Eh... No.

If we should be looking at anyone from the Norwegian league - I would have a look at Strømsgodset's Stefan Johansen.

Probably one of if not the best player in the league, 21-year old, deep lying playmaker, fantastic passing range, intelligence, good physique and scores goals as well.

Also, his development this last season has been nothing short of exceptional. From slightly unfit winger who couldn't get a sniff in a Glimt-side struggling in Adeccoligaen, to best central midfielder in the league in just over a season - that's the sort of development that is bound to catch the eye of scouts.

I predict a bright future for the lad, in a good side. The potential is there, the position fits, he's very much a United-player in terms of style.. But questions, as always, comes with the talent, is he good enough? I'm not sure, but I wouldn't mind us taking a punt on him.

His mentality and determination is bound to be good, as well.. He's come a long, long way from when he arrived at the club.

Seeing as Holland are massively short of left backs why wasn't he in the squad this Summer?

Must admit I saw him for one of the first times yesterday - and he was very good. Brann couldn't get near him - a midfielder who can pass the ball and Norwegian ? Strange

Just read a news report saying he was signing (he said it not any of the clubs).

part of it said he was on the short list or something for the squad, but didn't make it.

So this person a serious signing for the first team, or just a cover option until we get fabio back??

He wasnt in the dutch squad? He must be shit. We have never heard of him? He must be shit. He is costing 5 million? He must be shit. Southampton and Fulham were after him? He must be shit. He has tattoo's on his arms? He must be shit. There is no video of him on youtube showing him taking on wingers for fun? He must be shit. He ain't Leighton Baines? He must be shit. We are signing him of Vitesse Arnhem and not Ajax or PSV? He must be shit.

Give the lad a chance for pete's sake- it's not a big outlay and he will be Evra's understudy and he has time on side to improve. He can also play in two positions. Oh people in Holland don't rate him? The french didn't rate Cantona (i am in no way claiming he will have a similar impact before you jump down my throat). Don't write him off before he has kicked a ball.

Left back and?

This.

As in the fears are fair enough IMO.

Also from what I can tell he has no U21 or U18 caps

So wait, we're buying a young, cheap, well endowed Dutch footballer who won't expect to play much in our weakest position on the pitch?

feck sake, what a shit signing.

And he will only cost £5m , he must be shit, if we paid £10m plus then he would obviously be good lol

This is fabulous. He was on the shortlist for the Euro's, he comes from the Amsterdam academy. He looks a real talent, and he wont cost the Earth. But... what makes it particularly 'fabulous' is that its happened under the radar, ie without a thousand pages of muppetry.

Tremendous - this is how ALL transfers should happen :D

That's a strange statement to make. We wouldn't buy him for £10m since £5m is apparantely what he's worth, with us willing to offer it and Vitesse willing to accept.

If he was a better player, he would cost more, so you could understand why people are more excited when the transfer fees are higher.

Then again, I do admit that it's not inevitable that top signings have to cost shitloads of money (as proven by the signings of Vidic and Evra). But these are exceptions to the general rule whereby the better the player is, the higher he's valued at.

I really must have missed something this time.

I'd say you're the only one!

That's odd logic.

Andy Carroll was exciting alright.

I can imagine the negotiations with Vitesse now>

Vitesse :OK, you can have him for 3m.
Gill : We'd rather pay 10m if thats alright with you. Our fans just won't him seriously otherwise.
Vitesee : Emm, OK! You English are weird....

FFS some of you lot.....

How many were moaning that we needed a LB? We get one and there is still moaning.

He will provide cover for Evra, so he is covering a potential weakness in the squad, which makes us stronger. That will do for me.

What he's saying is, that if the exact same player cost 1 million quid or 10 million quid, we'd treat him differently; even if he's exactly the same; because none of us have a fecking clue on how good he is.

"Obviously" if we signed Kagawa for 40 million quid, he'd be regarded as being better than "Hazard" whereas many opposition fans don't even regard Kagawa very highly because his transfer fee was low.

That's not what I meant. It's obvious we won't offer more than what Vitesse ask for. It's just that if he was really good, they would be holding out for much more than 5m, unless they're in some kind of financial trouble.

Mate, there is so much more to buying a player than the fee. You have to factor in their contract, the club stature, their marketability, what they've won, media hype, awards etc etc.

He's a very little known player from a relatively small(ish) Dutch club who feck all have seen play before, naturally he won't cost as much.

Kagawa cost Dortmund €350,000 a few years ago, because they signed him from a Japanese club and nobody had a clue who he has. Two years later, he's won the Bundesliga twice and been shortlisted for PoTY both times, and hey presto, we buy him for £14,000,000. It doesn't mean he's magically become 12 times as good as he was.

Worth bearing in mind we paid just £5.5m for our current left back. Kyle Walker's everyone's new favourite right back and he cost even less. Sagna didn't cost much himself did he?

I would say many fans make judgements on players based on what they know or have seen.Valuations are down to the negotiating clubs and may or may not reflect the player's ability. So much is down to hype, agents' spin and the profile of the player.

Hazard is seen as a flair player and those tend to be hyped up far more than the Kagawas of his world

That's probably true. But what I'm saying is that the exact same player shouldn't cost more unless you enter a bidding war or something and end up paying over the odds. To suggest the same player could go for either 1m or 10m is a purely hypothetical situation.

Or, if he's into the last year of his contract and August is close to ending.

Difference with Evra is that he was already recognized then as a very good left back and everyone knew it was a coup to buy him for £5.5m.

However, I'll be very glad to be proven wrong on this one and will be the first to admit Buttner was a good signing.

I'm sure many would have seen him play on youtube, but very few have seen him play full matches. The majority of fans of PL clubs would've seen a transfer fee. The point i was trying to make was that people use the 'fee' as an indicator of the players ability, and that's obviously a pile of poos. Zorro's incorrectly thinking that there's a very strong correlation between ability and transfer fee; and that's what many people on here are trying to fix (i.e. the Gill: 'I'll pay 10 million if thats okay with you" and Cina's effort too)

It was in line with the fees that are paid for fullbacks for the most part, was it not? If you look at the fees paid for most fullbacks - they're talking about Debuchy for £7m, for example - £5m's big money for a relatively unproven left back, IMO. The fee is the main thing that makes me think he'll be good enough for the first team.

I saw that Brwned!

I meant £0.5m more!

Good budget signing if true. Comes on the cheap and I'm sure he can do the job at LB if SAF went for him. With the money we've spent it would seem a shrewd purchase with SAF possibly even trying to save funds for another player. Either way, it's what we needed so no complaints from me.

But that's nonsense. Look at Evra, Vidic, Hernandez, Smalling; great players don't always cost tens of millions of pounds.

Well technically Smalling did cost that :)

But yes, great players can be bought for small fees still, if you have good scouts, which we do.

Then again, great players can cost a lot, like Andy Carroll.

Again, is this guy better than Fabio?

I think Fabio might have been released on loan in haste, with United having lined up another left back, which has not come off.
