A Tribute to Roy Hodgson - his LFC legacy in quotes

Are Mancs still trying to claim Hodgson did a good job at Liverpool?

This penny is taking an awfully long time to drop.

No. But it seems Liverpool fans won't let the situation go.

Bitter threads like this one for example. He's gone. You have "the king" in charge (or whatever it is you call him while bumming a life size rubber doll of him). Move on.

But you lot are still being bitter about him. Heaven knows why. He did a bad job and he is gone. What's the big deal? Happens in the world of football all the time.

Bitter? Me? Not a chance.

If he was still an Anfield, it maybe a different story though..

No, he didn't earn the opportunity. There is absolutely nothing in his cv to suggest he was ever up to the job of managing such a big club, where your every word & movement are scrutinised by the media. It's all very well spending most of your footballing life in 2nd rate countries, winning the occasional 2nd rate competition, & being patronised by the English press. & The only people who didn't question his appointment are the mugs on here who haven't got a fecking clue about life outside of OT.

We may have not had too many choices. & Hodgson may have been the best of a bad bunch. But don't kid yourself that this man was ever worthy of such a challenging position.

2nd rate countries? You Liverpool fans are coming out with some shite while carrying on with all this lingering bitterness.

You also conveniently ignored most of my post.

You can say what you like but most people expected him to move on to a bigger job on the back of his European success with Fulham. As I say, he got the job but not the resources which I find a sad situation while you'd rather shower him with insults while patronising the countries in which he worked before. Each to his own, I suppose.

Why is it that some United fans are so keen to defend Hodgson like he was a dear friend? He was dreadful at Liverpool, and it was no surprise given his lack of credentials. It's bloody obvious.

to be fair, I'm not too sure who Baldwin supports

and redwood admits to supporting two different clubs in the same league

I don't rate the man and toe poke has been very objective

so you can't generalize

edit- just read the some part

In a thread started by a Scouser about Hodgson in a United forum?

fecking priceless.

They can't. If Hodgson wasn't solely responsible for Liverpool's problems, that means something else may be wrong. So, they've got to let loose with the attacks. It's just part of the denial of reality that the squad isn't as good as they believe it to be.

Here's his career, which is apparently shit and shows he can't motivate players.

1976: Coach, Halmstads in Sweden, won 2 championships.
1981: Coach, Orebro, Sweden.
1982: Manager, Bristol City.
1983: Coach, Malmo, Sweden, won five successive championships and two cups.
1990: Coach, Neuchatel Xamax.
1992: Coach, Switzerland, inc 1994 World Cup, 1996 European Championship.
1996: Coach, Internazionale of Milan, reached 1997 Uefa Cup final. Fired with Inter in 3rd.
1997: Manager, Blackburn Rovers, 6th in first season.
1998: Technical director, Internazionale.
1999: Coach, Grasshoppers, Switzerland.
2000: Coach, FC Copenhagen. won Superliga championship
2001: Coach Udinese, dismissed in Dec. after claiming he wanted to leave.
2002: Coach United Arab Emirates national coach
2004: Coach Norwegian club Viking
2005: Coach Finland.
2007: Coach Fulham. Club's highest ever finish. Europa League final.
2010: Coach Liverpool - 6 months in charge.

Interesting career. One of the few English coaches who has gone beyond the shores of the UK.

My problem was more with the term '2nd rate countries'...

I'm Danish and have no problem admitting the Danish league is secondrate. The current FC Copenhagen team is the only side in almost 20 years with anything approaching European pedigree. And they are miles ahead of anyone else.

The other Scandinavian leagues are worse still.

What do you consider Italy?

Hodgson did a poor job, but it wasn't his fault. He wasn't able to spend to get better players, and whoever was already there weren't willing to play for him. He was doomed to fail.

If the players had given the kind of support they're showing Daglish now, he would have done much better. His credentials weren't poor, but Liverpool was definitely a step up. It could've worked if he had been given the support, but now we'll never know.

nothing to brag about

Honestly, I feel like most of those quotes were actually reasonable honest assessments.

You can see he is optimistic at the start, but slowly he is crushed by the giant black hole of suck that is Liverpool.

Of course in the world of fandom where you are supposed to say the opposite of what you mean he is going to get slammed by fans ;p

=BaldwinLegend;9329888]2nd rate countries? You Liverpool fans are coming] out with some shite while carrying on with all this lingering bitterness.

You accuse me of being insulting & patronising to the countries Hodgson has worked in. How do you feel about his comments a couple of months back to a Scandinavian journalist who had the audacity to question his tactics ?

Hodgson: " Are you from Denmark ?"

Journo: "No, Norway"

Hodgson: "Ah, two countries I never want to work in again"

I'm sure that endeared him to the countless number of Scandinavian fans that spend good money in following Liverpool FC.

The shite written on this thread comes exclusively from those who still can't see that this man is average at best. If Hodgson hadn't been English, then his record in those other countries wouldn't have meant feck all to anyone over here. But all of a sudden, he takes over Fulham, gets them a highly respectful 7th place. & the following season he takes them to a Europa final. Then suddenly, after 30 years in football management, he's good enough to take over a big club like Liverpool - Well, Bobby Gould took Wimbledon to 7th place in 1988, & also won the FA Cup the same season. Yet I doubt very much he was on the short-list when we were looking for a new manager a few years later.

Well you weren't as shit then as Benitez had made you before Woy took over.

Something which I don't understand is Liverpool supporters trying to convince everyone that Woy is a massive twat. Funnily enough they can only come up with about two or three examples, including the one above, which have been tirelessly recycled. I've heard that one about the Scandinavian journalist about 20 times at this stage.

This standing in stark contrast to the hundreds of moments, stories and testimonies where we've seen him demonstrate that he is a gent and a generally nice guy. 'Kinell, we all have our bad days. 63 years old and you can pinpoint less than half a dozen incidents of him being at worst a bit grumpy.

These being largely the same people that call Rafael Benítez a gentleman and a scholar.

I don't think any Liverpool fan on here has called Roy a 'massive twat'. Just not the brilliant manager that some on here perceive him to be.

I used the Scandinavian journo quote because I was accused of being insulting & patronising to the countries that Hodgson had worked in. But it seems OK for Roy to do likewise - Our former manager was a PR disaster. You only have to read the OP to see that. I think we deserve a lot of credit actually for not referring to him as a 'massive twat'

I'm not specifically referring to this thread, I've heard it said in several arguments where someone points out that Roy is a nice guy and doesn't deserve the abuse that's come his way and a Liverpool fan replies something along the lines of, "He's not really nice at all, he's a horrible person - don't believe everything the media tells you. Look, he was horrible to this Scandinavian journo!!!1122!"

Yes he was a PR disaster and did a poor job at Liverpool, and note I'm not specifically talking about this thread here merely expanding on a point that came up, but that doesn't excuse the bile that's come from most Liverpool fans towards a decent bloke who was out of his depth.

You'll never walk alone? Pfft.

I think B9's vermin rant summed it up quite spastically.

Well, Liverpool were a 'challenging for Europa league' side going downhill when they recruited him, so...

I agree, but they are a big club and they want a manager that can guide them forward not take them down further which is what Roy was doing

If I sent out that CV to Liverpool, I wouldn't expect to get the job

his cv is nothing compared to the top managers in world football

shite clubs like Fulham and west brom is his level

wum.

I laughed at you because anyone who says getting two different teams to European Finals and winning several championships, regardless of the league, is nothing to "brag about" is ridiculous.

You're trying so fecking hard to discredit a man who has had a good career that it's insane.

several shitty championships, big deal

With regards to the finals, I've never seen somebody given so much credit for not winning as Roy

even steve got boro to the uefa final

it's nothing to brag about, but I've seen Roy brag

What's taking longer is you realising that the people who feel Hodgson was shafted over by your club extend far beyond 'Mancs'.

Shafted? Shafted? For sacking him after he proves he can't do the job by getting us into a relegation battle in 6 months, then paying him off with a few mill. I'm not sure you know the meaning of shafted.

In the end the manager is responsible.

But your players should be ashamed. They got paid and gave the manager and the club shit.

Where was the desire and effort? They disgraced the shirt.

I'm guessing you feeling equally as sorry for Rafa Benitez at Inter then?

He clearly earnt the opportunity - very, very few questioned it at the time.

Look at the resources other managers at similar sized clubs have - look at what Redknapp has to work with at Spurs, look at the resources that welcomed Mourinho and Mancini into big jobs, look at the resources Wenger and Ferguson enjoy. Hodgson had the same pressure but none of the same resources.

Of course Hodgson was shafted - he was given a huge job in such hard up, chaotic and dysfunctional circumstances that he probably ended up wishing he'd been offered that other poisoned chalice - the England job. If he had been, I'd wager even that would have been destined to end better from the start, and that's saying something.

What money he did have to spend, he spent on Brad Jones, Christian Poulsen and Paul Knochesky, while shipping Insua and Aquilani out on loan after complaining the squad isn't big enough. Not exactly starting off on the right foot eh?

You need certain things to turn around a club in the situation Liverpool were in.

Time
Support of players
Support of fans
Sustained investment

In fairness to Hodgson, he had none of those things.

He had the support of the players and fans to start with. He quickly lost both however.

I agree he didn't have time or investment. Luckily..
