Adnan Januzaj

We have a few that can do that, but this bloke can run past them with the ball.

 So true.

It's in Moyes' best interests to play him as much as possible, really. Even defeats are more tolerable if we give opportunities to players like him. At least we can see we're building towards something.

It depends on how the person in question feels. A really personal thing.

They just don't get it on here. But I bet if they were born in Azerbaijan they would call themselves English and not Azerbaijany.

Giving him game time in the first team can only help in any contract talks,oh and he should play for Belgium the place of his birth.

Looks class, and maybe Moyes has learnt his lesson about not playing Barkley last season.

Learned his lesson? Maybe Januzaj's just a better, more mature player? If he had no problems starting Rooney 17 times in 02/03 when he was just 17 then I don't see why he would hesitate to play Barkley. He clearly benefited from the loan last year even if it wasn't what the fans wanted.

Unleash the hyperbole

What are your thoughts?

Perhaps reactions are a little OTT, but his introduction was a bit special. It wasn't just the technical quality of his goals, but also the vast importance of them in the context of our season. These weren't just good strikes in the Reserves or meaningless goals as part of a big scoreline.

Spot on. So much shit being talked about Moyes' handling of Barkley - how do we know Moyes wouldn't have given him the same chances Martinez has this season?

It's very difficult to discard your ethnicity. However, that's not to say you cannot love, and respect the country of your residence - or do what is best for you as a professional.

I cannot wait until a few reasonable heads come into this thread to lecture us on how we shouldn't bow down to Januzaj and offer him more money until he proves himself more even at the expense of him leaving because it'd set a dangerous precedent.

As bad as it sounds, I think it's easier to discard if the international team in question is of marginal relevance.

People are not judging him from just this performance. Many who folllow United's youth and reserve teams have known about his talents. He was on the periphery of the first team towards the end of last season. In fact he would have got game earlier had we not been fighting for the league.

I agree with you. I must admit that I had personally never seen him play before his cameo against Sevilla in pre season, but I'd obviously heard all the good reviews on here.

I think FCBarca is being a bit sanctimonious by talking about us having hyperbolic reactions. He scored two goals away from home in a 2-1 win on his first ever start for United. That's before we even start discussing the context of our poor start to the season. Of course we're going to be excited!

That's a different debate. I don't think playing for a country as a professional takes away your connection from the country of your parents ethnicity. We've been here many decades, still we have our connections to India, and still regard myself as a British Indian.

Spot on. Watching him in the U18s and the U21s it was clear he was talented and now it's good to see he's translating that to the first team. He's handled every step-up brilliantly, making it look seamless and the thing that has always stood out for me is his belief and determination that he can affect a game and does everything in his power to do that. Doesn't let games pass him by, but always tries to be impactful and make a difference. I don't think the reactions have been hyperbolic at all.

Agreed. The lines are very much blurred. It's all going to come down to the country Januzaj feels the greatest personal affinity to - it's obviously a different situation for him because he seems to have ties to so many countries. One thing's for sure, he's not going to pick England! He'd have to wait until he's 23 to become eligible. He was born and raised in Brussels to immigrant parents - if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on him representing them.

I don't think he'll start every game regardless of how good he is. It'd be silly. He's 18 and needs to be kept hungry. Even Ronaldo at that age was used somewhat sparingly.

I'm just amazed at how far he's come on in such short time. He looked like a really good player last season, but not someone who was quite ready for the opportunities he's been given, let alone to do so well when given them.

It wasn't just the goals yesterday, it was his quality every single time he got the ball. He looked more like the only adult playing in a youth team game. Best individual performance I can remember from any United player in ages. Even before the first goal I was texting my brother saying it was as if United had borrowed Messi for a game just to get things moving...which is where his problem is now. I hope we wont al be expecting him to play to the same level every time he's picked now, because that good or not he will need patience.

Don't care which country he decides t play for at this stage, but the idea he would pick England just because he lives here now is daft. Linekar seemingly insinuating he wouldn't even have a choice to make if England were interested even more so.

I hope to god that fecking Raiola doesn't somehow get involved in this one too. I remember reading that these two are good friends.
Can't we just resign the fecker? The prospect of Pogba and Januzaj starting in our midfield for the next 12-15 years is mouth watering

I saw someone on twitter say that the away fans had a chant for him. Anyone hear it/know what it is?

He's turned down a chance to represent Belgium at youth level though and there must be a reason behind it.

Agree with that Noods.

It's going to be interesting to see how we handle this situation. On the one hand, the temptation is going to be there to play him all the time now he's made such an impact, but is that the best thing for his development? He might just be sitting there thinking he can make the Belgian World Cup squad if he could maintain that sort of performance level. But his ability to play regularly could well hinge on him signing a new deal with us - I don't see Moyes giving him game time in the new year if it's clear he's not going to sign a new deal. I'd be using the World Cup as a means of persuading him to sign this deal.

I think too many people are speculating at this stage - perhaps he just wanted to keep his options open? In any case, I think we're set to find out soon enough.

He'd have kept his options open even if he'd played for Belgium U18 or U21, these days you're free to switch countries until you've played in an official game for the senior team.

Agree that people needn't get carried away with an 18 year old and not every world class prospect becomes a world class player. But it's become undeniably obvious that he is a ludicrously talented footballer.

I saw someone on twitter say that the away fans had a chant for him. Anyone hear it/know what it is?
Am pretty sure I heard it to the tune of the old possebon song. Lets hope thats not an omen. Hopefully I was wrong!!

I agree Januzaj looks a better prospect then Barkley, but Moyes handling of Barkley last season was a joke. He fecked up in a early game and hardly played again for us. Even when he wasn't on loan and was available for selection, Moyes annoyingly refused to play him. It was an extremely frustrating situation.
