforce.

Your best hope of proper signings is losing your first few games and hoping that his panic buys this year will come the top shelf.

I'm not saying recruitment has been perfect. I'm more critical than most.

The reality is that we're far wealthier now and the players we're looking to sign are generally much better. People say we finish 4th every year, which is true, but we were 8 points off top last year compared to 20 off the year before. It's chalk and cheese.

Time will tell on that point. Ozil was top class but Flamini, Kallstrom and Sanogo defiitely weren't. You've always been after top players, you just very rarely get them and aren't prepared to spend over the odds, which is usually what is required. Ozil is an exception to that but you'll need a couple more to prove the above point. That's especially true given that no other club declared interest in Ozil at the time so Arsenal didn't get competed out like they often do.

Sure, but no side signs endless top players. We've only been at that end of the market for one summer. This summer is huge for us. We need a Sanchez type to demonstrate our renewed power once more, as you say.

Last summer was a bit of a cock-up, in all honesty. Ozil was great but the rest of it was a lesson in incompetence.

Fair enough. This'll be a huge signing for whoever pulls it off.

Wenger made a mistake by splashing 40m on Ozil in the hope of getting a world class player.

He should have used those funds for bringing in a top striker.

If we let Arsenal or Chelsea or anyone else get Alexis without at least trying to lure him here will actually make me :( I might have to lock my GF in the kitchen

Said the same thing about Cesc did they not?

I think its there way of beefing up the price a little.

If they came out and said ''yeah, we dont like him, he will not be part of our future'' then they leave themselves open to smaller bids than what they will get if they give other clubs the impression that they need him.

Erm, we should be challenging for the league regardless...

Should? Yes, but would we? Realistically, after losing Rio, Vidic and Giggs plus Carrick losing form and our wings still being dire? Hard to imagine, especially looking at how strong City look and how well Chelsea have bought.

The only chance our current squad has of challenging Chelsea and Man City is a Van Gaal miracle, which isn't absolutely out of the question considering Netherlands current run with a very average team.

Football wouldn't be pretty mind.

Yeah, I honestly think our squad is underrated/underperformed miserably last season. With the 2 new signings we've already made I expect us to be up there competing for the title. We may not be favourites, but we should be up there...

Well, the same way one manager with an ineffective 'system' can turn champions into a shower of shit, a competent manager with a strong squad and a couple of additions can get them performing at the level they should be. I don't think it requires a miracle at all. Also, I think that our young CBs are ready to step up and prove themselves as top performers this season. They just need to be shown a little faith/patience...
