Alexander Büttner

Judging by his appearance, he looks like a Liverpoolesque signing.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong when he eventually signs, but somehow I don't like the idea of this transfer. This fella isn't even highly rated by Dutch supporters and 2 years ago he was being linked with the likes of Legia Warsaw. I do realise it's just for backup but I would imagine there must be better options available for around the price.

Indeed he was looked at by Lech Poznan and Legia Warsaw but they decided not to buy him. Vitesse's asking price was €400k and it was in February 2011 so a year and a half ago.

Since when are Holland massively short of left backs? Drenthe and Willems are in with a shout too.

BTW Isnt Drenthe free? Howcome we didnt take a punt on him?

When did you last see Drenthe?

He's also a winger, not a left back. A poor defender.

Only seen Willems in the Euro's where he was one of the worst players of the tournament.

He went from being one of the most exiting young prospects to the worst player in the tournament all in the space of two of three games. He's obviously a very talented young lad, just had a bit of a nightmare tournament. Along with a lot of more established Dutch stars.

I hadn't heard of him before or seen him in any other game so his so-called qualities are news to me. He must have something about him to have made the starting line-up but I don't know if he is really any good or if van Marwijk made a mistake by picking him and playing him.

I'm obviously not gonna start calling him shit, I can only say specifically that he was shit in that tournament.

Alexander Buttner has on Monday flown to England to undergo a medical at Manchester United ahead of a £3.9million move to Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old Vitesse Arnhem left-back was wanted by the likes of Southampton, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers earlier this summer - but now United have made their move and are ready to seal a €5million deal.

Buttner has already declared the move a dream, and as he left Schipol Airport in Amsterdam for Manchester, he admits things were still sinking in.

"If a week ago, you told me that together with Robin van Persie I would be playing at Manchester United, I would have driven you straight to the mad house," he said.

"One month ago Manchester United sent an email expressing their interest, but in the last four days it became concrete.

"I have not spoken yet with Sir Alex Ferguson, but if all goes well that will happen."

Buttner has been in dispute with Vitesse Arnhem over his future and has been training away from the first-team squad.

"With not being allowed to train with the first-team and the arbitration case against Vitesse, this was not a nice time so I see this as a reward," he added.

so he was rated at 400k just over a year ago, and i read somewhere that his supposed move to Southampton just a few weeks earlier was for about half the fee that we are going to pay.

we signed bebe for £7.4 million, only five weeks after he signed for Vitória de Guimarães on a free transfer. prior his move to vitoria he was offered to several clubs for £125,000 and there were no takers.

i am not questioning buttner's ability here as i never watched or even heard of him, but what's with the sudden increase in transfer fee that we are paying, for a player who just a few weeks earlier was a lot cheaper. i know once a club like manchester united are linked to a player, the price of a player will goes up a bit. but does it seems a bit mental when we splash out over 7 million for a player who we could have signed for less than a quarter of a million had we moved quicker. and now we are signing a supposed 2 million player for 4 million?

I hope this doesn't come back to bite us - as in Pogba.

I was thinking about the inflated price, too.
We want to sign someone, so the selling club automatically raise the blinds?

What was all this coming from Southampton about a mystery third party that scuppered their transfer too?

What worries me more is that two Polish clubs thought he was a realistic target for them but didn't bid because they didn't feel he was good enough.

Like Essien (Zaglebie) and Ivanovic (Polonia).

Why wasnt he allowed to train?

Can tell he's a cover signing when he has not even spoke to Fergie yet. Most players give quotes that they spoke to him before signing.

i heard that as well

It's bollocks though, Essien was supposedly on trial when he was 17 but not a single person at Zaglebie can confirm that, Ivanovic was too expensive for Legia (not Polonia) and Lokomotiv made a bid around the same time, they didn't deem him not good enough.

A friend of mine, who is an Ajax supporter, sent me this. He knows a bit of dutch and claims we bet them to him.

For Alexander Büttner seems like a dream to come out. The left Vitesse was in the interest of Ajax and Southampton, but now seems on his way to Manchester United. "This is truly a dream come true."

"It's all gone very quickly and I am obviously very happy," says Büttner to Omroep Gelderland. At the club brand new acquisition Robin van Persie, he must be the substitute Patrice Evra. Moreover Büttner signs a contract for five seasons as the medical examination is conducted properly. Earlier this week it was announced that Ajax was a good candidate for Büttner. The defender himself responded positively to the rumor that he would be involved in a transfer of Theo Janssen to Arnhem. That now seems no longer to arrive. (Photo: VI-images/Orange Pictures)

He'll probably be on the bench a few times during the next month.

With Jones, Smalling and potentially Ferdinand out, Butters will be the only defender available on the bench if our starting line up is Rafael-Evans-Vidic-Evra.

Hope Evra will get more rests this season. His lack of rest could easily be the reason for his decision-making vanishing at times.

Personally I think his decision making is the second best at the club behind Vidic, he's overtaken Rio for me already.

Is there any way of highlighting the first word more?

I love signings like these.. seeming out of nowhere.
Its even better if the player comes good.

We don't need world beater for a lb position, but a natural, decent enough replacement for Evra.
