Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

I've finished reading game of thrones. Sansa is very unlikeable and Tyrion is my favourite character so far followed by Arya.

Is it safe to watch Season 1 of the tv show now or does that involve the 2nd books as well?

Season 1 is entirely based on A Game of Thrones and doesn't have any part from A Clash of Kings so it's safe to watch it.

Well feck me, just getting to the end of ASOS and didn't see that coming.

Oh man just read on the wikipedia page from asoiaf that Martin plans to for the last two books with 1500 pages each. fecking hell we will end up with probably 3000 pages if his estimating abilities haven't improved significantly since the last two books. I just hope he finishes at least one book within the next 3-4 years and we don't end up with 9 instead of 7 books.

There are a couple of elements from the 2nd book, but nothing major (from memory)

I am half way through a storm of swords, resisting the temptation to read this thread.

I hate Sansa a lot more than I should, I hope someone kills the whining little bitch soon

Martin doesn't really do likeable female characters. Most of them, imho, are annoying as feck, including Ygritte, Arya, Sansa, even Brienne (no sense of humour, so fecking stubborn). Cersei is meant to be hated of course but that's irrelevant. Margaery is probably a devious little cnut who only shows her true colours when Cersei accuses her - though she's not a point of view character so doesn't really belong here. Asha... ok, she's all right. Melisandre... well religious fanatics have never been my cup of tea. And the less said of Lady Catelyn and Lady Lysa, the better.

I find Brienne likeable, and even though Arya's story has stagnated a little I still think she's great.

Sansa is going to kick ass soon, I can feel it. She's not the stupid little girl that she was, think she has a big part to play.

Martin has been hailed for writing excellent female characters. The majority of readers love Arya. You just don't like female characters as much as males. Tell me what male character you like (besides mr. Honor himself) and I'll give you a reason for that character being annoying and/or a cnut.

That's pretty much how I see it there are no shining heroes or completely likable characters in asoiaf, apart from Tyrion maybe.

I found that almost every characters has certain likable and certain annoying or hate able characteristics to them and I think that is one of the major reasons these books are so good.

Oh and who is "Mr. Honor himself"? Ned Stark? He was probably one of the most annoying characters of all, I hate overly honorable characters the most, John Snow is almost equally annoying.

Yes Ned Stark. He's definitely a fan favorite. Especially after having been played by Sean Bean. Doubt Tywin would be as generally liked if it weren't for his portrayal by Charles Dance. Having finished reading the books 2 years ago and watching every episode after that I can't even remember how he was like in the books. I know it's not the same.

Well I'm not saying they're BAD characters or that they don't have depth. To me, however, they're not very likeable. Arya is stubborn to the point of idiocy, all too often and her saying/thinking "stupid" all the time rivals Ygritte's "you know nothing" in terms of annoyance factor. I liked the Lady Olenna and Arianne Martell (and the Sand Snakes as well though they aren't really fleshed out apart from being mean motherfeckers). Sansa's finally getting somewhere hopefully, I like her much more since she's become Alayne.

My favourite character of the entire series is probably Tyrion but please don't start listing all the reasons why he's a cnut, the thread doesn't need a post that rivals War and Peace for length.

Arya is a fecking kid. Of course she's stubborn. You think she's going to be wise? Now what would that be like? She's not like her brother with those Jedi powers so she's going to be more of a Han Solo than a Luke.

I feel like people very easily forget the ages of certain characters. They are extremely relevant. Where would Dany be without advisors? fecked, both literally and figuratively.

Having read the first book, I can say I found Ned Stark annoying and infuriating

Exactly. He was honorable to the point of idiocy. What a fecking brilliant idea to not immediately put Cersei under immediate arrest but give her the time for a counter attack? I hate just like when the heroes refuse to kill the villain because they want to prove they are better than them and as a result get someone good killed.

John Snow is pretty much the same in that regard they both seem to be blind to the depth of scumbagery they have to deal with and assume if they behave honorable and just other people will respect that and don't exploit it.

.

That was my thinking as well. He's not an unlikeable character by any means but not the sort of character I like

Jon is far more ruthless and willing to bend than Ned. He sacrificed Gilly's baby for one thing. Plus he went against tradition and had wildlings man the Wall. Jon is honourable but he's also expedient.

