Aleksandar Dragović - defender - possible target?

The thing I really like about Rojo is that he's shown such clear improvements in the 6 months he's been here. In the first few games he was letting balls bounce all over the place, and not looking very confident in the air. But now he's getting his head straight on the ball and out of danger. If he continues to improve at the same rate in the other aspects of his game, he could be very good.

Yeah that is true, he was pissing me off with his indecisiveness early on, as you say, letting the ball bounce and then having a panicky swipes at it, which he's not been doing recently.

You can post that gif all you want and say if it wasn't for smalling Rojo would have been punished, you defend as partners when you defend, unfortunately with Smalling you get about 4 games out of him and then he'll miss 4. What is the point?

You also can't keep saying apart from the City game. It happened and cost us points, I don't recall Rojo losing us points this season.

Smalling is the best defender we've got, but it means screw all if he's always injured.

I can, he's not EPL experienced as has played in a poor league the majority of his career.
Schar & Balanta both wouldn't cost the earth. Do you really need a list? I've seen nothing in his game to view him as a better option over what we already have. The back line really needs a leader, personally think Schar would be a better option, as he looks a natural leader.

Oh boy Schar and Balanta must be absolutely wrecking a top league. What leagues are they playing in again?

I do wonder if there are many who have actually watched him a lot. Seems to me there's a lot of oh he must be better than what we have, based on youtube & maybe the odd game where they've seen him. Personally I'm waiting to see if anything develops & then find out if he's any good. Of the very limited time I've seen him, I have seen far better central defenders around his age.

You berate others for judging him based on youtube and the few odd games which they have watched him, but claims that you have only watched very limited of him as well. So why are you judging then? If you don't rate him, fine, make a post and get on with it. Making 5-6 posts telling others that he is not really all that good and then shun other people opinion though, is just plain annoying.

This is the internet, it's full of people who tell porkies...

Oh the irony.

Of the very limited posts that I have seen from you, you doesn't seems to be the sharpest tool in the shade.

We didn't lose points directly because Smalling was red carded. We actually saw a lot of the ball even after the incident and if not for Hart saving Di Maria's last gasp attempt the game would've been tied.

This Dragovic looks like a diamond in the rough. Hope we sign him if he's really available at the rumored price

Stop that.

I agree that Smalling did cost us probably points there, but City had few chances before his red card.

Also, I do agree that partners have to protect each other, but Smalling got his red card because he had again to protect his fellow player, as Valencia was horrible that game. And also, Smalling is the player who most of the times protect his partners and not other way around, so every of his partners, including Rojo have to improve (Rojo and Jones do look like they are improving to be fair).

So: Could be. But could be also just the usual Twitter-bu******. Oh, and Drago is Arsenal-fan. He mentioned it a few years ago. But who cares?

These bits don't make a single difference. Only if the player grew up at the club that he's a fan of, it could affect his choices when he leaves. Otherwise it doesn't matter at all. It's their profession.

Comes across as a very 'modern' thinking footballer from that article, so it's clear why we would be interested - it's the sort of defender van Gaal wants.

Get it clear, Smalling didnt cost us points, we would lose that match anyways (it was still very stupid) but City were by far the better side, ddg saved us again and the ref should have handed them 2 pens, with or without Smalling, we wouldnt win anything. The sending off even gave us more chance to win, as we just parked the bus more and tried to counter attack. Pre-redcard, they were just walking through our defence/midfield.

You're absolutely right

This - there are examples all over the place, not least with ourselves having Arsenal fans Ashley Young and Chris Smalling in the squad. It shouldn't be an issue.

I'm easily 6' 3", me.

That is nada. I am 6 feet 6.

I've also noticed that they are in fact almost identical, jewellery aside.

He's a very average defender and not better than what we already have. I'd say we either go for a top class defender or leave it. No more mediocracy needed

It's hard to say how he'll do in the Premier League, since the leagues he played in so far weren't exactly great, but he's played against the best opposition with Austria and done well, so don't call him mediocre yet. One thing is for sure, he won't get bullied by any opposition player (unlike some of our lot), he's too determined and aggressive for it.

Thing is, all of our current defenders have obvious weaknesses, Smalling bad on the ball, Jones too rash, Rojo too risky, Evans not good enough in the air, whatever. When you look at Dragovic, he doesn't have any significant weakesses like what we have already, he's good on the ball, good passing, strong in the air, good tackler, great positioning, that's very valuable IMO. Surely he isn't as proven as Thiago Silva or sprays the flair like Sergio Ramos does. He could turn out as a poor signing, but he could also turn into the next Vidic. Worth the try IMO, as he brings all the necessary attributes to become one of the best, he's very determined and ambitious and is really really strong mentally.

I watched him playing for Basel and he never stood out in that team either. He was hit and miss. Plus it's a huge step up from the Austrian or Swiss League to the EPL

He seems to be a little on the weak side, but smart and gets around decent for a centre back. Sounds an upgrade on Jones but not on Smalling.

Have to admit Schar impressed me more, but then he's a lot stronger and more feisty. Not sure if he's really better but he makes bigger impressions in one off games.

Much like Referees if a defender doesn't stand out in a game then I assume its a good thing :)

But he isn't playing in the Austrian or Swiss League anymore and he has really developed since then. His professionalism and the trust Austrian teammanager Marcel Koller put in him over the last year have done him lots of good.

I am overly enthusiastic about this, because I'm Austrian too, but all my points are valid.

Dragovic is very aggressive and tough. Where does this bullshit that he's weak come from? Probably because he's 'only' 1,86.

Also, he has developed in huge steps since he left Basel, so it's not the best way to judge him on his performances from 2 years ago, especially since he's only getting 24. Like I already wrote, you can't say he's better than Smalling/Rojo/Jones unless Dragovic plays in the Premier League, he has less weaknesses, but it's hard to tell now how good he is where Jones and Smalling flourish.

Every centre back is "tough" to a certain extent. He just looks like he could be muscled in the Premier League and Schar doesn't. He's very alert which is good, but could see him getting bullied and not winning enough headers in a higher league.

No.
