Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

Yep.

I think a main issue about the show running for say, 6-7 seasons is the child actors will be too old for their book counterparts. The actor who plays Bran is going through puberty right before our eyes. Arya/Sansa are also growing up faster than the books. The actress who plays Sansa is absolutely beautiful, I must say.

What you have quoted above actually doesn't say that they know how the story ends. They just said they talked about the importance of characters and if they are taking them in the right direction seeing that they changed some of the stuff about characters if you compare it to the book. They probably only got told which characters they could kill without running into any problems later in the story.

I'm also sure GRRM has already written down the plot outlines for the entire story and should he really die before he can finish the books the producers of the series would have a way of knowing how to finish the show.

I just think it would be a big mistake to let the show finish before the last book is out but then of course I don't have to watch it if I want to read the books first, still would be very weird if the TV adaptation would actually finish before the source material would be released.

Why are the books so brilliant?

This is not standard fantasy. There as been very little magic involved so far. The closest any other piece of work comes GRRM's style is probably Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy, and even that has a wizard as one of its POVs. The standard elements are all missing - 5 books into the series, we don't even know who the protagonists are, the setting is woefully limited, the theme morbidly dark, the characters we love end up dead, and there is not even one place of peace in all seven kingdoms where we could find solace from. Reading the books (or watching the TV series) actually seems masochistic at times.

Then why do we do it?

I've had only two explanations so far, and they're not convincing enough.

One, never before have characters had such depth in any series. There are literally scores of characters having active character arcs. You could choose any of them to scrutinize, and each one would be justified in all their actions in accordance with their arcs. You just cannot find any inconsistency at all, and that doesn't usually happen in other works - usually there are always flaws. GRRM's characters are almost real.

Two, the Game of Thrones is being played well. Whether it is because of the sheer number of characters, or the varying no. of 'sides' you can choose in battle, it is all very intricately woven. A complex web of plot threads, but each time there's one strand pulled, the others move in perfect tandem. It is almost like poetry, the way the links work.

The main thing that fascinates me about the books is how detailed and alive the whole world feels and of course the amazing characters. I also like the fact that "magic" is more something that is in the background and that the characters, the history of the world and it's politics are the main aspect of the books which make this whole world seem so amazingly alive to me.

Despite the infrequent use of "magic" one of the few times it's been used- shadow baby assassin, has been one of the worst and most ridiculous moments in the series.

I didn't mind it at all. I think it served its purpose extremely well, in that it shows that there certainly is something behind the Red God's power (something which we hadn't seen from any of the other supposed gods at this point), and that it was something that only very few people understood, and even fewer could wield.

I think the most important thing about magic in ASoIaF is that it's beyond the comprehension of the vast majority of characters, which is why it's very existence is met with much skepticism. Events like shadow-baby-assassin serve as a very harsh reminder that it is real and it is very dangerous. It's entirely feasible that a simple ward would have kept the sba away, but because barely anyone even believes in magic, one wasn't used.

Indeed. The only time we come close to hearing about magic first-hand and in a truly knowledgable way is through Melisandre in one chapter, and even then it's somewhat of an intangible thing.

The fact that it takes such a back-seat in general, and that there's no cut-and-dry light vs dark tropes is what fascinates me and makes me more keen than I am on most fantasies. You get to go inside the heads of both sides and find that there are reasons for why people are the way they are and why they act the way they do.

Its taking me longer to read 'Feast for Crows' than it has all the other book put together, I just can't get into it. I really want to get it finished so I don't spoil anything with the new tv series, does it get better? Im about a third of the way in.

I wa the same, ended up just looking at an in depth summary for that... Just could not get through it.

It was the hardest to read of all the books I found. Now as far as the TV show goes it will be interesting to see how they handle season 4, since in reality books 4 and 5 (Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons) actually take place at the same time just with different characters. So it might be that for anyone not having finished ADWD they might have things spoiled by the TV show.

