Alex Song

15m is certainly not a great price for Arsenal, that much is obvious. It's not terrible, but it does them very little good, albeit more than an unsettled player would have done. But if I were an Arsenal fan I wouldn't be too impressed with the money in for Song.

I would of wanted more but sometimes you have to be realistic as well. If there was 4 clubs in for him and we got this deal I'd be a bit pissed off but only one club going for him, he only wants to join them, supposedly a disruptive influence in training so it doesn't leave us in a very strong bargaining position. Also with the window closing soon if we are going to get a replacement in we need to leave ourselves enough time to sort that out as well.

I think he will do alright for them, I think most of his games will come as CB and he is very good there. IMO a better CB than defensive midfielder so I think he will get a good few games there as that is a weakness for Barca, he is strong and good in the air so will help them. People talking about him displacing Busquets are having a laugh Yaya Toure & Mascherano who are both better midfielders than him couldn't get him out of the team so what chance does Song have.

Yeah, no chance he's going to walk into that team and dislodge Busquets at the moment. The guy's one touch passing is out of this world and he's absolutely perfect for the system they play. Maybe when Xavi retires or starts to wind down Busquets will step in his place, then paving the way for Song to move forward from centre back into Busquet's position. Saying that, you get the impression Barcelona will have produced some other mentalist to just slip in seamlessly by that point. Either that or Thiago will cement his place as a starter.

I think they got Song more as a squad player to replace Keita. Someone who can play a lot of positions in midfield and is fairly good at it, maybe can even deliver a bit more of a physical presence then the players they already got.

The only thing I really wonder is how Barca is always getting such good deals from Wenger?

Maybe they promised him that if Tito fails, he's got the job

15m is a steal. I don't understand why they let him go so cheap.

Don't get it, too cheap a price for Arsenal to sell at and Barca simply have no need for him.

From the players point of view I don't get it either. He'll surely be back-up in a team that already has too many central midfielders.

Arsenal desperately needed him this season with RVP leaving. They have made good attacking enforcements but their defense including their defensive mid is totally whack and they are going to leak goals again this season.

Apparently he told Wenger he didn't wanted to play for Arsenal again, so got rid at any cost.

But he has a three year contract, doesn't he? If he has a contract it doesn't matter if he wants to leave.

No question. fecking Diaby partnered Arteta today, not in the same league.

Its like the Modric situation then but again like Spurs, Arsenal have the upper hand because both players have at least 3 years or more to run on their contract. So there is no need to sell for cheap. Song is one of the best defensive mids out there, so if they put him up for auction, they could got at least £25m or somewhere close to it at least.

Because its not Manchester United

As for Song I'm sure he'll play CB at times and most likely he's been bought to make sure Busquets is on his top form and so he improves. Plus he already has a relationship with Fabregas so that should help both of them as Fabregas said he felt like he struggled at times.

Diaby is shit and they would have a sick ass midfield once they got back Wilshere because Cazorla, Wilshere and Song is an excellent central midfield with Arteta and Ramsey coming off the bench.

Giroud

Podolski--------Cazorla---------Walcott

Wilshere---------Song

Chamakh

Arshavin--------Arteta-------Gervinho

Ramsey-------Diaby

Without a doubt. Their defenders aren't really used that much. The home leg vs Chelsea was ridiculous. They didn't really use defenders, just midfielders and attackers. It's why Mascherano's been used so much at CB. He doesn't exactly need his aerial ability. Problem is they went gung-ho and got caught out twice and went out. Not forgetting Xavi's 32 and Puyol's 34, they won't be around forever.

I still find it strange, but I can at least see some reasoning behind it.

From what I've heard, Wenger has become fed up of players who aren't committed to the club, so he chooses to get rid instead of convincing them to stay. The last one was Fabregas and look how that turned out.

The rumour is Song said "If you keep me, I'm not gonna play" to which Wenger replied 'f off' and ordered him to leave. We can assume Arsenal wanted the deal done quick, regardless of price and given Barca were the only bidders, that played to their advantage.

Masherano has actually been really good for them in the air, surprisingly. Obviously its something he's been working on. But yeah exactly, using him there has worked very well and I'm sure thats what inspired them to get Song, another player who is a DM and someone who can play CB too.

They were rumoured to be after Martinez but talk about value for money compared to what he's going for this summer.

Was money the problem for Martinez or was it the fact that he did not want to move there?

Modric said the same to Spurs last year.
Yes but Modric is arguably Spurs' most influential and creative player over the last few seasons. While Song's assists last season were impressive, did he do his main job (defend and protect the back four) as well? I don't think so, hence why Arsenal would be happy to replace him, especially if he can get a Biglia or M'Vila.

I'm sure Wenger would have fighted for Fabregas to stay more then Song.

It's not just Wenger. Barca generaly get great deals all the time, it doesn't even mather if other teams made a bid.

That's fecking pathetic from Wenger if true. He's signed a contract you can't just breach it without expecting repercussions, he'd have lost his wage and though there is no case dealing with this situation yet, expectedly pay damages. Caving in for a derisory 15m is awful management.

£5m less than Jordan Henderson, same price as Joe Allen.

fecking shocking from Arsenal.

 Liverpool, feckin' hell.

But yeah I agree, shocking from Arsenal, he's literally three times the player Henderson is, and he was feckin cheaper! Insanity.

you really do have to worry what is going on at the Arse.

Losing top players isn't exactly new... remember when they won the double, then sold Overmas and Petit that summer.

Anelka, Falmini, Abebayor, Fabrgas, Nasri, Clichy, Henry (although he was past it).

They do let too much up and coming talent just leave.

I really don't get this transfer. He's going to Barca to sit on the bench.

But they got absolutely fleeced on the Ibra for Eto'o plus cash deal.

Sold Ibra at a significant loss as well

Flamini, Clichy, Fabregas, Nasri, Song, van Persie, Adebayor

You don't build a team by getting rid of your best players every year!

Sorry for him ???
That's a really weird view on the situation

Chief has always had some weird views on things but lately he's been even weirder. Keita played in more than 40 games in each season he spent at Barcelona, 42 appearances last year.

It's the First XI/John O Shea conundrum. People think if you are the fifth best defender/midfielder you will never actually play and are surplus.
