Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

I'm going to go out on (not much of) a limb and say nobody, not even the much heralded Yaya Toure could have done the job that Michael Carrick has done for us this season anywhere near as well as Carrick has.

He's the best one man midfield in the league, and we wouldn't be winning it without him.

Well deserved.

I think he's POTY for us, and we are most likely winning the PL, so it's not that unlikely that he gets the award(though I think Bale or Mata will get it). It would be a nice and well-deserved recognition of a player who's been great for a long time.

Been nominated for PFA Player for the Year award according to his agents. Excellent news and well deserved. He has been the best central midfielder in the PL this season.

Deserves to win it in my opinion, he won't though. He has to be nailed on for our in house awards though.

Lapped it up at the end, made up for him, been utterly fantastic this year.

Michael Carrick. Deserves more credit than he gets. Wonderful player. Best season at United.

May I be controversial? I believe he's now more important and more influential to United than Scholes has ever been.

Michael Carrick take a bow. The one constant in our ever changing midfield. He's really been great. Makeshift centre half at times too. Thank feck he stayed fit.

Cant decide who was more important to us this season - Carrick or Van Persie. We did have more cover in the striker position but not all strikers have the quality to score some of the goals RVP did this season.

He was fecking loving it tonight... mental Geordie bastard. He was geeing the crowd up at a corner when we were 3-0 up with 10 minutes to go! Like some sort of crazed party animal... add to that the fact that he was the last player to leave the pitch, and well... all I'll say is that I fear for the horses of Manchester this evening.

Seemed a little out of character but I loved that.

Well, that's clearly not true.

But anyway, what a player. Just had his best season in United colours, deserves all the recognition he's getting.

He could have a case for more important because without him we actually wouldn't have a midfield, whereas throughout scholes' career he never had to singlehandedly carry a midfield throughout an entire season.

He won't win PFA player of the year, but he should. RVP had a wee barren spell, whereas Carrick has been a solid performer week in, week out.

The problem is these awards always go to strikers or more flamboyant players.. Carrick is too low profile to win it.

Still a few games to go but Carrick should be our player of the year for me with RvP a close second.

Makes it even more hilarious how he has constantly been overlooked for England.

This and last season we have seen Carrick at his very best and being the only constant in our midfield he practically had to run it alone at times.

I hope he still has a lot of good years left in him and maybe we will bring in someone this summer who can take a bit of the workload of his shoulders, that would really be great.

You controversial?

That's very unlike of you John.

This is really amazing.

I mean who in their right mind sends a player like Barry or Parker on the field ahead of him?

Absolutely baffling decisions by Capello and now Hodgson.

I also still think that Carrick was right to decline playing for England if he would remain a backup player.

Well England's loss is our gain as not playing for the national side might just prolong his career a year or 2 longer. England aren't likely to win feck all with or without him during his playing days anyway. Carrick has always been a decent passer of the ball and we lost a bit of that from his game while he adjusted to the sitter role along with being in and out of the side for years.

But the all round quality short and long passing is back and for me that's whats made the difference this year. Not so long ago he would have have taken the ball off someone and then just tapped it to somebody a bit more creative, and now he's aware, head up and looking to slot someone in or switch the play. Carrick has had a lot of acclaim for his positional play this season, which is top draw. But let's not forget his passing from the middle of the field and how that's been one of the components of us pissing our way to 20.

That and the sort of psychological switch. He plays like one of the team's leaders, with confidence and panache.

I was listening to TalkSport (I know it was my own fault.. well actually, it's my brothers) on the way back from the game last night... Two (of the many) things I took issue with

1. The co-presenter saying that he didn't think Carrick had been that great, and didn't deserve to a PFA nod, and that he knew United fans who didn't think he has been brilliant for us this season (I conclude that any true United fan that actually thinks this is an idiot).

2. Someone saying we need a tough tackling "Nigel de Jong" type player next season... I'm not saying we don't need a midfielder, but I really hope it's not that sort of player.

I've been a Carrick defender/fanboi whatever you want to call it. I'm so happy for him that he's finally being recognised. His passing has improved immensely but that's been due to a mind shift from him I think. He just oozes confidences currently and he's actually dictating play.

Its the beard.

The biggest difference is how comfortable he is on the ball. He's just not fazed by oppo players snapping around him anymore. He was always brilliant at first-time and one-touch passing, but he's so assured in possession now.

Surely Bale has to win POTY though. He's been ridiculous.

This isn't as silly as it sounds given that you didn't say 'better'. Carrick is just about one of the most integral players I've ever seen to any United squad's success.

This sort of thing is always relative to the strength/depth of the squad and the position the player fills, but nevertheless this stands. Without Carrick this year anything could've happened. We could've finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th... who knows. I don't think we'd have won the league if he'd picked up a long term injury personally, and that's being said in view of the astronomical points different between ourselves and City. He's our only midfielder to be relied upon and certainly the only one that consistently excels irrespective of who he plays with. Without him we would've been a completely different team.

Has there ever been a season whereby Scholes has been more integral than that? I don't think so. The best seasons I've seen from Scholes have been the 2003 and 2006 seasons, but I couldn't say that Scholes was more influential than Carrick in those seasons. A more gifted player, no doubt.

Most of Scholes' great seasons he had Roy fecking Keane next to him, and the others he was paired with Carrick. For large parts of this season, Carrick was also paired with Carrick. So yeah, I think it's fair.

Obviously Scholes at his best was twice the player, but without Carrick we'd basically have no midfield... and sometimes no defence.

One man midfield indeed

For it to be Cleverley he needs to really sort out his imaginary fitness issues.

Fixed that for you, you're welcome. ;)

If we can't get Wilshere, I'd settle for Thiago. If we can't get Thiago, Veratti would be ok. If Verratti's not for sale, then Gundogan might do. What I don't want us to do is go much below that level. The Carrick back-up can be someone merely 'decent', or a promising youngster. But if we're getting someone to partner him - to bench Cleverley - then he needs to be able to firmly bench him. We don't need more players of the same level to further muddy the waters. We need a definite first-choice player to form a settled partnership with Carrick.

It's all academic, of course. We're obviously going to get Wilshere. Those seductive photos of RVP fondling the trophy will prove too much for him. :wenger:
