Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

From the little I have seen of the trailers, I am not too impressed with the Oberyn casting. Doesn't look like someone who can bring that Gregor-Oberyn duel to life and it would be disappointing if the show fails to nail that scene.

You raped her. You murdered her. You killed her children.

Just read that they've cast 3 porn stars for this season? Any truth to this?

They've already cast 2 porn stars (one of them a relatively big character) so wouldn't be too much of a leap.

Is there any word on the 6th book? Wasn't the release date said to be 2014?

I am in the process of re-reading the books and yesterday read the part of Red Wedding. It was both as sad and as amazing as during the first time.

Okay, I asked this before but because I was retarded I asked it in the tv show thread. If I jump into this series straight from book three, will I be lost?
You won't. The show has done a very good job on that.

However, you might not understand some little things and likely you won't know half of the minor characters. My suggestion is to read all the books.

Another thing, I would highly recommend to not post in this thread before you finish the books because we don't put things in spoilers and you can easily get spoiled in as big things as the Red Wedding. PM me or one of the other regulas here instead.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have tried reading the books previously but I can't get sucked in, knowing what's going to happen, which is why I asked that question. As for the posting in the thread thing, it was just a one off and I made sure not to read any of the posts, but I won't be posting in this thread again in the near future. Cheers.

I didn't see that coming When I read the books. It broke my heart again when I saw it in the show. The Starks are the good guys and they've been through so much :(

Mountain v Viper in 8 and Battle at the Wall in 9. 10 should then be Tyrion killing Tywin and the CoF showing up.
Usually the big event is at the end of episode 9 so maybe they'll have Tyrion killing Tywin then.

Also can't wait for the Stoneheart reveal.

What do people think about the new cast of Dario? I mean he is still not what I imagined from the books but I think a much better fit then the beardless one who was just weird.

I also like the Oberyn cast even though I imagined him with longer hair somehow and probably more Italian themed then middle east as they appear now even though in the books the are probably a mix out of both.

:nono: There isn't such a thing as good guys in this saga. Personally, I wasn't very found of them anyway (except Snow and Arya). Ned, Robb and Catelyn were morons of the highest order, and while their death was a sad moment, it was always going to happen considering their mistakes (especially on the case of Robb/Catelyn).

But yeah, the part of not seeing it was amazing. Even on re-read it felt like they are completely safe until the thing happened. The moment Roslin and Edmure go away from the main stage, Freys change their face expression and start playing 'The Rains of Castamere' is the first moment you realized that the shit is happening indeed. Even then, GRRM gives you hope when a few Northmen open the door and come inside (you say, thanks the Lord they are going to survive after all) and then immediately slain Greatjon and you realize that they are Bolton's men who have been working together with Freys during the entire time. Magnificient part of the book fro Martin.

However, I was more saddened from Oberyn's death which IMO is the highlight of the entire saga. When he got killed, I felt completely devastated which is kind of strange considering that he was introduced only 300 pages or so earlier.

Yeah I was so pissed when Oberyn died. It was all set up for a glorious revenge against the Mountain.

"You raped her. You murdered her. You killed her children."

Why can't you give us a good thing for once GRRM!

Also, did anyone notice Shae telling Sansa to eat the 'pigeon pie'?

I preferred the old Dario so far. This one is too... normal. He's too much like any Westerosi mercenary. He's supposed to be a character. It's just been one episode, so I haven't given up on him yet.

Did you really consider the Dornish in the book to be Italian themed? I always had them pegged as vaguely Mediterranean, and more Spanish/Moorish than Italian. I don't think there are all that many similarities between what we know about Dorne from the books and historical Italy, although you could find some for Southern Italy I'm sure.

Still, really happy with Oberyn, and really happy with the episode.

Yes they recast Dario for this season. A much better cast this time I feel.

I also feel the guy they cast for Oberyn does a pretty good job with this character.

All around a pretty great first episode.

I'd delete this post in the other thread if I were you, NoLogo. It doesn't really give anything away, but talking about the books or how characters are "supposed" to be is a big no-no.

Best just not post there at all.

Yeah alright Spanish would probably have been a good fit as well. I just thought the whole frivolous thing and not ashamed of the sexuality stuff sounded a lot like Italian culture to me but there is a hint of Spanishness in it with their severe sense of pride and honor.

Of course that's one of the tricks Martin uses, he takes traits that we attributes primarily to certain cultures and mixes them together to create a new culture that still feels familiar. I quite like that.

Joffrey getting killed is as good as it can get. Until on that moment GGRM was on the dark side, but after it he started a massive cull on Lannisters (and a few others).

Yeah, he's good at creating believable cultures with traits from real life cultures. That's what I loved about Robert Jordan as well. There were no carbon copies, but similarities between several.

Did I post that there as well? Actually trying to not give any talk about the book in there, so sorry if I did. It's difficult to post in two threads at once, maybe I'll just stick to the book thread to avoid further mix ups.

@niMic at the topic of Dario. I think the looks of the actor fit much more into what I imagined Dario to be, well at least he has a beard even though it's not blue and his mustache is not yellow. But the actor doesn't seem to be putting enough boldness into this character, he should be as insolent as Bronn but a bit more charming I feel also a bit more temper could have done him well. Instead of having a "hold up contest" with Grey Worm they might have had a fight or something like that.

Wasn't Sandor supposed to get pretty badly hurt in that bar fight?

Yeah. That fight and him dying after it are the only things left in ASOS for those two, so they must have made up something else for them to do for the season. Maybe they'll meet the Mountain. Would be a good way to help set up the fight with Oberyn.

Unless he's the gravedigger guy.

Considering the fact that Joffrey is by no means in real power, it is not a straight forward "good" thing. Everybody knows that it is Cercei and Tywin (and Jaime) who pulls the strings. Apart from those, even the Vassals of the Lannisters seems to have more power than the king.

I'd say they have been doing a pretty poor job of pulling the strings. It's not like Joffrey is powerless (or blameless) in all of this either. He was still the king, and he still managed to do some shitty stuff. Like having Ned killed, which was completely contrary to what they had planned. So I'd say it's a bit strong to say "by no means in real power".

He killed Ned for a start, and is also a massive twat. I would not say that Cersei has more power than him, he was very uncontrolable. Of course, Tywin is the Lannister boss.

Anyway Lannisters now are nothing. Tywin, Joffrey and Kevan dead, Cersei soon to be humiliated, Jaime not caring that much for them anymore (and probably going to be executed from Catelyn) and possibly Tommen and Mycella will get killed soon. Soon enough, they'll be completely insignificant.

Tyrells on the other hand are the real deal and have replaced them in everything. Until Danny comes, of course.

End? Sandor isn't dead in the books.

Probably.

Yeah well bad wording here. It's only Thoros who say they (Brootherhood without banners) gave him the "gift of mercy" so technically we don't know for certain that he is dead. Of course the "sightings" of the hound aren't really prove he is alive either because people only ever see his helm. I suspect that the red priest might not have lied about that they gave him the "gift of mercy" but he might not have said the whole truth either because as we know people who die around Thoros of Myr don't always stay dead.