Here is one attempt to place the chapters of both books in chronological order

I there's perhaps a few too many Cersie chapters (and Brienne perhaps) in A feast for Crows but I liked the whole Iron Islands and Dorne part of the storyline. Dance with Dragons was a hell of a lot more frustrating to read imo.

I liked more Dance with Dragons. For two reasons:

1) On the end of the book it happened something. I also must say something big. Varys pretty much showing his face which everybody was expecting anyway, the Lannisters being practically completely defeated with Ser Kevan's death and with soon to be Cerseis public humiliation and possibly Jaime's death in the hand on Catelyn, Snow dying (?), Stannis going into open war with Boltons and finally the hope that Danny after all may control Drogon. All these things happened in the last 200 pages or so (when the geography got united again), but on the first book happened almost nothing.

2) Most of my favorite characters were on it. Tyrion, Snow, Arya, Daenerys. The only one who wasn't there and has an interesting story is Jaime.

Yeah, things picked up in the the last 100 pages or so but for most of the book it was a drag. The only parts I found interesting were the Davos chapters and a few of the reek chapters. The Dany and Tyrion chapters were especially boring (and Tyrion is my favourite character). And I can't say I found all the happenings at the wall all that intriguing either. That said, I think both the books portray the forced and uneasy peace (both in Westeros and in slavers bay) quite well until everything explodes in WoW.

I enjoyed the Tyrion chapters, Danys we're a drag though. Re-reading it I couldn't wait for the fighting pits chapter, only time she does anything. The Victarion stuff is pretty good though.

A Feast for Crows is easily the slowest of the books, I didn't mind the Dorne stuff, and the Cersei stuff was alright, but I was sick of the Iron Islands by the end of it.

Not gonna read any of the excerpts.

I will need a huge catch up before the next book though. I've forgotten everything.

There weren't many Iron Islands chapter though and 2/3 had plenty of Euron Greyjoy in it who's a great character. The kingsmoot chapter was great.

Looking back, I think the main problem was probably Brienne. She was out on a quest, which we as readers knew was going to be futile.

I actually quite enjoyed the Iron Islands chapters. Euron is creepy, and like you say the Kingsmoot was interesting.

I didn't have a problem with Feast of Crows, it was good, just not at the level of the other books.

I guess that answers the age old question of whether you are just clueless about football, or if there are other areas as well.

You're basically a shit WUM.

 I was thinking that too. Although he has been improved on Football Forums recently.

Okay, I just played the Game of Thrones mod to Crusader Kings II for the first time in a long while (also haven't played CK2 in a while), and it's... great. Last time I played they only had Westeros. I played as Daenerys, defeating Yunkai, then working on New Ghis. Then I married Tyrion and gave him a dragon. Then Aegon managed to take the Iron Throne. A few months later I assassinated him, and now Daenerys sits on the Iron Throne since she was his heir - oh yeah, and Tyrion is King of the Westeros. Somehow I don't think that's how it's going to go in the book.

There's just so much... stuff... in this mod.

They're hinting so much at the Purple Wedding more than they did for the Red Wedding, no way anyone who's been listening to the cast' interviews doesn't suspect something big is probably going down there.

You're the biggest nerd on here.

I'm looking forward to the reaction to the Purple Wedding more than I did for the Red Wedding.

Just read that they've cast 3 porn stars for this season? Any truth to this?

Seems like episode 10 will be a proper finale this season. Judging by what should happen in episodes in 9 and 8.

I'm guessing Tyrion shooting his daddy on the pooper.

Considering from the reviews of the first three episodes I've seen, it is said that the Oberyn-Dorne "sexuality" thing is amped up a lot and blown out of proportion probably meaning loads of gratuitous sex, I wouldn't be surprised if this was true

Well we are talking about HBO here. Will they try to pack as much sex and nudity in every episode as possible? Of course.

I just don't want them to turn Dorne- when it is eventually introduced, into the city of orgies and everyone humping each other
