Jens Cuypers' tweets aren't exactly promising anyway. He's basically just repeated what we already know, but this stuff about his father having a plan for him does sound ominous.

Makes it seem like we may be a stepping stone in a much bigger picture

Never heard of Bjorn De Cock, nor the website he apparently founded. Wouldn't pay much attention to his tweets.

Now this Jens Cuypers works for Gazet Van Antwerpen apparently, which is a decent newspaper. But even then I wouldn't get my hopes up too much.

He's a relative of Biggus Dickus

I would imagine the plan is to get a big contract at 21 and to keep getting big contracts until he's about 28. In that context 18-21 is all about learning his trade, enjoying the game, building his professional reputation and experience, and developing a favourable marketing image.

What it means is that he'll prize stability and the big club marketing impact, without the big club circus, that United offers. Wear a #7 for us and you're on your way. If he becomes as good as we think he might then we'll be the ones who offer him that big contract that takes him through his early 20s.

There's no point worrying beyond that. He's a footballer, which means we'd sell him if it suited us and he'll walk if it suits him.

fecking hell catching up on this thread after a weekend away, fell on Kevin's "Berry berry shrew" post, I'm in tears.

What the feck was that about? Did anyone get to the bottom of it? (can't read all the pages, I'm at work and it seriously makes me laugh too much)

hee hee hee:D you said bottom...

If they want £100k give it to them. This guy is going to be one of the top 5 or 6 players in the world in 3 years time and he'll be worth £50 mil. Just get the feckin deal to Ed

Too early to say that.

I am with everyone in believing we should do everything to keep him. However, there is a line and if his agent is playing United, we are still bigger than any player and we should stick to our guns.

Now, I'm not hearing any absurd figures, so I am not suggesting it's only about money but there is a line. I do want the club to do whatever they can to retain him but it has to be within reason.

Barca got rid of Ronaldinho, Deco et al. so Messi would have better role models (off the pitch) around him. You make allowances for the best younger players they are the future. We got rid of Van Nistelrooy because of Ronaldo and Rooney. What is 100k to United? The money it would cost to bring in a comparable talent these days makes it a pretty straightforward choice imo.

So what happenes when the next prodigy comes along and asks for £200k a week? Setting a silly precedent of offering him more than his worth is detrimental to the club and its youth policies.

As promising as he is he's not worth top wages, yet. If he gets a rise to £20k he's done very well for an 18yo.

You are both right.

Ultimately, 100k is nothing to Utd and if those figures are accurate we should be paying up. Really does depend on what the agent is looking for.

Still, it does have horrible Pogba like feeling too it....minus the greasy Mino Raiola

Would you regard 20k per week as top wages? On the open market, it would cost more (all in) to bring in a talent like januzaj.

It's all ifs and buts right now, if Utd are haggling over 20k a week and 100k agent fee then I'm disappointed. Sunderland aside, those who watch the youth/reserves have known for a while this kid was different gravy

My point had nothing to do with any of that. It's about standing up to an agent.

 What youth policies, who is the last youth player to come through and be a first team star? If Januzaj goes that will be our three brightest talents out in the last two years, that is an even worst precedent if you ask me.

Not 100k a week, as a signing on fee :smirk: as reported. We can keep saying 'we are United' and let our best talent go to prove a point but If you go and read the Pogba and Morrison threads ALL the talk is about getting them back however far fetched that is. It makes more sense to keep them, Pogba's worth about 20 million now Morrison at least 5-10 million. Januzaj has looked brighter than a few seasoned pro's so far, I doubt he will hold the club by the balls but he is in a strong position, we have Moyes who respectfully does not have Fergie's aura/respect. The best clubs have the best players and win. That is the most important part of our history.

I can't stand the 'we are United brigade at times' do you not think ALL the fans already know this.

I agree with that, but let's worry about the agent when he becomes an ACTUAL problem. If the 100k being reported as a signing on fee is true do you think that is too much?

I don't feel it is like Pogba who was not getting games and was grumbling all season before he left. These agents are weasels 9/10, we can only hope he decides to stay and furthers his development. He will get a lot of first team opportunities here, there is a spot in the stating XI for him. I'm not too worried currently.

Well first of all, I'm not taking anything I hear too seriously, I'm only hearing it from the papers and internet. There are a few people who know what is on the table. The people involved at the club, Januzaj, his agent and maybe another few people at various clubs in contact with his agent. We know nothing, the journalists are just clinging to things because there is a lot of hype.

If it did come down to a 100k, I'm not in charge of the books at United but yes, I would have no issues in giving that to him but again, who knows what the actual figure is.

I didn't Pogba like from players perspective - more the agent murmurings akin to Pogba situation.

It's clear januzaj is happy but I don't like what I'm hearing about the influence those around him have. That said, I think he'll sign a new deal quite soon.

The policy of not allowing young players and their agents dictate to the club and hold them to ransom. I find it admirable that we still have morals around this area. Give an inch and they'll take a mile. We have this polcy so we don't have our pants pulled down in negotiations in the future.

I'm sick of the comparisons with Pogba and Morrison. All different situations with different reasons why each player didn't sign. Morrison was sold for personal reasons as the club could see the negative influence his "ganster" mates were having on him, that's a comendable move by the club. Pogba demanded too much and was impatient. His refusal to commit was why Rafael and Park played in MF in that infamous Blackburn game. We refused to bend to his and his agents demands which has allowed players like Januzaj realise we will not be held to ransom. When you start allowing youth players demand what they want it opens the floodgates and it'd only be a matter of time until reserve players were making similar demands.

