Adnan Januzaj

The one tactical problem I saw in him when he played as number 10 yesterday is that he went into the box too soon. He received the ball infront of the defense, did his bit of playmaking by making a threatening pass and ran straight into the box, if he delayed his entrance into the box and came in late ala Scholes, maybe then he could surprise the defense and score more goals. Just a thought.

At his age it's not a 'problem' as I see it. It's all about development

Oldies are the biggest hipsters around Sults.

How long before Adnan gets a bit of a break? One of my biggest worries now would be that because of his huge influence we over use the lad and burn him out.

I'm taking help from Wiki to save my dignity.

In football, the position of inside forward was popularly used in the late nineteenth and first half of the 20th centuries. The inside forwards would support the centre forwards, running and making space in the opposition defence, and, as the passing game developed, supporting him with passes. The role is broadly analogous to the "hole" or second striker position in the modern game, although here there were two such players, known as inside right and inside left.

Should be alright, I think they'll be careful with him. He didn't feature against Sociedad and only got half an hour against Stoke, so they're being reasonably sparing with him.

Scholes played in a 2 man midfield most of his career. Scholesy played a slightly more defensive role and had responsibility towards defending. Adnan was playing as a second striker or in hipster terms an attacking midfielder, or to us oldies as an inside forward. Their role would be a conduit between central midfielders and support the centre forward, making space in oppositions defence, and, generally support him with passes.

I guess Adnan was doing a lot of those things you mention, I was suggesting that a delayed entrance into the box may allow him to score more goals. I want to see him a goal threat which I didnt see much of yesterday other than taking long range shots.

Januzaj has never been much of a goalscorer since he joined the club, although he has been improving his return and I guess he's still learning how to add more goals to his game as it's the only real area he has been deficient in.

The biggest problem we have with playing Adnan or anyone else as a deep forward or a third attacking midfielder is that we then likely lose out on having a second striker. Our strongest area of the squad is strikers and I'd hate to limit it to one of them on the field at a time.

We won a CL final playing Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez together. I'm sure we can work in Persie, Rooney and Januzaj. Giggs on the left often tucked in as a third central midfielder when those three went attacking, we can employ a similar tactic.

Aye, a 433 kinda thing would work and I'd love to see it with the front three basically having a licence to roam.

RVP, Rooney and Januzaj as a front 3, that's drool worthy.

I thought that was the old name for wingers who play in close to the striker, rather than fully out wide?

Surely a winger who doesn't play out wide isn't really a winger in any shape or form? Unless you think olden days' tactics was just to play as many wingers as possible?!

Anyway, as good as Januzaj is by the end of this season you'll probably be able to make a 10 minute long video of laughably bad shots. Can't remember the last player we had who did it as consistently as he has. Ronaldo had the odd shocker but he could always strike a ball, with Januzaj it just looks like a really underdeveloped side of his game.

That worked well as we had 2 of the hardest working strikers ever in the lineup.
Not sure the circa 2013 Rooney has the same workrate as back then. And there's no one to match Tevez's either.

Januzaj works a lot harder than Ronaldo though so it probably balances out. Van Persie's never found lacking in that sense. You don't really need a Rooney-Tevez just to play someone like Ronaldo, it just so happened that we had a successful team that did.

Will he be able to do it on a cold night in Stoke?

I'll get my coat.

I don't know if anyone has said it yet but I will anyways.

Future World Player of the Year. In fact, I'll go one better and predict that he'll become WPOTY within 5 years.

Dunno about that - perhaps some Barca fans could enlighten us to how he compares to Iniesta at a similar age.

He never ceases to impress me. I know this has turned into a huge wankfest but he's really something else. I mean, he's 18 for fecks sake. He's not allowed to be this composed and intelligent on the ball!

Christ on a bike.

Yeah, shut up Don.
Christ on a bike indeed, it shouldn't take bloody 5 years.

It's okay, I said the same thing about Ronaldo.Thing is, this kid looks even more accomplished, more polished, more refined and a better reader of the game.

Yous can remember the quote and admonish it all you like. I certainly won't be shying away from repeating it or standing by it.

I said Ballon d'Or potential, but was told to be cautious. But I don't want to be with Adnan!

The world of football is littered with the broken careers of 18 year olds who had the potential to rule the world. I read that in a deep voice, full of portent. He's special. Lets just leave it at that and try to keep the heat off a little bit.

Long time I haven't seen such a good young player, since Robaldo and Rooney.

Very interesting, I didn't think he looked that good the times we stuck him up front last season for the reserves.
Same here. I'm going to guess Steve Round just made that point to stress his versatility, because I never felt he looked overly comfortable playing as a number 9 for the reserves last season.

Aside from all his ability, what sets Januzaj apart for me is his self-belief. He knows he has what it takes to affect games, and he plays with an absolute determination to do so. He isn't willing to just be a passenger and allow games to pass him by, he wants to impact them and make things happen. He always wants the ball and he's always positive in possession. Seeing him do that through the U18s and U21s (as he did) is one thing, but now that he is carrying it on in the first team, it's a joy to watch. The Old Trafford crowd actually love him. He's been that bright light in a season that has had its ups and downs. Nothing is better than seeing a kid come through from the academy and I understand the excitement even if we are getting a tad carried away (so what?!)

He doesn't look like a #9 to me but he did play well there in pre-season a couple (?) of times. I'm sure he could play this "false nine" role.

He played there against Spurs U21(which was the best U21 team last season) and absolutely ripped them to shreds. He was sensational. He definitely could play there.

I'm with The Don on this one. I think we are witnessing something special.
