Aleksandar Dragović - defender - possible target?

Of the very limited time I've seen him, I have seen far better central defenders around his age.

Out of pure interest, can you name them please? Are they attainable? Marquinhos yes, Laporte yes (he'd cost north of £30m though), and...? I'd also like Varane, but he's not coming here. Who else is out there?

There are about five Austrian United supporters in this thread who have watched him on a regular basis since he broke through at Austria Vienna, so we have a clue how good he is. One thing's for sure, he's an awful lot better on the ball than Smalling, Jones and Evans, good in the air and very commanding. Excellent (young) CB are quite rare in Europe at the moment, but he's one of them IMO. If we don't snap him up now another top tier club will do so within the next couple of seasons.

That does sound really promising. Cheers for that.

I don't know anything about him tbh. I know West Ham have been scouting N'koulou, are we sure the offer may not have come from them for Dragovic? After all the OP claims West Ham are watching him and if they're also watching N'Koulou then its a safe bet they're in for a CB this window.

Could be, but have they got £15m to spend on a CB in January?

Schar & Balanta both wouldn't cost the earth. Do you really need a list? I've seen nothing in his game to view him as a better option over what we already have. The back line really needs a leader, personally think Schar would be a better option, as he looks a natural leader.

But as 've said all along I'm in the wait & see camp.

British media told it's not happening? It's on

I do wonder if there are many who have actually watched him a lot. Seems to me there's a lot of oh he must be better than what we have, based on youtube & maybe the odd game where they've seen him. Personally I'm waiting to see if anything develops & then find out if he's any good. Of the very limited time I've seen him, I have seen far better central defenders around his age.
Those who are giving the most assertive positive assessments of him, for example @Anduin, are those who have seen him play a lot. Those who are certain he won't be an improvement have seen highlights reels and maybe a couple of games. :p

Howard Nurse is still awaiting confirmation of Fergie's retirement tbf.

We denied most of our signings in the summer right.

Or am i not remembering things correctly.
Pretty sure we denied every single one, yeah. And I remember some journalists posting articles that we had missed out on either Shaw or Herrera after it became abundantly clear that the signing was about to be announced.

Signing players to defend who aren't very good defenders, is only going to end 1 way! And why sign defenders to play in a 3 at the back when it doesn't work very well in the Premier league & Van Gaal only uses it as he doesn't have the right players to play a back 4?
Personally can't see why anyone is getting excited at the thought of signing a player who is most likely worse than what we already have....

..

This is the internet, it's full of people who tell porkies...

Indeed.

Vidic MkII. Rojo is going to be Ferdinand MkII.

On the topic of Rojo, I loved the way he had a personal battle with Zamora and kept him in his pocket all game. Reminded me of the way Ferdinand used to pick out an attacker who could be a potential issue and make their life a misery all game by bullying them and not giving then an inch.

Rojo will need to sort out a few things in his game to even be considered anything close to Rio in his prime

Rojo will never be anywhere near Rio even if improves threefold over where he is today. Not the same sort of potential, Rio was one of top 3 defenders in football for large part of his career.

Agree. He's still got a long way to go but clearly our best defender.

Not for me, really don't see that. Smalling is easily better than what Rojo has shown so far. Not to say Rojo won't improve massively once he's become more accustomed to English football, he's made a decent start considering he came from a far weaker league. Smalling however is clearly a talented defender too, I dunno if brainfarts like the ones against City stick in peoples' minds more, or if its because Rojo is new people are too eager to praise him.

Never heard of him until now and I hate making opinions on YouTube vids because I've proved to Arsenal fans in the past that Youtube can make any player look good and backed it up with a vid of Bebe looking like the decent player he is :nervous:

I agree.

Rojo is not an absolute fanny.

Evans/Jones and Smalling (less so then the other 2) are getting on my tits this season.

Rojo had some horrible games, just got lucky we didn't concede.

If we exclude the Man City game, Smalling is actually having a very good season. If all other defenders would be on his level, we wouldn't even think about new CB.

How is Rojo clearly better then Smalling?

Bet this didnt get on your tits

@soap @Ekeke

I hope Rojo thanked Smalling for this. Wouldn't you agree guys? Rojo has done a lot of this type of shit this season and got away with it, Smalling not even once.

As a pure defender, Smalling is quite comfortably our best defender. Problem is, he's constantly injured, and he doesn't particularly fit with LVG's methods.

The Rojo/Smalling partnership definitely looked like it had potential, but you just can't rely on Smalling to stay fit for any amount of time. So its pretty hard to build a defence around him.

Agreed. He is pretty poor on the ball too and his decision making can be off sometimes but he's got the tools. Out of him, Jones and Evans he definitely has the best chance to make it.

That's a fair point, I can't argue against that. And I think that it's more injuries than the style which is a problem for Smalling, as he can be good with the ball (our midfield needs to move more), which is enough if you defend good.

His main selling point at the moment seems to be that he's better on the ball than Jones and Smalling... Who are both wank on the ball. He doesn't exactly look elegant in possession.

He's too rash sometimes. Still just 24 but I don't think he's potentially world class.

The thing I really like about Rojo is that he's shown such clear improvements in the 6 months he's been here. In the first few games he was letting balls bounce all over the place, and not looking very confident in the air. But now he's getting his head straight on the ball and out of danger. If he continues to improve at the same rate in the other aspects of his game, he could be very good.