You think Pogba will serve as an example that the club will not be held to ransom , it was Pogba who decided to walk away, not United who refused to give him the deal!

The only example Pogba situation created was the exact opposite of that. It shows that there are other teams who are willing to give opportunities as well as more money. Some of our fans really need to step down from the moral pedestal. We already don't compete for the best players, and now some are advocating losing the biggest talents instead of getting on with the times. And as I've said again and again, who the hell cares what demands the reserve players make, if they want a contract as good as the brightest young stars, then they have to show that they are as good as them. It's not a bad precedent, but a good one. It shows that if they work hard enough, they can get as good a contract here as anywhere else, so they don't think about leaving.

These are fair points. However, sticking too rigidly to principles isn't necessarily the best way to go about it for a club like United. We could be looking at a very rare talent in young Adnan - a talent of Giggs or Scholes like proportions. My feeling is that you simply have to make an exception in such a case. Will it open the floodgates, as you say? It doesn't have to. Common sense and judgment still applies - the great majority of upcoming prospects won't be rare talents: Just because we take special measures to keep a player we consider exceptional - well, this doesn't have to set a precedent, unless that precedent is that IF you're a rare talent, you'll get an exceptional deal.

I agree with JaffyJoe that losing this lad now would set a very bad example. We can't afford to be regarded as nothing but a transition for up and coming talents: We need to be one of those clubs that actually keep their best youngsters - and I'm afraid we're going to have to cough up in order to achieve that.

If, and it's a big if, we're unwilling to give Januzaj around £20k a week because it could set a bad precedent then I hope we stop bringing in top youngsters from abroad to develop in our Academy. It's detrimental for the club to develop some of the most talented players in their age group for other clubs to take all benefits - Juventus have benefited greatly from Pogba gaining top level training here, whoever signs Januzaj if we refuse to give him a good deal will have benefited from him taking his lessons at United and there'll be a lot more in the future.

It's unthinkable for me that we won't offer him a deal as good as the other clubs would though. If we try to lowball him by offering him a £5k or £10k deal not to piss off other players who aren't as good as him then it'll be truly ridiculous, it's not going to happen.

What are you on about? Pogba turned down numerous offers as he didn't feel they were adequate. We were more than willing to give him opportunities, but when it was clear he wasn't going to commit we made the decision not to play him, rightly so.

This has nothing to do with moral high ground, it's being realistic. Januzaj has had ONE good game and a few cameos where he looked good, he is not deserved of a huge contract, yet. We've offered him terms we believe he's worth, which does break our policy slightly, so we are more than willing to reward players we belive are worth it. What constitues a good contract for a bright young star? As fans we care what players demand as we are supporters of the club. You're taking a very sheltered view of "it doesn't affect me directly, so who cares?" If some fans were incharge they'd run the club into the ground giving unwarranted high wages to potentially good players.

Regarding your last point, that is exactly what I'm advocating. But within reason, you don't just throw a huge offer at youth products as it puts you in worse situation when it comes to future negotiations. Welbeck and Cleverley should be design we stick to. A contract for around £20k a week when they first break into the first team, and dependant on their performances offer more a season later. This is the route we are taking with Adnan.

People are too anxious to get "name" to sign. With a lot of people deciding we no longer go after top talents (which is BS), they want any kind of signing, and Januzaj has become the poster boy for it.

Januzaj is 18, he has plenty of time to earn big bucks. At this stage of his career his development should be more important. We offer the development, and £20k a week isn't too shabby.

He could get the same development elsewhere. Pogba was tipped to struggle massively at Juventus and end up back in France at some obscure Ligue 1 club by most when he left, look at him now - has a move to Juventus stalled his development in any way? I'd actually say that it's done quite the opposite. United aren't the only place on Earth where people play football.

If he doesn't feel 20k a week, as an 18yo is adequate, I don't want him here, regardless of talent. I'm all for paying market value, but he's played ONE game and suddenly people are going mad and want us to offer him the earth. He seems like a down to earth lad, who has been taken under the wing of senior players so I hold a lot of hope he realises the reported terms offered are more than fair.

See Welbeck and Cleverley who signed similar contracts to that Januzay is reportedly being offered, they were given larger contracts the following season after successful first seasons with the first team.

I wouldn't blame him a single bit if we offered him something in the range of £15k - £20k and he left for someone who offered twice as much. He's a young talented lad who needs to take care of his future as well as here and now, I wouldn't hold it against him. I don't think all players who turn down United are absolute cnuts and deserve to die.

Yeah he could, I never denied that. But as a youngster would you prefer to develop at a club like United that have pedigree when nurturing young talents, or go to City (as some reports suggest) who have a reputation of signing young players, giving them huge sums and then let them rot on the bench?

The comparisons to Pogba, I'd currently place Pogba as the exception, not the rule.

In the modern game is it really that much?

We have to adapt to the market and deal with the hits you take as a result, something we refused to do in the summer.

Well that shows where his priorities lie then. He's more interested in the green. Football is littered with talented youngsters who chased the dollar too ealry and have since disappeared into obscurity.

People use the Pogba example, but at this stage I'd say he's the exception, not the rule.
