Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

Successor show(s) confirmed: http://grrm.livejournal.com/536859.html

It won't be about Dunk and Egg, neither it would be for Robert's Rebellion. Which is weird, cause those two are the most popular ASOIAF stories/backstories.

I would like it to be about Vallyria, and how Targaryan's went to Westeros.

The reign of Aegon the Unworthy leading into the the first Blackfyre rebellion would be my guess.
I think that is extremely likely. While I would like to see old Valyria, Aegon's Conquest, Dance of Dragons and the Long Night I think that the Blackfyre rebellion makes a lot of sense because:

1) It is quite similar to ASOIAF. Intrigue, schema, betrayal, politics and all that.

2) It doesn't have dragons so it won't cost a bomb.

Aegon's Conquest and the Long Night will be expensive, Dance of Dragons will be super-expensive with all those dragons, and the old Valyria would need blockbuster movies budget.

I dont get why he doesn''t do Dunc and Egg tbh (or however its spelt)
Its a very different tone but its more digestable too,
and they're likable characters

Would it be so terrible to do something totally different?
Rather than beating the same tone, style and themes into the ground till everyone was painfully bored of them

(read his blog and it made sense)

The reason is in the post on his blog.

"We're not doing Dunk & Egg. Eventually, sure, I'd love that, and so would many of you. But I've only written and published three novellas to date, and there are at least seven or eight or ten more I want to write. We all know how slow I am, and how fast a television show can move. I don't want to repeat what happened with GAME OF THRONES itself, where the show gets ahead of the books. When the day comes that I've finished telling all my tales of Dunk & Egg, then we'll do a tv show about them... but that day is still a long ways off." http://grrm.livejournal.com/536859.html

yeah just saw that. I thought he only had one book about them released

The whole world knows how slow he is...
Or it's just ASOIAF? He does a lot of other stuff and idk but to me he doesn't seem to be super slow at those.. so I thougt maybe he just can't bring it all together (in a satisfying way).

He goes through writers blocks like everyone else, but ASOIAF is such a sprawling story with so many characters and pieces that it certainly would be difficult to pull it all together. Personally, based on comments he's made on finishing the last one and working on this one, the fact that it's taking so long seems to me more of a symptom of poor planning than slow writing.

I know this is a silly question now, but is there really no reported progress on the next book?

He'll be dead way before he finishes Dunk & Egg.
Another 10 Dunk and Egg books

So there's 12 years separating the first and the third book coming out, so that's one book every four years. Provided he lives until he's 108 we should be fine. :nervous:

A few years back Martin said that there will be no progress reports. He will let us know once the book is done.

If I remember correctly, this was after he made some progress reports (on a previous book) in which he estimated roughly how long it should take him to finish that book, and then it turned out that he needed much more time to get it done.

To be honest the fact the TV show overtook the books has killed some of the enthusiasm I had for the whole franchise. I didn't think it would happen when I bought Dances with Dragons years ago but now its more a case of looking forward to it instead of cant wait for it and counting down the days to the next series/Winds of Winter.

Anyway I reckon the events/characters/events in the spin-offs (or whatever you want to call it) will be very much fair game to the tv writers-and it wont be in a setting like the books where everything is pretty much pre-determined. So no Aegons Conquest/Blackfyre Rebellion or anything of the sort, more like some random minor houses trials and tribulations with the odd mention of the larger story.

Would love to see the Blackfyre rebellion and Bloodraven actually done properly but the budget would need to be crazy and its maybe more convoluted than the main story.

Why the Blackfyre would need crazy budget? It doesn't have dragons, zombies, much magic and other CGI stuff.

It has battles though, but we don't know at what scale they are. It is very close in style to the war of five kings.

A Dance of Dragons in the other hand...the budget there will be crazy.

How come there can still be TV spoilers in this thread since TV has overtaken the books?
From my understanding, there are parts of the TV series that the producers have left out that are from the books on purpose. There could be a few things from the books that HBO might decide to show later on in the show.

Theres been nothing new to discuss about the books for 5+ years.
If you dont want to hear anything new then dont go into a GoT thread.
This thread has always had a more relaxed approach to speculation.
There shouldn't be tv spoilers for unaired stuff outside of [.spoiler] tags

This isn't a GoT thread. That's TV. This is ASOIAF thread.

I don't mind speculation about stuff that's already been printed or I wouldn't be here. I do mind TV spoilers which could spoil something that's yet to be printed because we all know that the TV writers have unpublished material in their possession. If you want to discuss that, go there.

I think TV is already spoiling stuff that's not yet printed. We should just be just relaxed about this spoiler nonsense and not let this hysteria develop like the TV thread.

We've already had a seasons worth of spoilers, have you actually managed to avoid that so far?
I'm not that pushed personally but i just dont see how i could avoid the tv spoilers and just ... basically accepted it was going to be spoiled.

I maintain that theres feck all to talk about from a book perspective and wont be for a while though

Think most of us are banned from posting there.

Think I survived the ban hammer even though I did post a book spoiler in that thread last year.
I can read it but can't post. I've never spoiled anything, at least I don't think so, but people were aware that I was a reader and it made them anxious, I guess. Paranoid bunch.

I got banned for discussing someone else's spoiler. Haven't even read the books but the conversation was literally 'do you think X will happen' and I said 'no'. Ban.

This thread has a more relaxed tune on spoilers and here we can discuss everything about books and Tv show. In fact, almost all of us are banned from the TV thread so here is the only thread we can discuss about the show.

And well, only the TV show has new stuff, there is basically nothing that you can discuss about the books at this stage. So feck the spoiler staff, post whatever you want bar 'the next episode ' trailers.

This is going to go the Robert Jordan way and he'll die before he can finish it. Atleast Jordan's successor was pretty rapid at writing.

I haven't seen a single spoiler from the TV show.
