Adnan Januzaj

I'm with The Don on this one. I think we are witnessing something special.

I'm so glad I bought mutv when I did. I was always envious of the older fans who got to see Giggs and co come through, now I get to witness something special from before he was famous.

People told me to calm down when I said he'll get 10-15+ appearances this year, people told me to calm down when I called him a special talent, I'm not going to have you tell me to calm down now either.

You may not agree, and that's your prerogative, but for me he's nailed on to win the young player of the year if he carries on like this all season. And barring injury, I see no reason why he won't carry on like this. He's an intelligent player, the most intelligent 18 year old I've ever had the fortune of seeing at this club, even more so than Ronaldo because he was about skill and pace.

Adnan has come into our team and seemingly given everyone a lift, he's arguably become one of our most influential players and one of our most important assets now. Of course he will have to be managed properly, and we wouldn't want to run the risk of burn out, but IMO you don't make this kind of impression and impact at this age at a club like United and not go on to win the young player of the year.

You may not agree with me, or want to wrap him up in more cotton wool than I do and that's fine, but don't tell me to calm down with my opinions on him.

Calm down!

It wasn't mean like a critique mate, I am a big fan of Adnan too. I just think that the expectations from some fans at the moment are way too high. Already we have people who are saying that he will reach the levels of Ronaldo, Best or even Cruyff which is a bit mental, considering that they are some of the best players who have ever played the game. It would be nice if he reach those levels but it's too early to even talk about it.

About the young PFA award, I think that he'll be one of the nominee, but he won't win it. Ramsey or perhaps De Gea would be the favorites to win it. It's a bit shame that the age range is so high but what to do.

Agree about his intelligence, and I don't think that it is even close. His footballing intelligence is much higher than Ronaldo when he was his age for example. If he continuees the progress he'll be our top player in 2015-2015 season.

Does anyone think the old Christmas tree formation could be the answer of fitting him and Rooney into their preferred position:

3 of Cleverley Carrick Fellaini Anderson or Kagawa
2 of Rooney Januzaj Nani or Kagawa
1 of RVP or Hernandez

I did correct myself regarding the PFA young player, Oscar will probably end up winning it if he continues to be instrumental for Chelsea or as you say Ramsey and then you'll have the likes of Townsend up for nomination so it was probably a bit silly for.me to say he's nailed on. But as far as I'm concerned, Januzaj is the true young player, I think they should change the age range and limit it to u21s.

Anyway, with regards to all this praise he's receiving, I don't think it matters if it's over the top or not. He doesn't seem to be effected by it and it's a good test for his character. From the sounds of things, we at the club are keeping him grounded and more importantly so is his dad which is fantastic.

I don't think I've ever seen this level of maturity from an 18 year old before and that's one of the key reasons (alongside his ridiculous talent of course) that makes me think he'll go on to be one of the best in the world. One of the beat of all time? We can hope, but there's no denying that he has it all in his locker to reach that bracket of player and the fact that he doesn't rely on pace makes me think he can go on like Giggs and play well into his thirties at the top level.

Is any of that guaranteed? Of course not, lets just hope he goes on to fulfil his potential and has the best career with us as possible.

Yes, it's a ridiculous rule. Should be U21 or U20 instead of U23.

And Januzaj is definitely the best U21 player in the league.

Won't ever happen, Moyes seems to love 442 just as much as Fergie did. Just when I thought we might finally see some changes :(

Yeah, you can get someone who's played top level football for 5 years end up winning it. How can they be considered a young player if they've been in the premier league for 5 years it's silly. It should be just like the reserves, u21s.

How many players have won WPOTY by the age of 23?

My only thoughts were that:
  • Our central midfield is very exposed as a 2, so why not make it a 3?
  • We have an abundance of talented players who play behind the main striker
  • Our wingers aren't playing well at the moment
It seems to be an option.

I thought so too but the problem imo isn't that Moyes fancies 442 more. I reckon it's just because we have 3 top class strikers and only 1 top class CM. That drastically limits the types of formations we can play.

Don't forget Torres, he always seems to be in with a shout, I think he was 27 when he last won it.

EDIT - He didn't win it, he was nominated when he was 24.

We could drop Rooney back into the CM in a sort of free role, play Adnan,RVP and Welbeck as the front three.

The one tactical problem I saw in him when he played as number 10 yesterday is that he went into the box too soon. He received the ball infront of the defense, did his bit of playmaking by making a threatening pass and ran straight into the box, if he delayed his entrance into the box and came in late ala Scholes, maybe then he could surprise the defense and score more goals. Just a thought.

Don't think it was a tactical problem. Januzaj is still raw and very direct. The younger verisions of Rooney and Ronaldo destroyed teams with the ball at their feet, but could be easily sussed out with organised defending and strict man-marking. Once they matured into the players that they are today, they understood that game intelligence can hurt teams the most. Combine that with their inherent footballing abilities and you have the world class footballers they are today.

Once Januzaj knows how to time his runs better and add that "pause" to his game, he will be a beast. And things like this will come with more game experience. Right now his progress has been fabulous, there is so much natural talent in him that you get the feeling that he is someone who understands how football is played. His decision-making and appreciation of space have been top class for someone his age.

I agree at Everton for the majority of time he played a 4-2-3-1, especially last season with Fellaini playing behind the striker. Also I don't really think we play a 4-4-2 but that's for another day.

Unfortunately missed the game but saw the 10 minute youtube video that had his moments in the game. As expected, really class. I love the fact how confident everyone is in him and he himself wants to show everyone what he's capable of, and doesn't get bogged down by a couple of misses on goal.

He looked a bit knackered when he was taken off so I hope Moyes uses him wisely.

I don't actually believe that Moyes is having us play this way because he loves 4-4-2 at all. I think that the reason we are playing like this is because we have two of the best strikers in the league and he wants to (has to?) fit them both in. Playing any different formation would mean asking one to play out of position or play deeper in midfield (look what hell broke loose when Fergie did that).

At Everton he tended to pack the midfield and play systems which employ a lone striker and rarely played both Jelavic and Anichebe at the same time.

I just don't think he has the freedom to try out many alternative formations whilst accommodating Rooney and RvP in their preferred positions.

As for Januzaj I doubt Moyes would play him behind the striker every game now anyway. He seems so determined to affect games no matter where he is on the pitch, which is great as our wingers have hardly been pulling up trees themselves this season, and he is allowed to drift inside a lot anyway like he did for his goals against Sunderland.

I think that will be where he plays soon enough for us anyway though.

Three:

Ronaldo in 1996 at the age of 20,
C. Ronaldo in 2008 at the age of 23 and
Messi in 2009 at the age of 22

This never fails to amaze me. What a brilliant footballer he was, I've actually met him last month in a party at Brasília.

He played there against Spurs U21(which was the best U21 team last season) and absolutely ripped them to shreds. He was sensational. He definitely could play there.

Yep, and he played there in the Fifa Youth Cup, scored all our goals and was named player of the tournament. It's not his best position but he can really play anywhere in the front four and be effective.

Yep. One of the best and most complete strikers in the history of the game.

He should be deemed the greatest human ever, not Phil Jones.

Who is clearly the second greatest.

He's a 7 to me.

Has that Swagger that the classic's have had. We need somebody to revive the shirt after the dross that Valencia/Owen gave to it.

The Old Trafford crowd actually love him. He's been that bright light in a season that has had its ups and downs. Nothing is better than seeing a kid come through from the academy and I understand the excitement even if we are getting a tad carried away (so what?!)

Hmm..

I missed the ups.