Yeah of course he isn't really a bad guy just an honorable fool.

The perfect mix would probably be someone who is as caring and honorable to his family and subordinates as Edard Stark but as ruthless and cunning as Tywin Lannister when it comes to dealing with his enemies but of course a character like that would not really fit the mold of there being no perfect characters in asoiaf.

Don't read if you haven't progressed past the first three books:

Yeah since he has been with the wildlings he changed somewhat but until that point his "daddy complex" and being all bend on his "honor" as a Stark was pretty annoying and of course since he has become the lord commander of the nights watch he seems to have taken on a mentality of doing what ever needs to be done to defend the wall.

Isn't that Tyrion more or less?

Roger Ashton-Griffiths cast as Mace Tyrell.

Which means Mark Gatiss is playing somebody else. Damphair maybe?

So the lot is in Iceland filming season 4. Both Brianne and the Hound are here. Arya as well. Which means Iceland is partly going to be the Vale as well? Last year it was just the behind the Wall folk.

That's interesting. I wonder if they'll invent a little storyline involving Arya and the Hound meeting Brienne. There's not much for any of them to do if they just stick to the book.

Doubt it, I'd say they'll keep Brienne at kings landing for a while as her presence will help lead on Jaime's character development. I imagine the'll draw out the Brienne/Loras dispute for a while.

I wonder if Locke might be wandering around the Riverlands? They need some kind of threat for Arya and and The Hound to avoid and I can't think of anything else for Locke to do.

The Mountain has been recast for the third time, Hafþór Björnsson, a 6' 9" tall Icelandic strongman is playing him.

http://winteriscoming.net/2013/08/mountain-recast/

They've also recast Daario Naharis, not sure why though.

Hafþór Björnsson is huge. He's one of the world's strongest men. Dude was in that category many years ago and he's my age. He's got a monopoly on the strongest man in Iceland competition which hasn't been done since Jón Páll.

He must have been approach though. I don't think he has any acting experience but that hardly matters as the Mountain won't speak.

I'm happy with the Dario recasting. That guy who played him was nothing like the book's description.

Thank feck they recast Dario. He was annoying and a terrible actor.

He does have a couple of important lines to say though.

With a helmet on, presumably. They can easily make that work Darth Vader style.

I am not happy they recast Daario, though. I know some people hated him, but I actually liked the way he portrayed the character. It's also going to be a bit of a continuity issue for most viewers, considering how heavily he was featured. I think that points pretty heavily towards other reasons for his removal than acting ability. He always did have a bit of a shady reputation/past.

Finally finished reading this monster of a series. Overall it was brilliant even if a little slow

That said Dance with Dragons is probably a couple of 100 pages longer than it needed to be. Tyrion pretty much does nothing in the book despite having plenty of chapters. Danny is just a moaning idealist and should have heeded Barristan and set sail for Westeros. All the Starks left alive feel completely disconnected from the main storyline. We haven't even seen or heard about Rickon for 2 books now. Really hope Tyrion and the Starks are more actively involved in the next book (Well, Sansa can die for all I care).

Loved the Reek/Theon and Davos chapters though. Highlight of the book for me. Also I love the whole Dorne plotline continued from the last book. Didn't think Doran Martell was all that interesting initially but I reckon the whole Dorne/Aegon plot is going to be great.

From the bits I have read on the forums, the 3 heads of the dragons are likely to be Aegon, Dany and Jon (If he's alive that is).

And how the feck is GRRM going to finish this in 2 books? Is there going to be a 5 year gap or something? And I hope he doesn't die anytime soon either:nervous:

On other news, Martin now is working on 'The Princess and the Queen' which will be a prequel of ASOIAF. I don't know if it is a part of 'Tales of Dunk and Egg' or it is a prequel to them. I think the later one is more likely to be considering that it will talk about the Targaryan civil war, and Tales of Dunk and Egg is a few decades after it.

It seems that Martin is interested on writting everything except to continue working on ASOIAF. I am really worrying that he won't finish this saga at all, be it for just overdelaying it forever or something even worse.
