Alexis Sanchez | Signed for Arsenal

Our wide players contain Nani, Valencia and Young. He would be a colossal improvement on our options.

As I said before, given that the three of our four attacking players who pick themselves are RVP, Mata and Rooney; it's Januzaj, Kagawa and Welbeck he would be competing with for a spot. Not to mention those you listed, plus Zaha, Lawrence, Powell, Lingard, etc.

I highly doubt we will use traditional wingers under Van Gaal. At least not to the extent we have in the past.

Totally agree. I keep posting about it - most posters ignore that we have quite few options on wings, some of them young Zaha/januzaj/Lawrance (if no loan) then we have to give play time to Welbeck/Kagawa.. Even if we totally leave out the likes of young/Nani.. We still have decent group of players. They are not world class but they can put a shift for the team. My guess is we won't go for Sanchez, instead we will make a big bid to sign Pogba and a top CB.

This is where United are going wrong though. Last year, and to some extent, the year before that, our wing play was dreadful, and we are a team all about wing play.

For the left, I'd play Januzaj as my starter
For the right, if we got him, I'd play Sanchez

If it came to it, I would happily sell Young, Kagawa and Nani, although I'd like to see Nani have one last chance under Van Gaal
Zaha right now I don't think is good enough, another loan maybe. Lawrence on loan as well.

Rooney can switch up RVP or Mata so will get plenty of game time. Welbeck? Well, I like the kid, but what can we do, we can't keep everybody, and he also doesn't want to play on the wing
Putting square pegs in round holes is a reason we have been as poor as we have been

They do happen in the premier league. The last one that included two superstars was maybe Eto'o and Ibra? I might be missing someone. Reliable journalists are also saying it's a possibility. Usually it's the Mail or the Star that reports these type of deals.

Journalists seem to live to propagate these "swap" deals but the reality is they practically never happen.

Liverpool losing Suarez and signing a replacement in return seems nice and neat but it ignores the fact that he will have his pick of clubs.

With respect to Liverpool whilst they are not totally reliant on Suarez, losing him will be a massive step back. To me, with CL football to play next year the jury is out whether they can maintain their progress.

He might prove me wrong and jump at the chance but he will get bigger offers from clubs he might think are a better bet.

Sanchez is a class act and would walk into the side. If that puts others nosed out if joint, hard luck.

There are a number if players who aren't good enough and others who can't get in the side in their natural position and end up being crowbarred in elsewhere and not being up to the task. Those players should be moved on.

No. Sanchez would be completely unnecessary. He would make us marginally better, but the money would be better spent elsewhere. Anything he adds to the attack we'd lose in having no defensive support.

Not entirely sure you are serious.. he would improve us a hell of a lot, he is better than ANY potential winger we deploy on the right.

Our attack would be better, but who would help out defensively? Van Persie? Nope. Mata? Nope. Sanchez? Nope. Rooney would do the lions share because no one else would do a thing, marginalizing him even further after he is shunted wide. There has to be balance in the team.

Have you watched Chile at all? Sanchez puts in a cracking shift with his pressing and chasing back.

Did you not see Sanchez yesterday? His work rate was amazing.. I think you are now just trying to come up with any excuse.

Sanchez has played through the middle for Chile though. Where does he play for Juve? If he were to come to United, you'd think it'd be to play off the flank; is he as effective out wide?

Firstly he plays for Barcelona.. secondly he plays out wide for them and had a very good season (his best yet) for them last year in a largely disappointing season for Barcelona.

What am I missing?

It's ridiculous that football supporters still read it.

He usually plays out wide for Barcelona whenever I've seen him.

He's best as a hybrid forward/winger in a wide position, essentially exactly what we need. I think we'd benefit massively from a wide forward given that most teams have one or two nowadays.

Yes, but I've also seen him play for Barcelona. I think that is a more fair assessment of what he would offer United. Any player is going to go above and beyond for their country in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

How do you know he wasn't told by the Barcelona manager to focus on attack and leave the defensive players to defend? I think he'd be a terrific signing for us, the type of signing that wouldn't just see us as top 4 contenders but for league challengers as well.

Is that not because he is given a different role with Barca than he is given with Chile?

True and what I noticed in the first half of the season is that Neymar's strongest position will eventually also be centrally in Messi's position. So having 3 players who probably excel centrally isn't going to work and at least Neymar is a better goalscorer. As a player though, I've grown to love Sanchez who largely frustrated during his first 2 seasons. Everyone loves his workrate

I think it'll be Pedro or Sanchez out, at the minimum

Thanks for the correction - epic fail from me. It's Juventus that he always gets linked to.

I was under the impression he played as the false 9 for Barca - shows how little of non-PL football I watch these days.

Even so, playing wide for Barca is a different notion to wide for United - it's a more lateral role.

And wouldn't you know it, the role he had with Barca is far more likely to be the role he would have at United.

He is a great player, I just think for the fees mentioned, we would be wise to spend elsewhere.

Quality player but there's nothing to suggest Barca would sell him or that he wants to leave.

When it comes to newspapers, I tend to read them all (online) without prejudice. You're falling in to the trap they set when you start to say, "I like this paper", because that's when you start taking what they report as gospel. I just take each story on its merits and decide if it's bollocks or not from there.

Can't say I ever bother with The Sun, primarily because it's behind a paywall now, same as The Times.

All that said, I fully appreciate why you bear a grudge against the paper. Understandable.

That's fair enough mate. I'm sure LVG will be considering his best use of the money available.

Cool. No response is necessary.

Its when I try to work Sanchez in to any prospective line-up next season that I realise that Nani, Young and Valencia best start packing their bags now.

We should go all in on this one. He and Januzaj would ruin full backs across this league. A front four of he, Mata, Januzaj and Van Persie strikes one as very balanced, with a little bit of everything in the mix.

Would love Sanchez but if we got him we'd really need to start selling players.

If we signed him we'd have 12 players in the squad to cover 4 first team "front/wide" roles, in a squad without Europe and a manager who's not a big fan of rotation. Massively bloated.

RVP
Rooney
Mata
Sanchez

Hernandez
Kagawa
Nani
Januzaj

Welbeck
Lingard
Valencia
Young

Wilson
Zaha
Lawrence
Powell

IMO,

SELL:
Nani, Young, Kagawa, Hernandez

LOAN:
Lawrence, Zaha, Powell, Lingard

Van Persie
(Rooney)

Januzaj - Mata - Sanchez
(Nani - Rooney - Valencia)
Thats how it would go for me. It it means selling some players, so be it.

I expect that Young, Hernandez and possibly Nani and Zaha will be sold. Lingard could also leave, if not a Premier League loan would be wise. Likewise with Powell and perhaps Wilson.

Van Persie, Mata, Rooney, Welbeck, Kagawa, Januzaj, Valencia and Sanchez would be rather awesome going forward. I also wouldn't be surprised if Valencia was cover at right back. That's enough.

For a team with no CL, that's still an awful lot of players. What's more concerning is that 5/8 of those players still would prefer playing centrally, if not 6. It's an impressive roster but LVG will need to find a good system to get the best out of them.

Even if we are interested in Sanchez it will come after we acquire a CB and another CM at least. If we do get the other chosen targets for those positions then a last ditch Sanchez bid will be launched if at all. This looks the least to be done in my opinion. Not because we wouldn't be interested but simply there are other priorities. Have a hunch he may end up in Arsenal.

Would be happy if we just fixed centre back and midfield this Summer. Let LVG look at our forward line, clear the deadwood in Jan and add to it next Summer. Very big ask to get the squad completely sorted in his first window. Sorting the essentials (LB, CM,CB) first would be a brilliant first step.
