Aleksandar Dragović - defender - possible target?

i can see us buying him, as he's young and relatively cheap. It would also allow LvG the flexibility to buy a few more players

Dragovic drops hint about Man United summer move, says it's buzzing around his head

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Aleksander Dragovic during the January transfer window. The Dynamo Kiev player was all set to make the transfer to Manchester United according to several reports in the Austrian press. There was certainly excitement in Austria at the prospect of Dragovic moving to Manchester United and there was an awful lot of smoke for there to be no fire - although that's rarely an indication of anything.

Dragovic was again linked with a Manchester United move this week by The Daily Mirror and the stories will almost certainly continue until the end of the next transfer or until Dragovic leaves Kiev and signs for someone else. A transfer somewhere looks likely in the summer and would be considered good for the 24 year old's career, he's probably ready to move on.

It'll be no surprise that a potential move for Dragovic to the Premier League is still catching attention in Austria and during the international break the defender has been specifically asked about Manchester United and Arsenal by Die Presse.

Pressed about non-stop rumours regarding a transfer, Dragovic said "I would be lying if I said that something is not buzzing around in the back of my head... but as long as no concrete offer is on the table, I do not need to deal with it in more detail."

Dragovic has said several times he's not going to get too carried away until he's got a concrete offer but his words more than hint that a transfer this summer is something he's quite keen on. Asked if, as well as his own contract situation, he keeps an eye on the situation of defenders at Manchester United, Dragovic said "Not yet, but I might in the future (laughs). No, seriously, I know what people are playing at the top clubs in defence, and what the competition situation would look like."

Nah, if we are buying a centre half then he was to be absolute top quality such as Hummels, Godin, Silva or Varane. Otherwise I'd rather just give Smalling and Jones games to develop with Rojo as back up.

I tend to agree, but Dragovic is quickly establishing himself as a top defender himself, much as when Vidic was in Moscow shortly before we bought him. He'd be a good buy at a relatively modest price.

Chances that he is one of the supposed three deals we have lined up? Not the biggest name so he'd be more likely to wrap up a deal early.

Wouldn't surprise me. I'm hopeful that we move away from the higher priced hollywood/galactico buys and focus on very good emerging players, much as what we did with Vidic and Evra a decade ago.

If Jones and Smalling have really convinced Van Gaal of their worth then would he still be in the market for a CB? We have Rojo, Evans, McNair and Blackett too.. Unless we're looking to sell one of them, should we be looking at another defender?

Yes. No leader there and w know tje injur record of our defenders. We need another top CB in my opinion., someone different to what we already have ----> Hummels

I'm not particularly sold on Hummels and still think there is life left in Smalling and perhaps Jones. I am not convinced Rojo is good enough to be a regular, but can provide good cover in two roles.

I think Dragovic would be an excellent signing from what I've seen. His profile is such that it would probably still be a case of letting the best man win between him and our other centre halves too. I would definitely advocate his signing. He would improve our centre of defence without a massive outlay - and looks to have the potential to be a top class defender.

This could be said of the entire squad. For example if Fellaini and Herrera are integrating and developing nicely, then why should we be looking at a new midfielder when we will those two alongside the like of Carrick and Blind available.

I do think LvG will buy a defender, midfielder, and attacker - which may well end up being Dragovic, Vidal or Strootman, and Depay or Bale.

We most likely won't get the most established defenders. But there's no reason why a younger defender can't out perform someone like hummels who has been part of a shit defence. It's not set in stone who is top quality. It's more about getting someone on the brink of becoming a top top defender and needing just the platform.

Yes, but Van Gaal did say he'd give everyone a chance to prove themselves and those who are in the squad have all proved themselves with the exception of Falcao, Rafael and to an extent RvP.

Also we have players doing well on loan as well like Nani, Lingard, Keane, Henriquez, Pearson.. Does Van Gaal give them a shot or buy?

Going by his history at other clubs he's always preferred to promote from within rather than buy big names.

IMO the positions we outright need some strengthening at the moment is RB and CM.

I wouldnt be surprised if LvG gives McNair a shot next season and doesnt buy an established CB..

McNair seems to have fallen off the pecking order with everyone healthy. Next year, I'd imagine it will be Smalling-Jones-Rojo-Evans in that order, which would leave McNair and Blackett as prime contenders for a loan.

As for RB, i don't see any better options than the players we have right now. Valencia has done a good job and is obviously quite a threat going forward, which will overlap well with Mata or Di Maria next year.

Yeah, with 4 older CB's in the squad I dont think Van Gaal will see a need to bring in a 5th established one. He might give a younger player that spot.

If we sell Evans, then yes, I think we might be planning to bring in someone like Hummels.

In the RB position, we have no cover in case Valencia gets injured and Rafa doesnt seem to be LvG's good books at the moment. do we sell Rafa?

I don't think any player is not in LvG's good books. It just appears as such because Valencia has continued to play after Rafa's injury healed. Having both of them will be more than enough at RB. Evans is obviously the big question mark. Can't see him staying, and if he leaves, that would probably result in a new CB coming in.

Hummels in to replace Evans and get Rafael on a new contract.

Austrian newspaper "Krone" and sports web "laola1.at" report Barcelona is close to sign Dragovic.

Can't see it happen, but his manager is doing a good job with all these rumours.

Yep, probably crap but if it forces MU's hand I'm not going to complain.

I rekon a player like dragovic is what we need at CB. Especially if we get a DM with primarily stopper/man marking ability such as Schneiderlin we are going to need our CB's to accommodate our central midfielders with passing.

Smalling is the perfect partner and almost identical player to dragovic with regards to his approach to utilising the ball.

1. Ambidextrous
2. Dribbling & passing ability
3. Ariel threats
4. Young & cheap-ish.

Not this again. The story last window pretty much came from posts on here talking him up

The caf really does believe that they control the fecking football media world don't they? Do you think random caftards made a thread about a young centre-half from Kiev before they saw articles linking him to us, on the basis that we are all so far at the forefront of European football and have been personally scouting him for United in advance?

The story came a few days after people started discussing him on here, and there was never anything to actually link us to him that window. And then it turned out we had no interest, when half of the posters were convinced he was signing.

The posts created the excitement, the news stories latched on, which caused more excitement. And nothing was actually happening, nor was there any reason to think there was

This caftards happened to be mostly guys from Austria like me who watch him regularly playing internationals. I am a big admirer of Dragovic. Almost rate him as high as Alaba. One of the best young CB out there imo.

Ah, so you are categorically sure that we had no interest in him, or have not watched him? The thread started in the beginning of January, due to discussion of us being interested in whatever media. I doubt our two pages of discussion, and a thread that even until today has only 13 pages - has whipped the whole media into a frenzy.

I wonder will this guy pop up back on our radar now wtih Ramos a dead duck and otamendi not linked?

I don't know if 13 pages are already a mega-thread, so I put it here.

The president of Dinamo Kiev said in an interview this week, that he will allow Dragovic to leave the club in summer.

Kiev won the title again and conceded only 7 goals, as far as I know.
