Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

I hope we get one of either Alex or Hazard. I don't want both of them to go to Arsenal.

Great advertisement for the caf: people with a reading age of 8 and others who can't add up.

We'll keep the red flag flying here (non-contentious to even the dimmest mod).

alastair's math was bad because of the way he phrased his statement. While United offered £8k, Arsenal offered 25% more at £10k. That we all agree on. I'm assuming he got the 20% part by working backwards. If he had said United offered him 20% less than Arsenal, he would have been right because the base figure would be £10k vs £8k.

There. You're not quite a complete idiot.

And you guys think Ramsey joined Arsenal because it would be easier than getting past Gibson as a midfield starter?

However, it is acknowledged that the youngster's advisers are more in favour of him moving to Arsenal, given the club's reputation for the quality of their football as well as Wenger's ability to groom players into stars.

I'm not really concerned with whether we sign him or not but Fergie surely has just as good if not better record with young players.

Ramsey knew that whoever you have playing in the middle would fcuk off once they come good for a season or two.

Gibson isn't a midfield starter.... what the hell are you talking about?

He would have to get past Anderson, Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes and Giggs (and potentially Hargreaves when he was making his decision) before becoming a starter. Gibson would have been the first one past! Only 6 other players after that....

My cousin played against him for Daggers at the start of the month, said he and Lallana were good.
Chamberlain was good and collecting the ball, popping it off then moving.

We can have a closer look at him when we go to Southampton. I'm very curious to see what's all the fuss over him about.

All the signs at the moment seem to point to him heading to Arsenal but maybe in the summer as opposed to this transfer window. I havn't seen much of him at all but the hype seems to have gone into overdrive, though that hype proved to have a lot of substance when it came to the likes of Ramsey, Walcott and Bale.

Sir Alex Ferguson on red alert over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping to make it third time lucky in his hunt for Southampton sensation Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The United manager has seen targets Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott slip through his grasp at St Mary’s in the past and is determined not to be denied this time around.

He will get a close-up view of the highly-rated 17-year-old when United take on Southampton in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Ferguson is expected to confirm his interest then in the hope that he will fend off the challenges from Arsenal and Liverpool for the midfielder.

Arsene Wenger remains in the driving seat to sign the £10m-rated starlet.

He beat Ferguson to the punch when landing Walcott from Southampton in 2006 and Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff two years later.

Bale left Southampton for Tottenham in 2007, despite interest from United, and is currently one of the most highly sought-after players in Europe.

Ferguson exacted some revenge on Arsenal last January when convincing Chris Smalling to choose Old Trafford over the Emirates in a £10m deal from Fulham.

On that occasion Smalling was loaned back to Craven Cottage for the remainder of the season.

United will look to do something similar with Oxlade-Chamberlain – perhaps even allowing him to stay at Southampton beyond the summer.

The player is understood to prefer a move to Arsenal – but his future will be determined by who comes up with the highest offer. Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese is hoping to deal for a fee in excess of £10m, which could frighten off Arsenal.

But Ferguson has made it clear that he is willing to spend serious cash on emerging talent having increasingly become frustrated with inflated prices in the transfer market.

He was happy to spend £25m on the relatively unproven Smalling, Javier Hernandez and Bebe last year with the former two already paying dividends.

A lot of different sites are running the story that we'll discuss a transfer for Oxlade-Chamberlain tomorrow before the match, without any quotes it does seem like convenient guesswork more than anything else. I suppose it does offer an interesting side-story for the match, and this sort of a transfer does fit in with our recent dealings though Arsenal still seem to be favourites.

The papers will always put 2&2 together over the next few days and come up with 5, just because we playing Southampton. Personally I cannot see the lad leaving Southampton this season because they are well placed for an automatic return to the Championship.

I was watching Nigel Adkins on Sky last night and I had to agree with him when he reckons young players who move early in their careers (to bigger clubs) don't develop their full potential.

Sir Alex also spoke about Oxlade-Chamberlain in his press conference earlier today -

Saints set-up impresses Fergie

The 17-year-old is the most coveted young player in the country at present, with Arsenal said to be the front-runners in the chase for his signature.

However, with the Gunners failing to reach an agreement so far, Manchester United could make a move, with Ferguson getting a chance to assess the teenager's merits against his own side in the FA Cup at St Mary's Stadium tomorrow evening.

Ferguson is too experienced to get involved in discussion about that potential transfer. But he does acknowledge how well Southampton have done with their development of young players down the years.

"Alex Chamberlain is only young but he has potential," said Ferguson.

"Southampton have done very well bringing young players through over the years.

"He is another one along with Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott. Before that they had the Wallace brothers and Alan Shearer.

"They have been good at that. They have done a lot right."

Oxlade-Chamberlain will be one of the major threats to United's hopes of progressing into the fifth round.

Southampton are starting to re-establish themselves amongst the League One front-runners again after a turbulent campaign that involved the dismissal of Alan Pardew in August.

Nigel Adkins had an unenviable task steadying the ship at a club who have been mired in financial strife.

But Ferguson knows United must expect to overcome a tough test if they are to reach the last 16.

"Nigel Adkins is doing an excellent job," he said.

"To follow Alan Pardew was not easy.

"Alan is a really good manager and did a great job at Southampton. "They also had to cope with administration and relegation.

"But now they have a good opportunity to get back into the Championship and it looks as though they will do it.

"I went saw them at Oldham recently when they won 6-0, so I know it won't be an easy game."

Agreed, has bags of potential. Agree with their chairman though, he should stay where he is for the season as least or his development could suffer.

Hmm...if he goes to Arsenal or United he'll get opportunities I reckon. If he has talent he'll play, atleast in cup matches. Not sure about other clubs.

Cup matches for us or Arsenal aren't enough I dont think, playing every week for Southampton will do him more good for the moment.

He looks a fantastic talent. Really impressed today.

He really does, I had actually never heard of him until the transfer rumours to Arsenal started.

Looked like an intelligent player, who wasn't completely dependent on his physical attributes(pace, strength etc etc)

Nah, he should go to a better club to train in better facilities, with better coaches and superior players. If he stays at Southampton for too long it will only get harder for him to make a step up, a year or two will do him no harm but longer than that will make it difficult. It's a League One team at the end of the day, not even a Championship one.

I wonder if we'll be trying to hammer something out while Fergie and (maybe) Gill are there. He was pretty impressive.
