Aleksandar Dragović - defender - possible target?

This seems like a proper manchester united transfer of old. Seemingly very talented, young, from an obscure league, with a good name.

Agreed. Sadly he'll turn out to be an injury wreck who never develops. Classic United.

Vidic MkII. Rojo is going to be Ferdinand MkII.

On the topic of Rojo, I loved the way he had a personal battle with Zamora and kept him in his pocket all game. Reminded me of the way Ferdinand used to pick out an attacker who could be a potential issue and make their life a misery all game by bullying them and not giving then an inch.

15th best player in Kyiv's europa league games according to whoscored

http://www.whoscored.com/Teams/350

He did get sent off in one of the matches, so thats obviously going to take him down a fair bit. Still thats not encouraging
. Nobody played as much as him (5 games) and got a worse rating.

I trust our scouts more than ratings on whoscored.

As you should.

But if it turns out he's not an improvement on Smalling like people are saying on here, it shouldnt be a surprise. We had all the same stuff said about Rojo and he's a clear level below Smalling defensively, but more fancy on the ball. Dragovic seems to be the same way

Daily Mail are also reporting Arsenal are looking at him as a backup to Gabriel, in case the move falls through (which it doesnt seem like it will as Villarreal say they've reached an agreement). Just worth mentioning

Time will tell. LvG said he wouldn't invest in players if he didn't believe they'd improve us and considering his track record, this looks promising.

Its more about the types of players. From this and the Rojo deal it seems like he wants CBs with ability on the ball, over ability to defend. Is it because that suits his 3 at the back better? Seems that way. He looks like he'd be a good improvement to Jones at RCB of the 3

Signing a 23 year old central defender, with serbian genes from a Russian or Ukraine league. Clearly LvG has spent the winter studying United's history.

His next goal is - finding a 23/24 year old central defender from London who left the capital a few years ago to go north to a club which then imploded.

And then he will probably search the Midlands for a classy midfielder around 24-25 years old who is "so good it's not even a gamble to sign him". Of course the curly hair makes it a bit more difficult to find the right player.

Hopefully he is better at corners.

Signing players to defend who aren't very good defenders, is only going to end 1 way! And why sign defenders to play in a 3 at the back when it doesn't work very well in the Premier league & Van Gaal only uses it as he doesn't have the right players to play a back 4?
Personally can't see why anyone is getting excited at the thought of signing a player who is most likely worse than what we already have....

Can't see him being worse than the shite we have currently to be honest.

I can, he's not EPL experienced as has played in a poor league the majority of his career. I know that Jones, Smalling & Evans have all done very well in the EPL at various times. But you think all of our defenders are shite so you've already decided an unknown is going to be better. We'll have to see if it happens and how he progresses...

Remember him doing quite well against us for Basel in 11-12 UCL. And he was 20 back then. Haven't seen much of him since, but he seems like a proper CB to me, I disagree with him most likely being worse than what we got.

I rate Smalling & Rojo, Evans is woeful and Jones as much as i want him to do well just keeps looking gash.

A certian Vidic came from a poor league once upon a time....

Yes I'm fully aware of where Vidic came from & how gash he was while he adjusted his game to the EPL. And how can you rate "shite" players? Seems a bit of a contradiction....
Don't see anything akin to Vidic in Dragovic, few YouTube vids & nothing much to get giddy about. I personally don't see why people are getting excited & claiming he's better than what we have. Really he's an unknown quality & if it happens it happens & we'll have to see how he gets on...

Didn't say they were all gash, I was mainly referring to Evans and Jones (though i would keep him)

I think this is those scenarios where it's okay to want him before we know who he is.

I'd take a defender considered a leader who van Gaal and his crew rate over Jonny Evans any day. Jesus, I would take my Gran over Jonny Evans

In all likelyhood, any CB we sign is likely to be an upgrade on Evans. Else we'd have burnt the scouting report on the player.

if hummels is the marquee summer transfer, and we get dragovic in now, are we destined for a back 3 longterm? or are we dumping all our cb's bar jones/smalling.

-------------------De Gea
------Dragovic---- Hummels-----Rojo
Rafael/clyne-----------------------------Shaw
-------------------Carrick/blind
-----Herrera/strootman---------Di maria/mata
-------------Rooney-------Van Persie

Personally I think it's longterm shit football.

I don't think we will necessarily sign Hummel's at all if Dragovic does well and forms partnership.

BTW I also do not get fuss about Hummels as guaranteed success either. He is a leader but has injury issues and in a struggling team his form has also been patchy. Actually I think more physical league might exaggerate his injury breaks and there's a chance that his physical limitations get exposed more.

I think it would mean the opposite. Louis imo is only playing 5 at the back because our defenders aren't good enough to be a back 4. Signing Dragovic and, to use your example, Hummels. Would likely mean he would feel safe with a back 4 and the quality of our defense.

LvG would definitely play a 433 could he hand select 11 players. It will be next season before we see his true style.

I am bit surprised that he is described here as totally unknown. Sure, he is not a star, but fans who haven't watch premier league or the big games in the champions league only have a huge possibility to have heard his name before.

In other words: He is not a nameless stranger coming from nowhere. He was one of the best defenders in the Austrian league, in the Swiss league, he is considered as one of the big talents of austrian football (a country which is not full of talents but has increased enormously over the years. I think Bayern has six or seven Austrians in their youth teams.) He is doing well at Dinamo, he is one of the reasons why Austria is leading their qualification group (something they normally don't do), he has played champions league matches, europa league matches, he has been scouted by Inter and Juventus,...

So... for fans who only want Hummels or the second best defender in the world, the Dragovic saga is of course a boring story. For everyone else it could be an interesting transfer.

Jones has been nowhere near as bad as Evans this season. In fact in a back 3 he has probably been our best Cb on average from the start of the season.

As I said before too many people rate our CB's based on last 1/2 games. And there's constant moaning about distribution specifically when problem is more lack of options and fluidity in front of them. Even Rojo has made all kinds of dodgy passes.

Never heard of him. Sound like this deal will happen though. Wonder when the United journos will get a signal from United

Once we land proper CB, i don't this LVG would play 3 at back and between i don't think Hummels is joining us.

Yeah and Herrera put a picture of him with Sir Bobby up before it was official. Shaw changed his Twitter bio to Manchester United player before it was announced too. Pretty much all of our recent signings have been made obvious through social media before official confirmation from the club.
