Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

Should I start with the books or the TV show?
I watched the first 5 seasons before reading the books and I'd say watch the show first. You won't be affected by the jaded cynicism that some book readers have just because some storylines are left out and stuff is a bit more streamlined.

Definitely books first. I always find that watching a show/movie first and then reading the books to be a big factor in limiting my imagination.

This is a good point, but think of the books as a big universe with a lot of moving parts, while the show is like our solar system with action around a certain characters. Well you make up your own reference because this is the best I can do.

Ah shite, saw the bump and thought there might by news on a release date for WoW.

I'm hilt deep into the second book. fecking awesome so far.

The show is awesome (although it does get into a position where it seem to have a mind of its own and may end up contradicting the books). However the books explains things better. The show does its very best to show you what had happened but the books also explain why such things happened. Its basically between watching football as a supporter and watching football as a coach. They both see the same things on the pitch but the latter know why player A is not being played while the former just fumbles into darkness and tries to make educated guesses.

Also because of budget constraints some characters has not been added which may sound having a minor role in the beginning but do have a bigger role at a later stage. The show learnt that in the hard way and I feel that they are now fudging some of the story. Which is a shame really

The books are great!

Not how I imagine Marwyn to look like though...
Aye, nor me. Maybe they'll just have him as the unnamed 'Archmaester of the Citadel'.

Who else could he be though? I've seen shouts for Lord Hightower, which could maybe work seeing as they're the last 'big' house still standing which is yet to be introduced, but will they play a 'significant role'? I don't think so.

Others have said The Mad King in flashback scenes?

Yeah I see him playing some Maester with whom Sam interacts with.

Apparently, episode by episode plot leaked. Any spoiler hating person reading that stuff?
I only found many leaked photos which someone linked together into one big speculative story. Read it all. I can't find anything else. I'm not good with reddit.

Well Jon & Dany hooking up has kinda been foreshadowed even in the books, but I still really, really hate it. Feels like something that a fanfiction writer would concoct.

The male protagonist gets with the female protagonist, yawn.

And please none of that ASOIAF has no "good guy" & "bad guy" thing. Jon is clearly the good guy, though Dany may be more murky.

This is exactly what I read, actually. It starts with a "It's all speculative" disclaimer, but maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

Anyway, it seems quite eventful and entertaining. I don't believe Martin would go for some of these things but it seems fitting for the show, in general.

I haven't opened those spoiler tags but knowing what some posters are like, is posting the spoilers really a good idea on here?

I read the first 3 books in 2000, the 4th in 2006 and the 5th in 2011. Still yet to watch the TV series, do people here recommend it, those that have read the books first?

Without a doubt, it's good tv and I think season 1 is probably the best so good way to start

Whoever made those spoilers doesn't seem to realize that Rhaegar already had a son named Aegon. Why would he give his second son the exact same name? The origin of those spoilers makes it clear to point out that its all speculative so some of it may not be truw.

For all intents and purposes, Arthur Dayne and the others seem to know what happened to Rhaegar and his family. It's not inconceivable that he's named as Aegon again, considering enough indications are given in the books about Rhaegar searching for the prophecy of AA and him not being satisfied with offsprings from Elia of Dorne

Can't we keep this thread for book talk only? I don't see what leaked plots of episodes have to do with that.

It's kind of obvious though, isn't it?
At some point - I'd rather not have everything confirmed before I watch/ read it though.

You could make similar arguments about Rob being killed (no POV), or Tyrion meeting Dany. It would still be fecking annoying to know.

It has everything to do with the upcoming books, surely?
I still hope that the books will handle certain things entirely different and am almost certain they will. The show might end in the same way but the roads towards the ending might be very different. If they are or aren't, I still don't really want to know tbh.

I'll only say that we shouldn't get too much tied up with spoiler nonsense like in the other thread. Jon + Dany is a speculation and not a spoiler.
Yeah of course it is, but it stops being just speculation when people sort of confirm it because of leaked episode's plots.

Anyways no harm, I can easily stay clear of this thread until there's more news on the upcoming book.

Just finished the 5th book.

When does the next one come out? Why is the TV series ahead of the written canon?

And the fat bastard didn't even have the courtesy to give us fans a Christmas/New Year present . Even a Dunk & Egg chapter would do :(
