Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

I agree with you onm both counts, a dynamic but skillfull player would have been ideal and I still think Dembele would have been a brilliant signing.

It makes you wonder the strong interest of Sneijder in the past. He's the anti-thesis of what we portray as an ideal center midfielder for United.

Well, except that Wilshere is always injured....

More importantly, has he ever played in a midfield two?

I don't think he has for Arsenal or England.

Or are we just assuming because he is English he can do it?

Half as often as Anderson and he's twice as good. Also I vaguely remember hearing a lot of that sort of talk about RVP...

I guess that's technically true but it's hard for Wilshere to rack up as many injuries as Anderson. I mean, how could he have got injured when he wasn't even playing football? (due to an injury)

Last line is a bit silly. We are allowed to rate English players without it just being because they're English. I rate Wilshere because he's bloody brilliant.

The rest of the post is a decent point though. Common sense suggests that he could do it. He has the right attributes - a great engine, a very rounded skill-set, a good balance between attacking and defensive attributes, and superb game-intelligence, especially for his age. He actually looks a lot like a more old-fashioned sort of midfielder in a lot of ways.

That said, until he plays in a midfield two regularly, there's no way of knowing for sure if he can do it. So it's a good point. Although it's worth noting (as I seem to do a lot on transfer-related discussions) that with Rooney at number 10, we're never really playing a two-man midfield. He contributes at least as much to the midfield as, for example, Cazorla.

Sorry, sidetracking the Carrick thread a bit.

He essentially plays in a midfield two for Arsenal already. Arsenal play 4231.

Depends how literal we want to be about what constitutes a 'midfield 2'. I don't really see a difference between his role in a 4231 and what his role would be in a 442/4411.

No, it's just I'm curious. There's lots of players that play in 3s that might improve us and might be able to do it in a 2, I've just genuinely never heard of Wilshere the question being asked as to whether he can play in a midfield two despite the fact that I don't think he's really played it that much over his career.

I was wondering if that was because he was English and there was a sense that because he is he must have played in 4-4-2s at times, but I genuinely can't remember.

I think we were supposedly signing him for the Kagawa/Rooney role rather than as a proper cm.

Any good?

I didn't hear it in full but the gist was a positive one, the first segment seemed to centre around England. H ease asked if he felt aggrieved at being passed over by manager in favour of players with less to their name.

It is divided up so i expect the next segment [which i may have missed as i'm not listening to Talksprt atm] will turn to United matters.

They'll probably have it on their website after the show finishes.

Brilliant season. For the love of god find him a wing-man for next season and play them together for a run of games. Not Rooney/Jones/Giggs.

Seems strange as other teams are going for a midfield 3 we suddenly feel a midfield one is the way to go.

What is wrong with Cleverly or Anderson in the last few months? barely getting a look in even though besides Carrick they are our only genuine CMs.

Gave it away a few times which was surprising. Honestly shudder to think where we'd be without him. It's literally a 1 man midfield at times, he's the only one playing like a United player.

Does no one remember SAF coming out with this in preseason?

SAF has said it for about 5 years. However he were much more balanced across the defensive midfield when we had Fletcher and Hargreaves playing central.

I don't know why people think Carrick-Fletcher partnership was a success. I think that's one of the most uninspiring era for our midfield when those two was in charge.

Yet, it culminated in 1/3 champions league's (finals) and two league titles when we had Hargreaves and Fletcher in the squad who are both much better defensively man for man than Carrick. Hell, we even lost a defensive partner for Carrick oand got beaten in the other two. Mental how anyone would not want another genuine ball winner in the squad.

Re above not really 'hard man' more a direct 1 on 1 ball winner. For me it's the only real ingredient that is missing from our team.

He really needs a partner. I'd like to see Cleverley play more next to him but asked to sit a bit to help out the defensive load.

Michael Carrick: Made more forward passes against West Ham last night (53) than any player has done in a Premier League game this season

Does it mean any of our strikers during that time was better than Nistelrooy (another era with less trophies)? No. But it's just a matter of preference. I prefer we're not looking for Fletcher type as main CM.

Fecking hell. Seems like he overcompensated for all those 'passing sideway and backward' years.

I don't even know what that means to be honest. Considering we don't actually play with a genuine side by side forward combination. (Even though it's probably the lack of penetration in and from deeper midfield that is the reason.)

It's hard watching this team getting chomped on the counter and at the moment just watching the game again to be sure of my skepticism on Carrick's performance and again I don't understand why he's let Diame run about 35 yards with the ball from inside his own half. If he's any form of tighter on the ball carrier then he's moving away from slaying us straight down the middle. (albeit Jones just jogging back.. feck know's why he's not trying to get back and help out defensively..) He's let Diame run so far that Rafael has literally had to come inside to attempt to close the player in which he easily just dishes off. If he had have been tight to him in their own half there are literally no passes sideways for him to make yet.

It has happened a lot this season, he just cannot herd play with his 'stand off look for the intercept' style of play. This isn't even a hate Carrick knee-jerk reaction. The guy seriously needs a ball winner there and not Jones, Giggs, Cleverley (who probably complement's his attacking game the most), Anderson or Rooney. A partner, a wingman, a sidekick. Someone to balance his game and his style to build a solid platform for the front four to operate. (It's this and the unbalancing that Evra on the left that Evra creates that leads to a lot of freedom for the opposition when they counter attack which further supports my theorising on why our wingers have been extremely shite this season).

As a sole touch passer with the kind of range of passing he has would be absolutely deadly if we had someone keeping his zone tight and/or winning the ball for him and delivering up the ball in positive area's. A few times in this game already he's had about 10/15 yards ahead of him to turn and move the ball (Rooney has just gone mental at him having to come all the way back and recycle the ball) and he just hits a sideways pass to the CB which serves absolutely no purpose.

Again, I am not even trying to hate on Carrick or spark a hate debate. It's just things I've been watching over the last few seasons.

And still wasn't close to his best last night, which goes to show how good a season he's had.

It's amazing what he does in his role of "one man midfield". One day, someone with some kind of authority will realise how much better this team could have (or could be) if we had someone who could actually partner him every week.

Been nominated for PFA Player for the Year award according to his agents. Excellent news and well deserved. He has been the best central midfielder in the PL this season.

He was a bit of a one man show in our midfield this season and deserves all the praise now. For me, our best on most consistent player over the whole season

Deserved nomination. He won't win it, I don't think. Flair players tend to boss these things as they grab the most attention. Michael Carrick quietly goes about what he does very elegantly. It's great he's been recognised for his contribution though, as subtle as it can be to a neutral.

I'd love to be proven wrong though. It's be excellent he if he scooped it ahead of some of the players he's up against. RVP certainly helped give us a very handsome lead in the title race, but Carrick has been a constant and consistent force, every game, all season long. Most players have off-days, but I can't remember ever lambasting Carrick this season. He's been solid.

He won't officially win it but just being recognised for a player like Carrick is a victory IMO

Hope he gets the club awards (though I suspect they'll go to RVP)
