Seems like big money for a player with only a year left on his contract when, if we were to sell, we'd get less than £10M for Berba. Alright so he's much younger but Berba is a much better player, which sort of evens things out.
When one player is the best player of his team and the other couldn't get into the team at the end of the season and even into the 18 in the final of the CL, it doesn't matter that Berbatov is a 'better player'.

Ashley Young is 7th on the PL assist rate list with 0.46 assists/game, behind Giggs, Bergkamp, Cantona, Fabregas, Henry & Beckham.

Not too shabby eh?
Nani (1st - 18 assists), Rooney & Young (Joint 4th - 11 assists) were in the top 8 for assists last season.... Just saying

- Average of 10 goal per season (Well, almost)
- Great set piece taker
- Pace
- Versatility
- Never injured (almost)
- Creativity
- English
- Many assists/Good crosses
- Left winger

Do we value/need the above mentioned factors/skills?
Is Ashley Young a good signing?

Of course he is!

If Berba went to Aston Villa he'd be the best player in their team, even if Ashley Young were still there...

I love how players on here instantly go from average to world beaters just because we show an interest in them.

Agree.
There are not many in the world who are better than Berbatov in relation to what he is good at, but I argue, however, that Young's skills are much more suitable for us ATM.

At least you are sticking to your guns. An awful lot a few months ago would have scoffed at the idea but have now changed their tune.

Not blowing my own trumpet but I have been wanting this signing for a few years now at this stage

Most talented player, yes. Best player - depends if he fits their style.

It doesn't matter how good he may be, people are looking at his three years with us and they have not been huge success. Good moments, bad moments, but not huge success. And he's not at a stage where club would pay big money for potential.

Ashley Young is a pretty good signing.

He will no doubt make our squad very strong but we all know he is not the signing we really needed.

A central midfielder is top priority and we do have time left to sign one this season.

And does anyone feel we put the Young signing on hold for Sanchez but after we failed we went ahead with Young?

Nope. The deal was probably done weeks ago!
We will still get our central midfielder...

I don't think anybody is claiming Ashley Young to be a world beater. We are simply showing support for our new player and recognising the positive qualities he could bring to our team. It's a shame others can't.

Ashley Young is far from average, if that is the implication resounding in this crazy thread.

There is some right nonsense written on these boards.

Yep. I personally wasn't too bothered at all about us signing him, but it seems we have. So may as well get behind him rather than moaning about him not being Sanchez, settling for second best, we should have spent the money on a top central midfielder etc. He does have obvious qualities and we might as well look forward to what he can bring to us. Fergie thinks we need him, who are we to argue?

He's not a world beater, but he's a solid Premiership player who's shown he's capable. He'll come to United and play with better players and improve his own game as players we sign usually do.

I don't see why there's any need to be negative or downbeat about the transfer really.

15,622 – Since the 2006/07 season, Sylvain Distin is the only outfield player to have played more PL minutes than Ashley Young.

44 – Since the start of the 2006/07 season, only Cesc Fabregas (60) has made more PL assists than Ashley Young (44).

I don't understand the point in signing Ashley Young. It's almost up there with spending £20million on Owen Hargreaves.
Here's a few pointers.

Any idea when we'll see him in the United kit? Surely we can show Jones and Young off soonish.

The thing is Young had all these same stats last year and the year before.

Yet the vast majority of the caf didnt think he was all that great till he started playing well for England in recent months

Its true a lot of people are fickle, but you could say they are just being positive and giving him a chance to be as good as they are making out

There is certainly a fickle nature about some, but his England performances at least show that he's capable of doing it at a higher level. And when you consider that a lot of England players don't exactly cover themselves in glory then it makes him hard to ignore.

I think his form for England opened a fair few peoples eyes somewhat. I've always thought of him as a good winger but I'd have never had him down as a potential transfer target I'll be honest.

My brother is over the moon with us getting him. Always been a fan of his and always said he as a very good player.

People who think Young is average clearly know nothing about what they are talking about.

He'll finally get the stage to show just how good he is...

I just find it funny how quickly people's opinions will change on here. Fair dues if you've wanted us to sign him for a while.

If Liverpool had signed Young there'd be people in here laughing about it.

Fergie spent about £8million on a player he'd never seen play last year, who turned out not to be very good. His transfer muppetry is hardly beyond questioning.

I don't see why there's any need to be negative or downbeat about the transfer really.

Because I don't understand the point. We already score loads of goals and set up loads of chances, and we already have to leave people on the bench who are very good at doing this. One or two of whom are better players than Ashley Young. We also have to send promising looking players on loan who can do this job, because we have too many of them already.

Meanwhile we've not replaced our best midfielder, despite our midfield being a huge problem last season AND the season before, when he was still around.

It's not like Young's an exciting 19 year old either. He's nearing his late twenties.

Just because I don't think it's a very wise signing doesn't mean I wont support him or want him to do well.

I just don't understand what's worth getting excited about. It's Ashley Young. It's like going to a Sports Car sale and buying a Ford Escort.

After seeming to be standing still for a couple of years, Young has really developed in the last 2 years or so. One of the few English qualified players with, I call it, "Barca style technique" who's starting to stamp his athority in games.
He should even develop to the next level playing alongside better players than he was used to at Villa. I also have it on good athority that a whole host of big European clubs were after him (not just in the EPL) but he chose United.
In other words, this should be a really top signing for us.

A word of warning, Playing at United is different from Villa. Being a good player does not guarantee he'll make it at OT.

Since when is 25 nearing your late 20s? I suppose he is nearing his early 30s, too, when you put it like that.

We've signed him for feck all, for a start

He'd also a better player than Park, Oberalien, Baby or Not-too-cleverley
The only one of those who gets near our team is Park, and he does a different type of job to Young, and I'd suspect is better at it than Young would be.

How would Young have improved us this season for example? What games would have turned out differently if we'd had Ashley Young at our disposal?

Honestly I prefer playing Park instead of Young. But right when Giggs retired we probably need 4 quality wingers. Nani, Valencia, Park and Young will do.
