Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

If you think Martin is bad for spending far too long describing irrelevent nonsense then you should read some of the Wheel of Time novels. ASoIaF is virtually concise in comparison.

Oh and there was a distinct lack of Catelyn in the last book, even though we know she's alive. Hopefully this is addressed in the next book too.
I hope she's re-dead in the next book.
Didn't miss her at all when she died. Annoying character when she was alive. Though as a revenge focused zombie like creature she may be better

This. It was a desperate attempt to make her a enjoyable character.

Its not the over-descriptive stuff that gets to me - its the 'going off on long tangents' - some of the branches of his main story - I'm thinking Brienne, the chap in the last book whose name escapes me who is involved in attacking some kingdom somewhere, and some of the other peripheral characters - it makes it hard to keep track of all the strands

That narrows it down...

I thought that the over-descriptive way of characters is one of the strongest assets of Martin's novels. It's like you can see and you know those characters.

Always loved Russian writers for that. And Martin does a good job in that aspect too.

 yep - sorry! Couldn't be arsed to go upstairs and look through the book. Something like John Something.

The ex hand of the king who has adopted Rhaegar's son and now is helping him for the claim of throne?

I have forgotten most of the names so could be wrong.

Jon Connington and Aegon Targaryen are attacking the Seven Kingdoms now. He's Rhaegar's son, rightful Targaryen heir, and he's not Daenerys. What's not to like?

Connington was The Mad King's hand and Rhaegar's best friend.

So I was right. Yipee.

Personally I think that this story is very important. My bet is that Aegon will become the king of the seven kingdoms when it will finish the clash of ice and fire.

Yes, I knew he was important after reading his chapter - it was more a cumulative effect.....yet another character

Know that feeling. You reading along and then your on the other side of the world reading about brand new characters. Half of which you never fully engage with because they have zero link with what you are wanting to read about (progression of the main story line).

The sea folk are the best example of this for me. Couldn't care less about them, but they have plenty of chapters about them.

Season 3 trailer.

Tormund looks well cast, but why is he climbing the wall?

Spent most of that gradually remembering who everyone was. Hope TWOW comes out soon.

Remembering who everyone is or that it comes out soon?

I'm guessing it'll be around mid 2014 or something.

I've given up remembering who half the people in these books are. By the time it actually comes out it will be even worse. I'll be lucky to remember even half the semi important minor characters.

Spoilers incase some didn't want to read this.

A pirate claling himself Lord of the Waters, Aurane Waters surely? Didn't he scarper with his fleet from Kings Landing?

I'd forgotten about that. I will have to do another read when the new book is on the horizon.

I have forgotten who is Aurane Waters, like I have forgotten many other things and it haven't been a year since I read them. Martin better doesn't take another three years to make the new book cause until then people will forget a lot of things.

Aurane Waters originally fought for Stannis but declared for Joffrey after they lost on the Blackwater. Then Cersei pardoned him and made him the leader of all the ships or whatever it's called. When Cersei got imprisoned he fecked off with his brand new fleet.

Going to avoid reading the teaser chapters. Read the Theon one and I was too disappointed with the lack of more so can't be bothered to read others. Waiting until the new book's closer to being out and then read them all again.

I did a very bad thing and read ASoS without having read the first two, but I don't think I was ever confused for long. I'm even more excited for next Sunday now.

One thing that has pissed me off about the plot is this Lord of Light motherfecker. That cnut can do anything. Shadowy snatch monster taking out Renly was bad enough, but then Stannis throws three leeches in a fire and then fate conspires to take out Balon Greyoy, Robb and Joffrey? feck that. None of the other religions seem much cop in comparison.

Anyway looking forward to seeing how some scenes that worked very well in the book translate to the tv show. It's a shame Arya already had the Tickler killed on the show, his death was great in the book.

Weirdly, despite enjoying it a lot I have absolutely no desire to read the next two books especially after hearing some things about them. Too many chapters of people I don't care about whatsoever to churn through. I can imagine it's quite fun to write that way though.

don't want to read back the whole thread so I'll just ask: am I the only one who hates the Bran chapters?

Too much mysticism and acid trip stuff in there; I enjoy the political machinations far more in any of the books. The kid has potential as an interesting character but his search for the chance to become interesting is being dragged out far too long.

It's only implied to Stannis that the leeches worked. Melisandre says it's working but it doesn't mean that's true. It's likely that Balon, Robb and Joffrey would have died anyway. I see it as Melisandre's way of manipulating Stannis, though she probably believes it worked too, the nutter.

I thought Bran would make use of that horse riding contraption Tyrion gave him the blueprints for and become a decent fighter but he's currently on his way to becoming a tree. Will see how that develops but it'll have to be good to save that storyline.

I reckon Bran is going to take over Hodor's mind, and use him to beat the living shit out of people whilst he chills out being a tree.

On a more serious note, I'm still waiting for the Hodor POV chapter, in which every word is "Hodor."

While that's a joke, it's been confirmed there will be no new POVs for the rest of the series. Seems a bit poo.

That is good to hear. The story suffers badly from to many characters that get focused on, so at least we can expect the number not to keep rising in future books.

Also means a lot of the POVs won't die (at least in the immediate future) though which kind of spoils it a bit.

Ignoring the first chapter deaths he doesn't tend to kill that many POV's. Anyway he seems to have a whole lot of POVs that a couple of deaths won't make much difference.

Someone dies in that first chapter? feck, I haven't read it yet and wasn't planning to do it.
