Alex Song

So basically as many predicted Song has not really worked out at Barca similar to Modric with Real.

Like I said back in January I'd be expecting United to be monitoring the availability of both this summer. If anything I'd think Moyes would be more likely to purchase PL proven players.

And I'll be fine with having either of them, or both, at United next season. Will be much needed reinforcement to our midfield if we decide to offload Ando and not planning around Fletch.

Modric was a flop for the majority of the first half, but in fact he's massively turned his game around and has been one of the star performers second half. Song has also featured in a lot more games too, but not as successful. Personally would want Modric more, as I don't quite see Song as a fantastic DM. Some people were raving about his long balls to RvP, but the amount of times he tried and failed is quite astonishing.

I never understood this deal as neither side really seemed to benefit other than us with the cash, but we really don't need more cash if it means weakening the squad.

He wanted to have a shot at playing for one of the world's biggest clubs in a beautiful warm city by the sea in Spain, surrounded by world class players. It didn't work out but it's not like he'll have any difficulty searching for a new club at the same level as or better than Arsenal.

14th most used player for Barcelona in the league this season. Yeah he didnt come in and right away become a core member of the team and fit the team like a glove but none of Barcelona's signings do. He'll be very positive going into next season

He'll be 26 in September whereas Modric will be 28. Whilst 28 isn't all that old, I get the feeling we'd probably be more likely to look at Song. I think he could be a good signing for us.

Pure sex.

He could really improve us. And I think that we can get him on cheap, like 12-15m.

But I prefer Osman.

Song and Modric's situations aren't similar. Modric has fit it decently. As much as Kagawa has with us.

Modric has had two decent months with some eye-catching displays in the CL against United and second leg Dortmund. However, he was voted on of the worst signings of the summer at the end of 2012 and overall his first season would have been a disappointment for such a big money signing. Madrid don't really do patience or a year setting in.

I don't get the comparison with Kagawa who cost a lot less and is much younger but I expect more from him next season as well. Personally I was a bit disappointed with Kagawa first season after the hype he got on the CAF during the summer but you can tell he is a good player and needs a year to settle.

Modric has kicked on after the game against us. Would have him or Song here in a flash. Amidst all the rumours about Fabregas, Thiago, etc...at the very least you'd think we should be monitoring the Song situation. He'd improve us considerably and make us a lot less dependant on Carrick.

Kagawa also played far less. And Modric playing means Ozil on the wing where hes nowhere near as good, so even when Modric has played well towards the end of the season he really hasnt added to what they already had with Ozil behind the striker and Di Maria on the wing instead.

Modric has indeed done well after his matches against us but he's fit the role of Madrid's big money summer signing to improve the team far worse than Song has as Busquets budget backup and an extra body to throw into defence

I agree with a lot of what you say but think Barca would be prepared to let Song go this summer. He's not really suited as an extra body to throw into defence either unlike Mascherano. Most of his qualities would be better suited as a partner for someone like Carrick. I have not seen much him play the Busquets role for Barca but he never looked the best defensively for Arsenal.

Barca bought Song for his versatility, a la Mascherano. Turned out to be a pointless purchase. Barca fans were pulling their hair out when he was starting up back.

They had a defensive crisis similar to ours though so starting Song at the back was like the few times we had to put Carrick there because there was no other option. I don't imagine it's something that would have been done under normal circumstances. His performance in defence is almost irrelevant. That said I don't think Barça fans have been overly satisfied with his midfield performances either, but from what I've seen he's been in and out of the team and as someone said earlier, he went to the one team who's midfield he was never likely to improve.

Both him and Modric were voted the seasons worst signings in As or Marca, but Modric's late season resurgence might see them keep him another season. Song has voiced his discontent I think (I remember Wenger saying in a presser that he might be unhappy but he should give it another season). I think he could fit right into our midfield.

Modric made a big mistake leaving Spurs, had he stayed on he would have become a legend, and a bumper contract most likely. Had he come to us he would have a PL medal and possibly CL.

I'd have him over Song, who seems a bit too limited for our system.

Wasn't their defensive crisis at the start of the season around the time they bought Song? I was under the impression he was bought as a utility to plug holes, in defence and midfield, and there was a lot of criticism of Barca for not buying a proper CB.

Rumours he had fallen out big time with the coaching staff hence why we were keen to get rid. Good passer and tackler but plays like someone who doesn't want or need responsibilities. Goes wondering out of position and made it too easy for the opposition bypass. His best performances came with Arteta mopping up behind him. Always felt we needed someone more disciplined in his role so Had no problem with him leaving, relying on Diaby to regain fitness and replace him was the problem though....

Song benefitted. He helped win a trophy

Helped is probably pushing it....

So out of the big players who left Arsenal recently, who hasnt won a trophy? RVP, Nasri, Clichy, Song and Fabregas have won it. Did Adebayor win La Liga with Madrid?

No. He did win the Copa Del Ray though.

That awkward moment when you think you're going to lift the cup but then...
